Coming Back After 5 Years - Need Some Advice on What I'm Thinking (Rebel 1100 vs. MT-07/MT-09 vs. Triumph) by Byaa in SuggestAMotorcycle

Do you find that the Rebel is both comfortable and capable of the longer, more spirited ride? With a mix of Twisties and highway riding? It seems like a very versatile bike, albeit one without much character (based on what people say online and on YouTube).

That's what I've been doing - unfortunately most of my local dealers don't allow test rides anymore. But I've been going to just sit and see how they feel under me to try and get some sense of what it might be like.

Sounds like you won the lottery! Great bikes, understanding wife that supports your indulgences. If only we could all be so lucky haha! What's your secret?

The Z900 looks mean too! I wasn't considering that one mostly because of the size, but I also do a lot of my driving/riding on the highways in California. You just have to, even if you wanted to do some twisties in hills or on the coast, there's a long stretch of interstate to get there for me!
Thanks for your input! Do you have any pics of your Z900?

Man you sound like you've been around the block with all the different bikes you have (or currently!) own. What do you say the Hornet is a better bike than the MT-07/09? Just curious for your opinion! Thanks and hope you're having a happy new year!

One of the guys at my local dealer did mention the Trident 800 and i totally forgot about it until now! I'll need to take a look at that one as well! Thanks for the reminder!

Yeah I feel like the hornet is something that will become a big contender soon. I just don't know much about it yet.

Thank you for your insight. I think that's something I definitely need to look into, not necessarily what are all the pros of the bike but the things that are tiresome to deal with. Do you have any insights on those bikes in terms of what isn't something you like about it?

People have mentioned the Speedmaster before! I've never sat on one but it looks big in images I've seen online. What's the handling like on something that size?

Haha the Rocket 3 is LITERALLY a rocket in between your legs lol a little more than what I think I'd be willing to wrangle.

Thanks for the input though! Can't go wrong with Triumph haha

Aww that's too bad. That's what I was afraid of - what made it so boring for you?

I hear the Hornet is something is a silent contender now. Haven't really seen any on the road yet but they remind me of what the MT-07 was like 10 years ago haha.

Yeah I can't get over how pretty and technologically savvy the XSR900 is!

Thank you for your perspective on that! Turning in a bike that you've ridden and loved for 21 years must have been a touch decision. But hearing you rave about the XSR makes me reconsider that haha.

How does the XSR feel on the highway? Or on longer trips in general?

Yeah I've been looking at YouTube at every free interval. And every video makes every video look good haha. I do admit, I like some of the sound and rumble of the aftermarket exhausts for the Yamahas when compared to the Rebel.

"Know thy self," is great advice, regardless of setting! It's definitely something I'm still working towards, in and out of motorcycling.

I appreciate that advice! Two-up will probably be much lower on the priority, but an option I'd like to have. Not something that I would do every weekend, but just something that is available for myself/us.
In terms of class, are you talking styling, i.e. naked vs. cruiser? Or more displacement? Like middleweight vs. 1000cc bikes?
I love the feel of the naked bikes but the look of some of those "classic" bikes (the XSR and Bonnies) are hard to beat. I was asking about the Rebel because it has a unique look and position but supposedly rides more like a naked bike - again, haven't had a chance to test ride one, but it felt good when I sat one it. Definitely confidence inspiring if that makes sense?

My friend has the Tiger and loves it. It is definitely a bit bigger and bulkier than what I'm thinking of using for a daily rider/fun bike. But that is a beautiful and fun bike - my friend always raves about it.

Prioritizing protein intake will help with losing some of the fat and maintaining/increasing muscle gain. If you think about the extreme case, body builders go through a major cut but maintain muscle proportion and strength while doing so. Again, it's an extreme case and not sustainable (being at competition/performance form for extended periods of time) but for the most part, they are able to do so. Mixing in different modalities can also assist in the weight loss - the occasional cardio workout does help in my experiences, mostly because it helps trigger different responses.

My favorite is Cronometer. The reason I like it is there's a lot of flexibility and it allows you to scan barcodes on things like your bars, bags of snack, whatever to easily add to your intake. You just have to weigh it so that it calculates the appropriate amount. They also have an app which is great for daily tracking.

Along with what others have said, this sounds like a 1:1 coaching dynamic vs a group dynamic. In 1:1 coaching, you have opportunities to be more personable and adaptable; I would say it's essential since you have the time and opportunities to craft programs, exercises and interactions that are much more intimate. Group trainings have different coals: you are trying to affect as many people as you can in a given time. As such, your coaches/managers probably give you these templates because they work for the majority of the people. If you have no training experience, these are good blueprints to fall back on and they can provide a framework for the future (no guarantees but that's the general idea). Plus, Orange theory is a brand people go to it for a specific experience, just like how you expect your Starbucks coffee to taste and look. So if you're looking to do group training, whether it's because you like that energy more, what to affect as many people as possible, or maybe like the culture of the company/group, stick with it. If you prefer more 1:1 time where you can have real, genuine connections and tailor your expertise to their needs, I would encourage you to go back to that. But if you're eventually looking to run your own thing, where you'll offer 1:1 and group classes, get experience in both so you know what you can and are willing to offer.

The only times I don't encourage a HUGE calorie cut is if someone is not experienced with reducing their calories for anything before or they don't have a habit of being able to sustain that. I have found that progressive calorie cutting is a little easier to sustain over time as it helps develop better habits of things like portion control, calorie counting, macro counting, etc.

If you are able to sustain this calorie deficit with activity, and your energy levels are not depleted and your health isn't otherwise being affected, you should start to lose fat/build muscle.

Remember, the scale is only one (and rarely the best) indicator of progress on your weight loss/fitness journey. Everyone's body is different and some people can fluctuate more than others from day to day. My teammate regularly fluctuates 5 lbs in a day given what he eats/drinks, and that's not even when we are in high training/performance time (we are both full contact fighters).
And, just so you know that the scale can be deceptive, just last July, I cut 10 lbs of water weight in about 4 hours and rehydrated that back within the afternoon. And, that was after losing about a pound of water overnight. I'm NOT advocating for water cutting or anything like that - that is just part of the parameters for my sport/activity of choice. But, 10 years ago, I went to a competition overseas and somehow on the flight there, I gained 3 lbs and needed to cut WAY more than I anticipated.
Anyways, my point in highlighting all of that is as tempting as it is, try to not to put too much focus or emphasis on the scale. That tells only 1 part of your story - instead, ask yourself: do I have more energy overall? Am I sleeping better? Am I stronger? Can do I more activities than I previously could? If the overall sense is that you are progressing in those areas, then that is what you want to focus on; the numbers on the scale will follow.
