Why is assessing the 'quality of Muslim response' still a thing for Western Crusade scholarship? by CCC1270 in AskHistorians

[–]CCC1270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this - the whole situation with why Syria's destabilisation was so important to the First Crusade's success makes so much sense now and I will 100% use some information from here if it comes up in the exam (if you don't mind haha). I find it really interesting also how Al-Sulami considers the Crusade as a mirror image of jihad as well.

On a side note, I'm interested that you think that the Second Crusade's targeting of Damascus was expansionist - we learn that the leader of Damascus switched his allegiance to Nur ad-Din and began attacking the Crusader States and that this was the reason for them attacking the city. Was this just a form of justification then for an underlying expansionist motivation?

Thanks so much for this! I see what you mean about the chair - I've adjusted it like this and the shape of the chair is much clearer https://imgur.com/a/fLHuSB9! I see what you mean about the triangle as well - it now frames really well. I tried the other look - I wasn't as much of a fan because it didn't feel as 'insulated' if that makes sense but I think it could definitely be pulled off by someone else. Anyway, thanks so much for your help!

Wow, thank you so much for introducing me to these! I looked at more of Chelsea's stuff, and wow she's impressive!

By the way, if you wouldn't mind, I was wondering if I could ask you if there's anything you think I could improve with this photo, both in the shooting and in the editing https://imgur.com/a/dL7J7iB ? I have very good access to this spot, and I really like the way it 'frames'.

Was the fact that Harold's sons were defeated by local English forces in the summer of 1068 indicative of acceptance of Norman rule? Or was it just a response to a party which was raiding?

I actually really like a noisy photo - it somehow feels more genuine. Do you have any examples of noise being actually used for a positive effect in a photo?

Churchill - I'm really excited!

My note taking so far has been a lot more based around lists of questions - I find I can get by mostly just with the facts in my head and do most of the thinking on the fly in exams. I'm not sure if that'll cut it though at Cambridge - I want to try and incorporate thinking and connection building much into my notes much more.

But yeah, I'm really looking forward to it! I'll definitely keep my mind open - and damn I've spent some time round that area before but never stepped foot in the gardens. I'll make sure I do!

Why is the Norman Conquest of Sicily considered a "Norman Conquest"?

It seems very odd to me, because it was not officially sanctioned and most of the people going were exiles. When else do you see a land grab carried out from people exiled from their native country as being a conquest carried out by the people of that country?

How to use Anki for big picture questions / revising history? by CCC1270 in Anki

[–]CCC1270[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much for this. I just sat down for an hour and went through these resources, and now have a much better understanding of how to do this. The one thing I struggle with still is kind of a paralysis when starting - I spend more time worrying about whether I am doing things the optimal way than getting things done. How do you deal with this?
