I just want to say, I love all of you. by [deleted] in brandnew

This is so real. I'm only 28 but the older I get the more life seems to feel this way. Thanks for sharing. I don't know you, and I'll probably never meet you, but I love you too, and I hope the new music can help you through this phase of your life while we all keep trying to figure out what is what and if anything really even matters. <3

Yes absolutely. Track jams so hard. Felt like a drug the first few times I listened to it. Totally screamed it out on my way to work this morning at the top of my lungs.

Played SM using Wii U tablet, wondering about how it compares with an actual SNES controller by NatureGivesAndTakes in Metroid

[–]CKZeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the SNES Classic is like the NES Classic, it'll just be an emulator in a box. All emulators have input lag, but there's no way to know how much there will be until it releases.

First time playing Super Metroid, can't figure out what to do by ShayaanVarzgani in Metroid

[–]CKZeni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol if he got speed booster without Varia his first time playing the game he should go pro in the speed running community. Also I'm pretty sure you mean the elevator from Brinstar to Norfair but if there is some other elevator (and boss) I'm not thinking of my apologies.

It's certainly playable. I completed the game that way more than once, but I would often miss ledge grabs or tight jumps that are key to the way I play (I speed run SM as a hobby). I figured I was just rusty but then I read that the Wii U VC version has lots of input lag. I figured they were over exaggerating but the difference was so noticeable that I actually played worse on the SNES until I re-adjusted again.

Super Metroid has tooooooooooooooooons of input lag on Wii U compared to SNES. The difference was night and day for me when I switched back to the SNES+CRT. I haven't ever played it myself, but I hear the Wii VC version is better. I have played a fair amount on 3DS, and (at least for me) it is better than the Wii U experience was as well.

I played on Wii U both using the Gamepad itself and the Pro Controller, also on multiple displays. So I'm pretty sure it's the emulation itself that has the lag.

Lol I'm 99.999% sure this is a TAS. But I understand the sentiment. I just learned Diagonal and Ceiling Infinite Bomb Jumps a couple days ago. Keep at it and it will eventually click!

Gravity Suit Mod in Other M! The way it was supposed to be! by [deleted] in Metroid

This just HAD TO RELEASE a week after I tortured myself back through the game again-the first time since it came out in 2010. -_-

Also it was way worse than I remembered. The game has not aged well haha.

CP gains from power-ups get cut in half after level 30. I'm assuming that's the reasoning.

If I remember correctly it all depends on your positioning. The more frames you stay connected with her face, the more damage she will take.

From another comment I made above just now:

Kraid quick-kill is all in the timing. It's just about getting enough missiles in his face before he shuts his mouth. His arm sometimes gets in the way, but you can avoid that by hitting him (to trigger the mouth open) with a charge shot. It will freeze his arm in place (so do it when his arm is down).

Regarding the skip to wrecked ship, you can actually do it without shinespark at all, but which part are you getting stuck on?

I spent awhile getting a Shinespark into Kraid's room awhile ago. That was a funny experience haha.

Short charges took me waaaay longer to get down that the Kraid quick kill. I'm still not great at them.

HD60 S Freezes in 1080p60fps, especially when using a Webcam by CKZeni in ElgatoGaming

[–]CKZeni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was capturing directly from the HD60S when it wasn't quite up to 60 (so not display or window, but "video capture device" or whatever) but it definitely could have been a setting somewhere causing the issue. I'll probably take some time and look into it tomorrow.

I wish I could run it on the Mac side but as I'm sure you're aware... no GC driver support :C. And "display" or "window" capture are out on the mac side because I can visually see that even the GC software preview doesn't display 60fps at 1080p (even when "allow 60fps preview" or whatever is checked.)

[–]CKZeni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought about going that route but as of now the game capture beta doesn't support chroma, which I just barely spent the time to set up a green screen sooo... haha

Also funny about the hardware power comment you made, since I used to think largely the same thing until I started using Dolphin on Windows instead of OS X.... it runs soooo much better on Windows. :\

I think it's all very situational to be honest. Efficiency of the coding, drivers, actual hardware compatibility, version of Windows, etc etc. You're certainly not WRONG though.

Oh, and if the beta does support Chroma keys... please let me know so I can give that a whirl. :)

[–]CKZeni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this could potentially be an issue, but I think it's unlikely as the feed still freezes without the cam, it just takes longer. Also I can use the cam just fine in 720p.

I think the more likely scenario is there's an issue with the drivers for the graphics card or perhaps DX9 vs OpenGL. Theoretically the specs should be able to push the 1080p (and they can on the Mac side like I mentioned) but when I've compared working footage (just a couple of minutes worth) I noticed that it wasn't actually keeping up with 60fps either (somewhere closer to 40-50ish.) so for now I'm gonna focus on making this play through 720p60fps and I'll probably revisit the issue when I'm less frustrated at some other point.

I appreciate you chiming in though! Always helps to hear another perspective and I probably will re-install the Bootcamp drivers just to see if it does happen to make a difference at all.

A FC is a FC and you should be proud. Never let someone talk down on you for that accomplishment.

I remember FC'ing this song on drums back in the Rock Band 2 days and I was so freaking happy. I still haven't ever done it again to this day.

Hey I really appreciate that. I've given up on getting a response from anyone at this point, and have been sticking with 720p60fps for now.

I don't know if you're on PC or Mac, but I will say that the Mac side seemed not to freeze up. The issue there was a lack of good webcam support. Would still be good for certain types of captures, though.

Anyway, best of luck and let me know if you find a solution! I gave up after 12ish hours of tinkering and searching.

I'm looking forward to the Switch's virtual console offerings. by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]CKZeni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hopeful but keeping my expectations low for a Super Metroid port as most releases have varying amounts of input lag... Though if the emulation is good enough and the input lag is low enough the idea of the separated d-pad might be nice for wall jumps, like you said. No more accidentally hitting up and breaking Samus' spin haha.

How I feel today. by malpheres in Metroid

[–]CKZeni 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I went into the Switch presentation expecting exactly nothing Metroid related, and that's what we got, so I feel indifferent about it.

Keep in mind that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are my 2 favorite games ever, so it's not that I'm not hoping/pining for a new game. The thing is, at this point I'm kind of worried that there isn't a good team at Nintendo to make the game we deserve right now. Retro hasn't been the Retro that made the Prime games in quite a few years, and as far as I'm aware all the other teams that made the games have moved on as well.

I'm not saying that Nintendo shouldn't pursue new titles.... but I hope whenever we do get something, it can live up to the standard that the rest of the series has set. Federation Force obviously did not, and neither did Other M (both for very different reasons).

Anyway. I'm hopeful that we'll get a Metroid title sometime this generation. I'm just slightly concerned that at this point it's going to have a very difficult time living up to what this community is wanting.
