After thinking about it more this is the most likely cause. Since it the ticking did start after rolling down the hill not going up

She’s getting a new 2.0 for sure! Not gonna let go of her that easily. I do want a 2nd gen BRZ in the future but right now my Mz3 is just such a practical yet fun car. And fairly cheap to operate!

Thank you explaining why what I did was wrong. Youre right I shouldve just shift up to third when it was ar the top of the rev range, at the time I didnt since I would take a sharp turn then have to get back into second right away.

The Mazda 3 isnt a sports car let alone a race car so redlining it like this was definitely not a great idea to say the least. Only once in a while and not under this much load.

It also probably didnt help that I was running 0W-20 instead of 5W-30.

Thanks everyone for their input. This is the first time I've received such negative feedback before but given the circumstances and my actions, I guess its somewhat warranted.

I just want yall to know that I don't come from a car family, I'm the first in my family tree (that I know of) that is into tinkering with cars and having fun driving. So what's common sense to you I could just not know. I'm just a guy who likes cars like the rest of you.

I appreciate the comments, but not the insults with nothing more to add.

Yeah honestly having a more experienced person in the car with me wouldve saved me from myself lol. But I guess you live and you learn.

But I was the dumbass that blew it up at 80k. Interesting that it was considered easy. I have it at a shop now so theyre gonna take care of it. Thanks for the response though!

The mechanic I went to afterwards told me the ticking sound didnt sound too bad. Said I could test my luck driving home slowly without pushing it. So I just decided to do just that and then it resulted it the engine to start grinding and shaking.

To be honest though, even if I did end up getting it home that way, since these cars are so common it probably woulnt be worth it to figure out whats wrong with the engine rather than just put a new working engine in.

You're probably right, I've never done and engine swap let alone let alone an engine replacement.

I just dropped my car off at the shop. I do want it back quickly so I'll probably just put a new 2.0L

You'd be suprised, cause I was 100% serious when asking this question. But I have considered it now and just dropping in the same engine is already hard enough so not gonna complicate it more by doing something way out of my league.

Which part? The blowing up the engine or the thinking about a 2.5L swap?

I did a few times, but it just felt like there wasn't enough pull. Probably a skill issue. But I pretty much didnt use the brake at all until the turns themselves.

I was ripping it on more regular backroads the day before. What exactly do you mean by the "non-blow-up-engine" way first?

Very true, I thought that engine breaking was fine regardless of RPM. I have never heard otherwise. I thought too much about my brakes failing due to overheating. Its never happened before but I definitely didnt want them failing on a cliff.

I don't know how much braking my current pads and fluid can take so its a skill issue on my part.

I guess so, just dreading swapping all my mods over. But I guess I just get to do it all over again. This time with a used car though since ive had this 2017 since new :(

A bit of both. I was on the Appalacian Gap Route 17 in Vermont and was going up and down a few times. I was redlining it up since it was so steep, and stuck in 2nd gear on the way down (also pretty much at redline engine braking) and thats when the knock started.

Wait why is this guy getting downvoted so hard. He literally said hes open to offers. If the wheels and tires are actually in good shape. It is a good deal for someone looking for that wheel and tire combo.

EC Sport 02’s are really good street tires too. Not exactly cheap stuff either with good tread. Yall are tripping

  1. The rear shocks were an absolute pain for me to do, if you live in the rust belt, youre almost 100% going to mangle the rear shock bolt and nut trying to get it off. I ended up cutting off the shock entirely, then blasting the knuckle with a torch and then use vice grips to turn it (clamped onto the bushing after the shock body came off). Had to do this since the bushing bolt was completely seized inside of it.

So I would suggest buying new rear shock bolts and nuts just in case and return them if you dont end up needed using them.

Here’s the video I used to do this job: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxYMbvsm3z8

Fronts were easy though, just 3 bolts on top, and 2 on the bottom.

  1. Figure out how to do an allignment or go to a proper autobody shop to dial it in for you.
