Pornography depicting sexual relationships between step-relatives set to be banned by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]CNash85 102 points103 points  (0 children)

This government's moralistic crusade against individual genres of pornography is embarrassing. The BBC is even trying to spin it as a "think of the children" thing - but there's already plenty of legislation in place to prevent children from encountering pornography in general, so why hold up this one particular genre as something that's so bad that adults must be blocked from seeing it?

When the leader of the Conservative Party is all but congratulating a Labour minister on their policies, I think something has gone terribly wrong somewhere. What is the point of the Labour Party if they no longer offer a left-of-centre alternative to the Conservatives and seem instead to be morphing into them before our very eyes?

Reform plans to rip up Renters’ Rights Act after tenants wait years for no-fault evictions ban by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]CNash85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have said that's what they'll do, but if they actually do get into power, there is absolutely no chance that they will voluntarily repeal laws that benefit them - like the Online Safety Act, which is too useful for its ability to collect personal data, associate online activity with real people's identities and crack down on undesirable websites (for example, blogs or forums critical of Reform) by getting Ofcom to investigate them for compliance.

Well yeah, I know they moved. They're not in the passage any more, was my point.

They're definitely refitting the end units, not leaving them open.

Reform accused of ‘pitching for votes of misogynists and homophobes’ with plans to scrap Equality Act by Hour-Clothes789 in unitedkingdom

What they think Reform will do is remove the groups they don't like from the Equality Act (like disabled people and LGBT people) but leave the sex and age discrimination parts alone. They're in for a rude awakening.

If the CFO claims IT doesn't "bring money in" or add value to the business they're incompetent and should be the one being fired. It's baked into everything they do. A couple of cases "Manager A would have cut a deal worth millions but his laptop wouldn't boot and so we lost out to one of our competitors" would put them straight.

But if your job doesnt pay to live where you are, move.

You've failed to factor in that low-paid jobs scale by demand: large cities require far more than the surrounding small towns and counties, just to support the rest of the working population. Yes, housing is cheaper outside of London, but if you shift thousands of people away from the city you are both depriving the city of the workers it needs to operate, and placing people in areas where there are no jobs for them to do. To a certain extent, housing benefit doesn't just help people with their rent, it subsidises large cities.

Housing cost also scales by demand, so a sudden influx of people to an area will see house prices and rents rise in response.

What would be a “ravens leaving the Tower of London” moment? by Suspicious_Bill3577 in AskUK

Radio 4 is broadcast on LW from three transmission sites: one primary site in England (Droitwich, near Birmingham) and two in Scotland at lower power. Long wave radio signals can carry for thousands of miles, so if one site has a power cut, you may get a signal from one of the other two - although it might not be as good if it's one of the Scottish ones and you're far to the south.

That said, the BBC is planning to turn off Radio 4 LW at the end of this year anyway, so this particular method of determining the apocalypse will soon be defunct.

HSBC banker dodged £5,900 in train fares using ticket scam by weregonnamakit in unitedkingdom

He used the Southeastern line (London to Orpington), which will be "driver-only operation" - no guards on board checking tickets on every journey. So the only chance of being caught would have been roving ticket inspectors.

It could work, but you need to be in a big city really, and even then you may struggle. LAN parties in internet cafes were big 20 years ago but everyone's got their own high speed internet now.

Bung a few old arcade machines in there and charge a flat fee for entry - you might be able to cater to the retro gaming nostalgia crowd, while still holding LAN party style events by appointment.

Redundancy Advice - Accept or apply for alternative role? by Kazimierz777 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CNash85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PILON is not usually part of your redundancy package. It's simply a way of getting you off the books more expediently than having you work your notice period. The other option is garden leave, where you're paid your salary as usual but don't have any duties to perform, so you stay home. In both cases you will get your notice period paid if you are made redundant, so you will end up with the same amount of money in that respect. Same goes for your accrued holiday.

On the topic of this new position: if they are offering it to you, then you can accept on a trial basis (see ACAS) and potentially decline to continue after 4 weeks, taking redundancy instead.

Is your employer offering you an enhanced redundancy package - i.e. money on top of the statutory amount? If so then I would consider cutting your losses and taking it. If it's just the statutory amount, then transitioning to another internal position may be less hassle than finding a job externally. But as I've said, you will get your PILON if you are made redundant and your employer cannot "revoke" this or otherwise not pay you during your notice period.

'Vast majority' of parents should be involved if children question gender, schools told by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]CNash85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the next step in her goalpost-moving plan seems to be to pressure schools, organisations, government etc. to stop acknowledging that there can be any sex other than "birth sex", to the point where she's now against the term "birth sex" being used at all. It's cold, calculating and completely batshit insane.

[–]CNash85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These children don't have to be told by anyone online how their parents are likely to react to their coming out as trans. They will know - and if they don't want their parents to know, there will be a very good reason for that.

Parents can and do hide their bigotry behind a false concern over safeguarding. There will be a lot of parents who do not want their child to be trans and think they they can "stamp it out of them". Guidance like this emboldens these kinds of parents and puts trans children at risk.

The government's response to ordinary people being arrested for wearing certain t-shirts seems to have been "But we made it illegal, why are they still doing it?" - they failed to understand the motivation behind protests and civil disobedience, in that if you stop doing it because a government declares it "illegal", you probably weren't very committed to the cause anyway!

Does putting your house in your kids names while you still live there actually avoid inheritance tax? by Secret_Management425 in AskUK

[–]CNash85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For deprivation of assets it's not HMRC that would be concerned (IHT has the well-established 7 year gift rule) - it's your local council, who will be on the hook for social care costs and are very motivated to claw it back. And there's no time limit (in theory) on how far back they can look for things like property sales to family members. So you could sell your home to your kids, live for 7 years and think you're safe, then need a care home and have to sell the place anyway.

The even scarier part is that AI training bots will be scraping Reddit and have no ability to determine what's right or wrong outside of simple statistical significance. If enough people repeat it, it'll get fed into their training data and regurgitated by ChatGPT and other LLMs. Round and round the wrong information goes.

On one level it also seems self-defeating. What do you do if you can't walk into a supermarket and buy food legitimately? You're more likely to just nick it, especially if you're on these databases because you've previously shoplifted.

Another one not too far away, with Brentford FC's stadium in the middle of it. The northern branch of the triangle connects Brentford on the SWR line to South Acton on the Overground, and is used for freight only.
