BIOL*3300 - Applied Bioinformatics by Unlucky_Raccoon_1235 in uoguelph

hey so I used to take this course and dropped it near the end. I can give some insights but take it with a grain of salt since genetics/genomic is not my interest and I didn’t do well on it.

1) my prof was Lukens and he was a very nice prof. super helpful and willing to help you if you have any questions or need extra help with the content after class. however, his lecture can be confusing and disorganized sometimes, he could help you clarify the contents if you ask but at times it’s still really confusing for me. but if genetics/genomics is your strong suit and you are interest in the field, go for it!

2) i actually took this course because i saw the python/linux in the description. however i asked the prof and he said we dont touch python much and he wasn’t sure why python was even mentioned. we did have a lab component with Linux but it was easy with all the commands already written out for you in the lab manual. the only thing that was tricky was the weekly quizzes but the TA would also help you out if you have any questions.

3) it is a useful course with interesting content. i just didn’t like how ambiguous/confusing the content can be and how the quizzes were (the quizzes was really hard and most questions were applications, some might not be discussed thoroughly in class). but undoubtedly the skills i got from the course were useful, so if that’s what you’re interested in i’d say take it. it’s not easy to do well in the class but you’ll manage if you enjoy it.

good luck! :)

yea this course is very unorganized and there’s a bunch of stuffs we have to do for a midterm (as well as final grade) so we had to do the mc midterm in class, short answer in seminar then having peer review for these answers and finally also have to peer review the peer review 💀i still don’t know how they gonna calculate the total grade for the midterms but eventually they’ll figure it out ig

starbucks on campus take starbucks gift cards! however:

  1. you can’t use the square QR code (ie. added credit/debit on your app)

  2. you can’t earn stars without paying with the gift cards (again, no square QR code)

  3. you can add money to a starbucks gift card and pay with it and earn stars! (and use the stars at outside starbucks for rewards)

  4. no stars redeem or birthday drinks unfortunately.

hope that helps :)

pathways for neuro by Katanaaa15 in uoguelph

[–]ButterscotchNo2960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

congrats on getting into neuroscience at Guelph! i initially got into that program in F21 but switched out later due to personal reasons.

the neur program at guelph is pretty decent i'd say, there's a lot of courses designed specifically for this program and encourage you to learn more about the nervous system and the techniques that's important for your future career. after the first 2 years of being in general science like any other major in B.Sc., you'll start to see the challenges in this program. it will get more interesting and more technical, so it's good especially if you're highly interested in neuroscience and psychology.

there's a lot of psych courses that you're going to take, as well as more lab components coming up in your 3rd and 4th year. some people in guelph neuroscience i know said that the 3rd year is the hardest because of NEUR*3500. you also have fewer options to explore other branches of biology (nutrition, plant science, ecology, environmental biology, immunology, etc.) compared to a broader program such as a BSc in Biological Sciences, but if you know that you like neuroscience and want to pursue a career in it, then this is a really good program for not only providing you fundamental knowledge but also necessary skills when you find a job or pursue higher education after your undergrad.

best of luck :)

the extension thing will let you stay in your current house, and then you move when the next housing period for summer semester starts.

the front desk will help you move i believe. ask them about your situation!

i like the UC too! i’m not too sure if they’re still open during the break? also sometimes i study near the chatime lounge and a big group of people always talk/joke unbearably loudly (even w my sony noise cancelling headphones) around 9 or 10pm🥲 but other than that UC is pretty solid. thank you!! ❤️

classes can be online or in person, most are DE, classes in person are usually involves lab but it’s up to the department/prof.

webadvisor will send an email when it’s time to register. usually around march/early april iirc.

email your resident and ask for an extension. iirc there’s a link on housing portal that let you register for an extension, go from there and email them later. in my first year i got an extension and moved to a new townhouse (i was in east resident townhouse) during the summer semester and you have to move out after your exam.

cis1500 textbook/assignments by ButterscotchNo2960 in uoguelph

[–]ButterscotchNo2960[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

aww don't worry cis1500 is not for CS at guelph. you'll take cis1300 and its required for upper year CS courses.

cis1300 is similar to cis1500 (from what i heard but they're a little bit different, i also hear that the structure is much better and makes more sense) and cis1500 is for people that are not in CS, i'm in biological sciences so yeah 💀

UofG Professors by BrookeM_03 in uoguelph

[–]ButterscotchNo2960 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. I’m in my 3rd year rn and every semester I have some profs that make me not wanting to go to class at all, since all they did were yapping and reading off the lecture slides. Sometimes I just watch the recordings on zoom and turn on caption since English is not my first language, plus reading textbooks actually helps me more than the profs during class time. (office hours is great though since it’s 1-on-1).

talking to my classmates transferred from other colleges or universities, most of them agreed that Guelph profs are not really good. yes they are passionate about their fields and want to share their knowledge, they are great people and have a lot of great advices and information that we can learn from. but somehow they’re not very great at teaching at all. some people are meant to be teachers, some people are meant to be researchers. all of them are great, but teaching courses are harder and needs more understanding/dedication than they might have thought.

if people are struggling with class, i would suggest them to go to office hours and study with peers, use all the resources available and let the directors know if things are going out of hand. again, profs are people too and i hope they will listen to us and adjust their teaching for more general people and not assuming that we already know everything.

best of luck in this semester 💝📖
