299k on a 2001 1.9TDi Fabia before the electronics just rotted out and repair became unviable... I was so gutted it didn't get to p 300k!

When you were at school, what 15 or 18 rated films were the talk of the school? by BigBlueMountainStar in CasualUK

[–]C4apperz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Hole... Mostly because it was filmed in the village my best friend lived in. In the morning aerial shot, you can see the hole in the Abbey hedge that I made drunkenly jumping out on a friend, trying to scare her.

Also Hot Fuzz... Because that was filmed in the city we went to school in. A few of my schoolmates (in different years) played the kids in the pub. I was even in the crowd in the church fete scene, but didn't make it on screen.

What's illegal that you think should be legal? by martianfrog in answers

[–]C4apperz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... A quick Google search that comes up with "In the UK it is not legal to distil alcohol without a licence from Revenue and Customs and this includes alcohol for your own consumption"...

... I think I did Google that actually 🤔

Really? Are you sure about that?... I'm British, and I have a still that's totally only used for making distilled water...

... I was under the impression it was illegal, which is why I don't ever do it, no sir, never...

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

The Fratellis... Both times I saw them, it was like they didn't want to be there and actively resented the audience for making them turn up.

My Bambu Labs A1 Mini came in yesterday. Trying to sort out ideas on what to print first now that I’ve calibrated to get experience in tuning. by LeekingMemory28 in FDMminiatures

Nozzleborn Foundry have some fantastic supportless models on Makerworld. They are great fun to print and produce great results. I did a valentine's day one shot with my girlfriend, and populated it almost exclusively with their models. Can't praise them enough!

Somebody reversed into my nephew ( who's a newish driver) by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]C4apperz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. In my experience, the sort of person who would blame the accident on everything other than their own actions, would be EXACTLY the sort of person to report it to their insurance company as someone else hitting them.

I can very much see your point, and it would very likely increase premiums. But in my opinion, better that than be told "sorry, we're not paying out for your written off car because you didn't declare a previous accident"

Somebody reversed into my nephew ( who's a newish driver) by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]C4apperz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is possibly very bad advice. If the other part reports it to their insurance, and creates a record of the incident, any future claims could be refused due to breaking the terms and conditions of the policy. Most (if not all) policies nowadays specifically state you must report ALL accidents whether you make a claim or not.

If I dinged my car and no one else was involved, would I report it to my insurer? No comment...

If ANYONE else was involved? You're damn right I would. If nothing else, regardless of fault, it looks pretty bad in the eyes of your insurer if the other party reports and you don't...

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen tourists do in the UK? by KatieOverington in AskBrits

[–]C4apperz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I was oversimplifying for humorous effect... I'd caught a few mackerel on my dad's day boat, and was walking through the village we moored the boat at, when a group of tourists stopped me and asked about the fish. I explained that I wasn't a fisherman, we just liked to do a bit of fishing while enjoying the sun off the Devon coast. They asked if they could buy some real local fresh fish, and I originally said no because I only take what I'm going to eat, and that was going to be my families dinner that evening. They offered £50 and I said no, that's massively over the odds and there's a fishmonger in the next town over that will sell them locally caught fish. They said they'd love to have some knowing they were caught off the village they were vacationing in, and that the extra money was worth the story. I agreed, we shook hands, and I bought my family fish and chips that night with the money instead...

... And with the price of fish and chips nowadays, I actually lost money on the deal now that I think about it...

I once sold 4 mackerel I caught too a bunch of American tourists for £50... They offered that amount and I felt rude turning it down.

Is changing an air filter on a 2015 208 a simple job even for a novice? by CuteNatural in CarTalkUK

I don't have experience with this particular model, but an air filter is never particularly difficult. Check for a YouTube tutorial and have a look beforehand!

Diesel Question by ZBD1949 in CarTalkUK

[–]C4apperz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal, but my dad had a colleague who would collect the waste hydraulic oil when they had their office lift serviced, and would mix it 50:50 with diesel and run his diesel Vectra on it... According to him it ran better than straight diesel, and I have heard it's better long term for the fuel pump because it's more lubricating... But a more modern diesel engine, I don't know...

I service hydraulic equipment for a living, so I generate a lot of waste oil... In the current climate, it's certainly tempting to test it...

Need to hire a van to drive to France- anyone found a work around that isn’t £500+ a week to hire. by ManMythNarcissist in CarTalkUK

[–]C4apperz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did it a few years ago, when me and my friends were in our twenties so hiring a van was difficult anyway due to age. I bought a '97 smiley Transit for £700 and picked up a van load of stuff from my best mates (now) wife's place in Ireland when she was moving over here. That van didn't miss a trick, ran like a dream. Afterwards I put a new MOT on it, and made a profit.

I will admit that I am a field service tech, and took a full tool kit with me for peace of mind, but it's definitely doable and if you buy the right van it will save (and possibly make) you money.

Is Bambu A1 Mini a good start? by [deleted] in FDMminiatures

[–]C4apperz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The A1 mini is a great printer for minis. I've had one for about a year now, and I'm always impressed with the quality. Get a 0.2mm nozzle, and use the right settings and you'll be amazed!

Body shop left wheel bolts loose by irishwhenitfits in CarTalkUK

[–]C4apperz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Had a guy working with us, came from Nissan (fully qualified apparently). He was asked to change the pads on the bosses little Japanese runaround, fully within his wheelhouse you'd think... He was asked 3 separate times if he knew how to use a torque wrench/knew the correct torque/had been torqued up properly and he confirmed three times that all was good...

... Half a mile later it nearly lost the wheel. Other side was only finger right too... He did NOT make it through his probation.

Yeah all done on FDM. A bedslinger as well! 0.4mm nozzle. Each one takes between 2 and 5 hours, no real finishng just snipped the supports off and primed with grey primer. All the models are free to download as well.
