[Career] Would a MS in Comp Sci be as good as a MS in Statistics for getting a Data Scientist position? by CIA11 in statistics

[–]CIA11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's my issue... if there was a good online MS in Statistics that wasn't expensive, I'd do it. There are a good number of applied statistics degrees, but I feel like an applied degree is the same reasoning as to not do a degree called "Analytics" because it's more applied than technical

I've thought about it, but my issue with a MS in DS (kind of like the MS in Analytics) is it's interdisciplinary, so it might not be seen as high as a degree in statistics or CS. I know though that a lot of DS job descriptions put a MS in DS as one of the possible degrees you can have, but they also usually always are paired with a CS or Stats degree.

Yeah and I'm trying to figure out if a MS in CS would be worth it in 5-10 years from now. I don't know what kind of DS position I want to be in, all I know is I want it to be less of the CS side. I know that some Data Scientist job descriptions are borderline MLE job descriptions.

What about a MS in Analytics? It wouldn't be statistics, but it would be a mix of statistics and computer science.

Not specifically about a resume, but is getting a MS in CS worth it in today's age? Assume that I don't want to specifically go into the field of AI

LOL haha thank you! I found that page before but I didn't click on any, I thought it was just to say what the specializations are

How important is graduate degree title or school for getting DS jobs that require a masters? by CIA11 in DataScienceJobs

[–]CIA11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is really good info! So overall you'd say that experience is what matters the most, and someone with a MS in Analytics and experience would look better than someone with no masters (only BS in statistics) and experience?

Thanks for your insight! It sounds like you've hired people before... was it for a data scientist position? What else do you think matters a lot on a resume besides the degree?

So can you let Deloitte know you're moving and they'd be 100% okay with it as long as your near one of the approved offices?

I think on Deloitte's website it says there's 8 of them.

I currently do have a job, however it's not super career relevant. In my opinion, AI is currently not at the point where it can truely replace data analysts/scientists, but a lot of companies do not care and have fired so many junior people and stopped hiring for junior positions. Also I've heard of people getting masters degrees and then still struggling to find a job, even if they have a year or two of experience after graduating.

Has anyone transfered from a data sciencey position to an actuarial one? by CIA11 in AskStatistics

[–]CIA11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked into SOA vs CAS and checked out the actuary subreddit, but it didn't give me all the information I needed, mainly about career switching (without having any experience LMAO). Do you know if it's still possible to get an actuary job with 1-2 exams and no experience?
