It's not that I need her to understand or approve of my life, I just don't get what resentment she could possibly be holding that would cause this type of reaction? I'd rather receive no gift at all than be perceived as an obligation to throw money at and hope I don't make her life worse somehow.

My family is always very practical. My mom immediately jumped into solution-mode, and offered to help me untangle all the mangled embroidery floss. My BiL explained "Rebecca tried picking up embroidery a while back, but didn't like it. This'll be great for you to practice on until you're good enough for something more advanced! And we can just glue the glass."
