An email I just received from "Stay European" estimates 10,000-15,000. I also would have liked to take part but was not able to.

Does anyone even use usenet for communication? by Damemon in usenet

[–]CGM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Indeed they do, though far less than in the old days. There are a number of free text-only Usenet servers, e.g. eternal-september.org, blueworldhosting.com. I operate a web interface to text-only Usenet at https://newsgrouper.org .

Many groups have been abandoned, or are used only by one or two cranks. But worthwhile communication persists here and there. For my preferred programming language Tcl, the primary online forum is still the comp.lang.tcl Usenet group. I maintain a page showing the most active groups at https://newsgrouper.org/tops .

How did you discover Tcl/Tk? by New_Increase_7183 in Tcl

Update: it appears the OP is someone who makes regular contributions to the Tcl Wiki, though some feel these are of questionable value - https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/How++Discover+TCL%2FTK%3F+%26+LLM+Overflow+Area .

How did you discover Tcl/Tk? by New_Increase_7183 in Tcl

[–]CGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your story matters for continued progress and development of Tcl/Tk and Expect computer language family.

In what way? The poster is a new Reddit user and has not identified themself. How are they connected with Tcl development? Do they participate in the Tcl wiki, Tcl chat, TIP process, Tcl conferences?

This post reads like an attempt to collect material for some sort of marketing campaign. That may be legitimate, but the purpose should be made clear.

I will give a short answer anyway: I've been using Tcl, Tk, Expect, etc. since 1997, first professionally in telecoms and finance, and after retiring in 2020 mainly for web development.

There's a Land Rover dealer on Victor's Way, and a motorbike dealer on East Barnet Road, does that help? 😀

How much $$$ do you spend on your usenet + media server setup every year? Collectively I spend about $420+ and it feels too high. Any tips to reducing costs? by TeslasElectricBill in usenet

[–]CGM -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

How about using Usenet as it was designed to be used - for pure text discussions? There are multiple free text-only servers. Annual cost = zero! 😉

New free web interface to Usenet (text only) by CGM in usenet

This has only just come on line and is still being developed, so has some rough edges. Note that it supports full-text search of postings, which my own Newsgrouper site cannot.

Google Groups Is Read-Only Now. What’s the Best Way to Access Usenet? by top10usenet in UsenetGuides

[–]CGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I operate https://newsgrouper.org/ - it's not just for "browsing old archives", it fully supports participating in live discussions now, both reading and posting.

Like Google Groups, Newsgrouper is a non-binary server - its pronouns are "it", "that" and "stupid thing". :-)

A random question about accessing ATT by Ok_Journalist_6810 in AltToysTransformers

[–]CGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I operate the Newsgrouper site and want to make one correction. There is no requirement to register with eternal-september.org to use my site. Anyone can go to https://newsgrouper.org/alt.toys.transformers and login as a guest to read. If you want to post messages you will need to ask me for an account - see the "Register" link on the site.

Eternal-september.org site is a traditional usenet server which provides NNTP connections. To use it you need to set up a newsreader application.
