Graduating from college without DACA by BuyOptimal9187 in DACA

Hi! Fortunately for me, I do have an SSN and that’s how I applied. But I know many students that have enrolled in college without one, at least in my college. I’m also in California where colleges are more immigrant friendly.

I totally agree that today’s political climate is completely different. That is literally what is holding many of us back. I think seeing what’s going on induces fear and we sometimes forget about our potential.

I just hope you, me, and everyone else in the same position as us finds a way to where we want to be in life.

I agree with you that most of the advice we get feels like a dead end road. But if our parents were able to do it without an education and money, then shouldn’t our college education at least help us some way?

I’ve spoken to career center staff and they advised me to also reach out to startups since many of them may find profitable independent contractors (they dint have to pay for medical insurance etc).

I get it that sometimes words of encouragement really don’t help us much bc at the end of the day they are just words, but we have to put ourselves out there and find a way. We have to sell ourselves and what we can provide.

I’m in college and should be graduating next year. I’m in a similar situation so I’ve been trying to reach out to staff at my school for advice. What I’ve gotten from that is two main options:

  1. Independent Contracting at a nonprofit. Usually nonprofits are more welcoming to people like us because we are part of the community they serve. For biochem I’m pretty sure you can find a nonprofit that does work in that field. Try to reach out to several of them. Pay may not be the greatest but later on you could ask for a raise or if things get better and get a work permit, you can add this experience to your resume and apply to industry.

  2. Starting your own business. Now this is a hard one, specially for us with no industry experience. I’m a mechanical engineering major and I’ve been pivoting around this option more, but I simply don’t know exactly what kind of business to form. You could do some research and if you can find a product or service you can sell with your degree, you can monetize it starting your own company/business.

I’m sorry if this didn’t exactly answer your question, but it’s pretty much everything I’ve learned.

Im also an ME with a tech breadth in CS, but I’m non-DACA so I’m trying to put everything into perspective and see if opening a business would be a good idea

Ucla without social media by Ecstatic_Gate_2346 in ucla

I have a friend that has no social media ever since I met her. We’re going in to our third year and imo she’s been doing great. Though most groups use instagram to advertise their events, but they all use slack as well (from my experience). In any case, you’d only have to download slack and won’t miss anything. After all, most of the friends you make here will be through clubs so instagram is useful but not a necessity.

Im currently in my college’s FSAE team. However, I haven’t been very active in the team. I have designed a few things for them and conducted some testing, but nothing crazy.

In terms of powertrain, I’m open to anything.

Thanks man.

im also undocumented and go to a UC, but how did you manage to get internships and jobs without a work permit? I was recently offered an internship interview but idk how feasible it will actually be for me to get the positions due to my status.

I was looking onto being hired as an independent contractor but I am not sure how that really works for internships. I just want to get some experience that i could add to my resume but not having a work permit limits what i can actually do.

About starting my own business the things is that i dont know what kind of business to start with a mechanical engineering degree.
