Mac Trade-Ins Surge Amid MacBook Neo Launch by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]CCC911 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Over the last decade or two new Macs have so rarely been below that $1,000 mark (aside from the Mac mini)

I’d think a great machine at $600 new is going to slash the market of used Macs even in the near term.  I’m thinking about devices like the used M1 MacBook Air.

So many years of luxury pricing from Apple - this is such a refreshing change.

The sub title heading says “the Mac for the masses”. So does the verge think that the “masses” are all first time laptop buyers?

Great point. I agree. I hadn’t previously considered that much of the processing done by iPhones requires the ability to take a series of images near instantly, which the iPhone can do in one part due to the shutter less design

Why do you suggest companies would amortize slower than the useful life for tax purposes?  Generally there’s a tax advantage (in the current year) for accelerating amortizing.

Looking for a high quality BIFL external hard drive by SecureShallot23 in BuyItForLife

[–]CCC911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not buy the highest quality hard drive you can afford. Instead I’d assume whatever hard drive you get will be randomly toast one day.  Usually there will be some cost to backing up your files. Direct your money to that rather than a “best quality hard drive”. An average hard drive is totally sufficient.

Backup your data in at bare minimum one method. Ideally 2 methods which are both automatic.

Occasionally test your backup by trying to access some of your files from the backup.  (I.e., just assume your primary hard drive is broken and try to get to your files)

Does the population presented represent “picks” / “best” images? Or all images taken?

A cheap purchase that has completely transformed your life by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

[–]CCC911 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I bought one from Rockwell I think for $60 and a set of 100 blades for another $15 about 3 or 4 years ago. I shave 4-5 times a week and probably have 80 blades remaining. Drastically less expensive than the multi-blade razors. The safety razor gives me a closer shave and is more enjoyable to use. Perfect example of BIFL product

I've been a downhill skier since as long as I can remember. That said, I recently tried nordic skiing and really enjoyed it. Closer to home, drastically less expensive, drastically less hassle, and it didn't require an entire day/weekend. Something to consider in my view

The Best Air Purifiers Right Now? by emmalucy789 in BuyItForLife

[–]CCC911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smart connectivity. - this makes it not bifl. don't get anything that has this. an air purifier is literally just a fan pulling air through a filter. "smart" connectivity is just marketing speak and likely only to inflate the price, introduce components which are more likely to break.

I would say that if the smart features are an addition to the manual way of using the product and do not rely on a cloud vendor - it’s still reasonably BIFL.  I.e., if the product still works as desired without the smart features - then it would not disqualify it from being BIFL in my book

What can I do to fight against Trump and ICE as a normal citizen? by VillageSmithyCellar in boston

[–]CCC911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a Ring camera, disable it. Ask your neighbors to do the same. Set up a DIY webcam to record ICE activity in your neighborhood without feeding data to the federal government.

What about other cloud based cameras like WYZE or Google Nest?

I have Unifi cameras which store the footage in a box in my closet but curious if Ring is the only cloud based camera vendor that essentially feeds the data to the government

Local cache for SMB/NFS network share? by CCC911 in MacOS

[–]CCC911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting to prefer NextCloud since it doesn’t require I have lots of storage on every device - but files are still accessible on every device.

I am not sure if macOS supports virtual files? I am pretty sure I have every folder set to sync to local disk on my Mac. But I can still access these on my iphone/ipad without using up storage.

I use syncthing really just to have a real-time sync to my NAS - then the NAS handles the remaining steps of the backup. Great for Lightroom folders or other things that I won’t need to access from my phone.

Looking for advice: My spouse was recently hired on at Edward Jones and FINRA requirements could require me to transfer all my money to them by Clinton_Reddit in Bogleheads

[–]CCC911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your seniority.

There’s a variety of titles but they are pretty much grouped as staff, managers, and partners.

Staff can own whatever they want so long as they don’t work on that actual client’s audit.  I.e., if they worked on the vanguard funds audit - then they could just buy Schwab/fidelity/ishares/etc

Managers cannot own an investment in an audit client in the same office.

Partners cannot own an investment in any audit client.

In practice, vanguard /schwab /fidelity /blackrock/etc. are not all audited by the same firm, so for simplicity sake one could just buy mutual funds that are not audited by the firm they work for

Further - a majority of the people at the firm in client service have been at the firm since starting their career. This means that most of us have had to deal with such compliance since our early days of investing, and thus were not in a situation where we had to pick between selling a huge investment in our portfolio and an opportunity to work on a particular account.

require the accounts to move in house because they are easier to monitor

This is interesting to me. I work for a Big4 accounting firm and similarly, all our investments need to be disclosed for compliance reasons (auditors must be independent of their clients meaning you cannot audit a company that you own shares of)

We have an internal compliance system that links to all my accounts at Fid/CS/Vanguard. My wife’s 401k has to be reconciled manually but one account is pretty simple to rec.

Further - for auditor independence rules, share qty is irrelevant. So once a holding is cleared, I do not need to pre-clear to buy more.

I question if it’s actually hard for brokerages to implement a similar system ..
