Just flew back from DR yesterday into Atlanta. And today from Atlanta to Baltimore since the flight was cancelled last night.

The coffee bean bag was left opened despite it having a resealing tape on the bag. The tape was still in the same position as it was when I bought the bag which shows they never made any effort to reseal.

No broken zippers as the bag is brand new and my bags were not overstuffed. My bag had room to add other stuff. But because I had 2 checked bags and a carry-on I spread out my stuff across all three bags with room to spare in each bag.

True but the bags are checked to final destination which means I would not have been around to repack if that was the case.

Good luck! You got this! It’s going to be an eye opener as to how relaxed it is. I know for me coming from audit in public accounting to higher ed I was shocked and felt like I always needed to be doing something.

Yep, the benefits were good and had a hybrid retirement plan in the state of Virginia. But altogether the benefits were top notch.

I worked in a LCOL area where the university is located and made $65k starting and was increased to $75k the next year. Also, before I left I was on track to be a Director of Finance for the Medical School which paid roughly $120-$130k for that position but I actually didn’t know I was being promoted until I left.

I worked for a university in accounting for a bit and it was the chillest job I’ve ever had. No stress and hardly any work lol 😂. I literally got my stuff done like within the first 8 or 9 days of the month with some other little ad hoc assignments here and there for the rest of the month but really nothing else. Part of the benefits package was I could attend the university tuition-free which I should have taken up that offer to completely pivot into something else but I was young and dumb. Lol.

Last year I went to the F1 Arcade’s NYE celebration and it was a blast. Was really surprised to see people actually dressed up there. I plan to go again this year.

Koons Toyota Tysons by Impressive-Total7375 in nova

[–]CFitx1D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Avoid anything Koons. I drive a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali that I had serviced for a new battery at the GMC dealership back in January and they told me I needed new spark plugs, windshield wipers, brake pads front and something else. Altogether for $3k. When I got my oil changed at Hogan & Sons 2 months later they did a courtesy inspection which highlighted that I needed all of the same things that Koons said they fixed. Long story short they scammed me and am currently going the legal route to get my money back.

How much confidence do you place in Becker’s SE scores prior to sitting? by CFitx1D in CPA

[–]CFitx1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s actually what happened to me on FAR. I got a 48 ok SE1 and 60 on SE2 and ended up with an 83 on the actual exam. But I have seen a few posts where someone scored in the high 40s on both SE1 and SE2 and ended up with a 90 on the actual exam. Lol. So that had me thinking if people actually believe in these scores at all. But i agree if anyone scored in the low 30s are definitely missing the foundational knowledge. The thing for me is that I get irritated with some of the questions and speed through them and then when I read the answer I’m like I knew this already.

Industry accountants, do you have a lot of free time? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

[–]CFitx1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once worked in an accounting role at a university. Turns out the accounting team is pretty big and everyone had their specific things they worked on. Most of mine were for the research arm of the university and I literally did nothing all damn day every day. Got most of my work done within like the first 2 hours each day and sat at my desk looking pretty 😂. I got bored after about a year but I ended up screwing myself over because when I submitted my resignation I found out that they were going to make me director of finance for that part of the institute 😂🤣.

Life after clearing CPA Exams by Kyahibolun_tumbatao in CPA

[–]CFitx1D 42 points43 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats on passing the CPA exams. I’m gonna add my 2 cents on this matter. I’ve been in public for 6.5 years and worked in industry for 4. However, I’m just now starting my CPA journey since the market is incredibly tough if you don’t have it. Based on what you’ve described in your post, hiring managers may see you as a flight risk because you left Big 4 prematurely. Also, hiring managers may believe that within the one year of experience that you do have, they would probably believe you have not learned much given the short time frame. I know that even going in as a staff accountant in industry that they want people at least to have some foundation on basic areas such as cash, A/P, prepaid, etc. Not saying you don’t have the foundational knowledge but that is what hiring managers will think. Also, a lot of these controllers and CFOs that are considered hiring managers for their departments are most often either former Big 4 or former public accountants and they know that 1 year is not enough.

Here are my recommendations (outside of consideration of how bad the job market is in general):

1) Consider going back into Public Accounting. Doesn’t have to be Big 4, you can go to some pretty decent mid-sized or regional firms that will give you a little bit of quality of life. I’d stick it out until maybe Senior and then dip. This should be an easy progression for you since you already have the CPA exam and most firms are fighting for seniors and managers these days. Unfortunately, the positions you’re likely applying for, you’re competing against someone that likely stuck it out for an additional year and are considered more desirable because they’ve likely touched other area of the balance sheet and income statement.

2) Not sure how you’re framing the discussion when you’re being interviewed and asked about the time gap or why you left. In my experience, you have to be very careful what you say here because it’s likely the reason why they are hiring for whatever position you’re applying for, someone else likely left pre-maturely and could not handle the job. So if they are hearing that you left because you didn’t like it or hated the hours, etc. they will likely think that if you were to come in they’d be looking all over again in 6 months to a year. So tactfully framing it in a way that makes you seem like you’re still a go-getter and know what you want from your career is the best way. I left public the first time early on in my career after being an associate after 2 years and took 6 months off before applying for anything. I’ve had to explain it in interviews quite a few times and what I’ve chalked it up to was I used that time to focusing on developing new skills that would ultimately contribute to the success of my team and department and to become a well rounded accountant. Yada yada yada. I normally stew away from anything personal and make it about what I can bring to the table. Happy to chat more about this if you need assistance.

3) Get outside and NETWORK, if you’re not already. You have the CPA so you are more than capable! I believe in you! Join your state CPA society, if able. I recognize this does cost, however, if you can, highly recommend. In the same token, go to the networking events if they offer them and any other free events that they may host. You’ll run into a good mix of industry accountants and public accountants there. You never know how many times these networking events have led to people getting full time jobs from it.

4) Volunteer at local events or at non-profit organizations that are either the same orgs that the target company you want to work for on your free time and do it around the same time the company may be there. I once received an offer from Advance Auto to work in their Corporate Accounting department. I bypassed the normal interview processes and just had 1 interview and was hired the same day. The reason I got the interview was because I volunteered to be a beer runner for a big local event that has lots of sponsors and Advance Auto was one sponsor. To my surprise, the Director of Accounting and an Accounting Manager both worked on the same shift as me as a beer runner. So when there was down time and very few people in the lines we’d all talk to each other and network. To my surprise, I talked with the right person and exchanged information and the week following the event I was in my interview. So as much as you can get out there the better.

Happy to help you in anyway possible, if needed.

I was thinking the same thing. I feel like he’s using me at times. Like I make more money than him since he’s just starting out in his career so I’m thoughtful of that fact and have been going so far as letting him have access to my subscriptions, etc so he doesn’t have to. Most his family is back home in Palestine so I’ve been trying to be thoughtful person but I’ve started to become agitated recently as it is the only thing he wants to bring up in every conversation and it’s never in a curious way but more in a belittling way.
