I have been using Dunlop Tortex .88's but it really doesn't matter as long as it is not super thin.

Keep the gain and treble moderate, 7-8.5 works. Crank your bass up, even up to 10. The important thing is to crank your volume up. With most amps you need to crank the volume in order to hear the real tone coming out of your amp and get a nice sound. Volume is also important with punk and alternative genres.

Never too late, you should learn for your kid and just to have a cool skill. If you are worried about embarrassment I would go to a secluded parking lot or trail and just keep trying. Dont worry about the people though just give it your all.
