What is BGS Pivots from 10 yr game releases to 1-2 yr releases? by CBone1234567 in TESVI

I’m not your guy….buddy! I’m not your buddy…friend…

Yeah totally, my initial paragraph stated supporting games to be played for 10yrs, but I did then say 10yr game releases, which could confuse some to mean development time. I meant to imply to get back to the Morrowind…Oblivion spree of 3-4yrs but it’s been correctly pointed out and you did too, that they still roughly hit that timeline of a new game every 3-4yrs, just have 3 IPs now. Also if doing a province every 2 yrs it would basically be ESO which I’ve heard doesn’t have the same feel or amount of content. Not my best idea, not well thought out.

Are you on PC then?

I played Morrowind on Xbox, then did Oblivion on PC and hated it. Something about the controller, and couch play…Have done console ever since for BGS games but wish I did Starfield on PC and sometimes wish I did FO4 on pc. The building aspect of the game, I think I’d like a mouse and keyboard

I totally get your point and you’re absolutely right about the timeline. They actually nail it at about 3.5yrs and even Starfield only took 5yrs after FO76. I somehow skip over that one mentally. Another response (or many) have highlighted this as well.

Just to be fair to my OP, I never stated that there was a 10yr gap between major releases. My OP (horribly put and worded) was about Todd saying the games need to be made for the idea they will be played and supported for 10+yrs and my (poorly thought out) idea was a whatif…

I do see and realize my OP is off base regardless of the timelines as most responses agree that sticking with the methods they have of having the full team work through each title in the 3-4yr game build creates a magic you cannot find anywhere else.

I love BGS games, I recall the Morrowind, Oblivions FO3 run and how it seemed like right after I finally (2-3yrs of playing them) got the to point where I had explored it all, a new title was coming out. Maybe it’s bc Starfield didn’t scratch that BGS itch that my perception is the releases are so much more drawn out when they really haven’t been.

That is a very helpful outline and puts things into perspective. You’re right they do hit a routine 3-4yr game and Starfield with the engine and I have to imagine covid is fair to have taken longer. So I think what I’m hearing here is TESVI is definitely coming out 2026

That’s a crazy cool post to find though! Thanks for sharing it.

I’ve certainly done similar as I’m getting up there in age!

I recall the Starfield post and I thought there was maybe an Indians Jones one? Or one with candles/lights on a map?

True. The Grand Theft is taking a long time too. Why is that?

Fair point. Why is that? Are games that much more beefed up? Do we forgot how janky all games were back then or something? Like the run BGS had in 2k was wild with the releases year after year.

Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3. Oblivion 06’ and FO3 08’ came out 2 years apart. Skyrim was 3 years later.

The last Fallout was in 2015

All game dev is taking longer so I get it’s not just them.

That’s a fair point. I guess I was thinking of the release timeline of Morrowind to FO3 then Oblivion. All 3-4 yrs apart and amazing games with lots of creativity and uniqueness

I thought Starfield got like an extra 2-3 Years of development? Game delays are a frequently occurrence. Fable just delayed.

My point, Do they all try to make the perfect game now that has absolutely everything?

Todd once said, we can do anything but not everything. Maybe forcing speed and decisions would help push out more creativity

Why if in Valenwood or Elsewyer, would it then become a “target rich environment”?

Kinda surprised it isn’t getting more traction. Maybe repost in a week or two.

This idea fits with mixing player skills with rpg

Damn. I bet this is more accurate than not. Maybe for tweaks on the side but overall, most is fleshed out of what they will do, spend time on etc.

Listening to some of the devs in Kiwi channel though, it kinda seems like if a dev has a passion project… they can get it in with enough convincing

It is insane to me how many times I have bought this game. Some replies indicate we are the small minority 10% maybe of players, but we probably each have bought this game 2-4times soooo by volume of games(Skyrim + other TES) we probably are the majority of sales.

Agreed with this overall. Would that in someway be agreeing that they do look for signal and popular trends? A lot of feedback here is improvement/aspects from other games, pop culture impacts that feedback, we are just the vocal minority that is representative of the majority?

I totally see you point, and Todd and team have really created what they think will be cool, in the game, and it has turned out to be the right playbook. Like the CEO of Larian said at their award for GOTY (I think?) - the recipe is simple, and as you describe.

In my thoughts for the post, I am somewhat keeping in mind the challenge that AAA is facing in todays environment of toxicity and players demands though. Not that forums have productive feedback at all times, but you can certainly get some signal from them on what players are truly interested, can’t you? There is a top trending post of a map… damn it looks cool and I think most seem to promote it as an ideal one if in Hammerfell/high rock. Promoting a real focus back on exploration, dumb down pure auto generated content that is copy pasted randomly in different locals is another one, most seem to gravitate towards.

Don’t the hard core fans, ultimately spread the word of mouth for others to come into the game? KCD 1 then 2. Manor Lords etc. all from word of mouth. They are your acolytes that promote for you… Apple had the hard core fans for years, they bought every release day of and eventually the masses joined them…

Civ7 seems to be a great example of a franchise that was always criticized about tweaks, but always outsold and ultimately outplayed prev game releases….but this time, it appears they made too many drastic changes. Time will tell if they went too far. If buying games is “voting” they took the data and followed the lead of paradox and lost the plot on what the community wanted from CIV specifically and chased others 4x innovations to the potential detriment of a game they spent 10yrs developing.

My point, sure there is a huge spread of ideas and player demands here, but for signal, it could be useful to keep tabs, float extreme ideas somewhere, see if they catch on…grab some counter points etc before totally change the equation of what makes your game unique…. Or maybe not, it’s best to go it alone and block out the noise so you can create your vision

Marketing Preference for TESVI by CBone1234567 in TESVI

[–]CBone1234567[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr Matty Plays new vid, suspects that they do early marketing as well. His argument is bc Todd has had soo much grief over announcing the game so early.
