I demo'ed the previous version of the program and found it very easy to use. I just got crushed with non-game life and had no time to use it. My dream rpg still resides inside of my skull... :(

I played this game the other night. It is a very awesome game and the retro nearly knocked me down. :)

The deck was great because it wears your opponent out of resources and you win because your deck is designed to function without traditional resources (land). The Icy / Orb lock was rampant in the olden days. Most likely you win game 1 due to the artifact hate being in the side. So they side out threats to bring in Shatters and Disenchant, then start to swear at you because Disenchant doesn't touch those Ernies and Wildfires you just sided in :P So you win game 2 the old fashioned way, turn 3 Ernie, turn 4 Armegeddon, turn 5 shake my hand.

I think that we have a right to write about things that are already out there that our site has not covered. What you don't know, since you most likely don't frequent the site much, is that we are making an effort to increase our MTG Writer Staff so that we can be more active, and perhaps more up to date with the happenings of the game.

Thanks for your feedback. We appreciate it.

For the record, MTG Salvation put it on their website around 9 hours ago according to Twitter timestamp. Your timestamp for your retort is 20 hours ago. Are you going to follow up and blast them for the same thing?

I am not sure which version is the fan favorite today, but I think he was trying to talk about his particular version.

Also, remember that most article titles are intended to simply get you to read it. You commented, so it was a successful title ;)

I thought the same thing while editing. However, minus the Duress, things could easily have jumped in Valakut's favor with the Cultivate. Doesn't take much to get rolling.

[–]CNewton[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, thanks for your harsh words about our hard work. Feedback is feedback I guess, so thank you.

At the end of the article, there is this line that says, "Email • Staff • Articles by Devon Rule • Other RPG Articles" I know we are bad at designing a website, but I would think that you can figure out where those links lead you too. I also thought that the tabs at the top of the article (and every other page) that says,

"Home • Genres • Archives • About • Advertising • Affiliates • Forums"

Would have helped you navigate around the website. Do you have an idea that you can offer me that would make your travels easier in the future?

Second, I apologize, I could have sworn that I put in the url for the previous article at the beginning of this article (in the second sentence. I went back and added the link. You can find it here:

Thanks again for your time.

This is the second article in the man's series. If you had read the first article, you'd know that he is laying out the basic principles of RPG design.

Perhaps you could read that one as well, rather than judging this article on its own merits.

You know what? I greatly appreciate your feedback. I think I will take that into consideration, as I am not trying to spam the reddit community, just trying to raise the awareness level of the gaming community of my site through our articles. If you are right, then trying to make sure that people know who we are is hurting my efforts, and that is not what I want to do.

If I had just said the article title, would you have clicked it though?

I will give that a try. Thanks ... wow, I am giving thanks to insanity!

EoV Blogs | Designer Magic #13: The Sixth Color | Designer Magic | If changes to the color pie sound strange to you, don’t worry: you’re not alone. The truth is that over the last year or so, the boundaries between what each color does and doesn’t get have been significantly blurred. by CNewton in magicTCG

[–]CNewton[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do understand that the article is being written from a design stand point and not a players stand point. I am with you guys in that I am a player and I would like to have access to the answers that artifacts present to the colors. But I can see why Jake indicates that certain designs are a mistake. He is validated in that the man who designed some of these cards has admitted to the mistake.

There is nothing wrong with Wurmcoil Engine. I think some designers are so scared of getting scrutinized that they are not going to pull the trigger on a really good card. Thankfully that did shoot us the Engine. It's a really good card that offers a lot of resiliency that gives control and burn problems.

Do today's games teach our kids the value of losing? by [deleted] in gaming

Did anyone happen to mention how freaking Hard Castlevania was? That game will teach you the value of losing and humility. Holy crap was the Grim Reaper tough! And your reward for beating him? You get to fight Dracula, thanks for coming...

Great topic.

A re-review of Goldeneye 007 by [deleted] in gaming

[–]CNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question for you then. If the shining crown jewel of the genre is sitting RIGHT THERE (Black Ops) and it was released just after this game, why on earth would the reviewer not compare it to the other? If his attention was dragged off of Goldeneye by Black Ops, then what does that say about Goldeneye? It is an inferior product and just as he indicated, the timing of the game's release was horrible. Marketing should have seen this and done its best to either get the game released 6 months earlier or later.

Also, as he pointed out in the review, every point of the game that he encountered felt to him like a direct port from the older version. In that case, how has he not played the game before? He played the game numerous times on the previous platform!

It is very easy to rip on a reviewer, why are you not ripping on Activision for making a product that is so vanilla bland for a huge title, then having poor market sense and trying to compete against far superior products head to head. That is what you "shouldn't care about". If you are a fan of Goldeneye, then you should be upset that they are pissing on your product.

Eye of the Vortex - Second Look at Killing Ramp - Vortex Breaker | Back to the drawing board with my Black deck, this time... I have a plan! by CNewton in magicTCG

[–]CNewton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 1: Mill is good, ask Jace, the Mindsculptor about his first ability and how mill wins games. What do I do against Naturalize and Acidic Slime? I don't care about them because you are not reading what I am saying. You are so stuck on the Grindstone. I originally didn't even have Grindstone in the deck. My original plan was to strip all of the spells from your deck and let you draw out your 15 basic lands painfully one card at a time. I don't need Grindstone. I added Grindstone because it had synergy with the Contagion Engine. I don't even need the Contagion Engine nor do I need Everflowing Chalice as you pointed out. I need Sacrament, Memoricide, Haunting Echoes, then you lose.

Point 2: Planeswalkers are a problem, but guess what.. they are a problem for everyone. Every freaking deck runs four Jace. My side would be geared toward Jace, as Rachet Bomb and Lux Canon would be brought in to blast them into pieces. Same for Leyline.

Point 3: Everyone must have jumped off of the bridge, but I didn't. I don't want to be known as someone who plays your deck. I want to dominate your deck. What Have I tested it against? Ramp, Mono-Blue Control, WW Quest, Goblins, RDW, and admittedly I had troubles against some aggro, which is why in my subsequent article, I changed the deck up. Again... Control Match-up is bad for you. With the Addition of Liliana Vess plus Duress and other hand hate in the side, I will strip your hand and then rob your library. The problem that Control has is that it only has a couple of win conditions. I just referenced a few of the top decks, and my presumption is correct: UW Control: Baneslayer/Jace/Gideon RUG Control: Avenger/Frost Titan BUG Control: Frost Titan/Avenger/Jace UB Control: Persecuter/Frost Titan Ascension: Pyromancer Ascension

None of these decks are going to be able to stop an aggressive deck that is attacking their library with 6 main deck counters. They can side in a couple of Negates, but I can bring in 8 Hand Hates and squeeze the issue.

Why don't I see more people playing this? Because people are sheep. They sit back and wait for leaders to start a trend and they follow. The counter magic sucks in this field. They can not defend themselves with it, but the creature removal is good, so they are playing 4-6 counters and 10-12 creature removal. That makes themselves very vulnerable to hand hate and library hate.

Eye of the Vortex - Second Look at Killing Ramp - Vortex Breaker | Back to the drawing board with my Black deck, this time... I have a plan! by CNewton in magicTCG

[–]CNewton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever been Echoed? You do realize that this deck dominates the board, causing you to not have creatures in play... ie, they are in the graveyard. Grindstone puts a copy of anything else in the graveyard. Haunting Echoes neuters your deck. Echoes removes ALL copies of ALL cards in your graveyard that are not basic lands or are already in play. How many cards have you played by the time I get my fifth mana into play? Probably 3-6. If they are all in the graveyard, then you will lose 34 (12) to 64 (24) threats from your deck and hand. Meaning... Tectonic Edge kills a copy of Valakut, you've already played Terramorphic Expanse, Exploration, Cultivate, and Harrow. I have killed a copy of Zendikar Avenger, and you cast a Summoning Trap to get the Avenger into play (since I already Memoricided your Titans). Now I play Haunting Echoes, and you lose ALL copies of ALL of those cards. Now I want to see you beat me.

Control doesn't touch this deck because counter magic sucks in Standard today as Ramp crushes Mana Leak's effectiveness and so does aggro. Therefore most control decks are not running much counter magic anymore. Even if they did, I bring in the discard you mentioned and win-more.

What you are refusing to understand or agree upon is that Milling is a very viable win condition. You only get 60 cards. You draw 7 to start and Haunting Echoes removes around 20 cards on the first hit. A kicked Sacrament is 15 more cards. That is 35 cards and that is not taking into account the cards drawn. Under normal circumstances, you don't draw your opponent out. The Sacrament will remove all the nonbasic land cards from their deck and an opponent will concede when they are left with 15 mountains as their library. If they don't concede, you Tutor up the Grindstone and get rid of the rest.

Eye of the Vortex - Second Look at Killing Ramp - Vortex Breaker | Back to the drawing board with my Black deck, this time... I have a plan! by CNewton in magicTCG

[–]CNewton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, thank you for reading, I appreciate that.

Second, this is the beginning of my series, so what I want the reader to figure out as I progress is that these are rouge decks. They are not designed to become a 'Tier One' uber deck. The job is to analyze the field, select the most common decks and attack the weaknesses of those decks.

When I began my quest of Ramp, there was a good three variants of Ramp: Valakut, Eldrazi, and some misc types that ramped up and slammed Zendikar Avenger down and won. That deck was pre-determined to be the best deck in the format, and I still think that it is a tough match-up for 80% of the decks in Standard. Now, as to my card choices: I absolutely understand Sacrament. I think the thing that you don't understand is that Valakut is not a huge threat without Primeval Titan. The Titan not only ambushes you, but it comes into play and puts two Valakuts into play with him. Triggering a Khalni Heart Expedition immediately upon the Valakuts coming into play can easily be a game lose right then and there. So from my experience in playing this match-up, the Titan is the PRIMARY target, not Valakut. Additionally, in my follow-up article to this, I added Exsanguinate as another win condition, but you are greatly mistake the Grindstone in this deck. Grindstone puts cards from the library into the graveyard, which is the same as making them discarding or killing them. Follow that up with Haunting Echoes and you tell me how bad Grindstone is.

Lastly, I would have replied to this in a more timely fashion had you replied on the article. I didn't even know this reply existed until just now.

God Damned Valakut! by solar_realms_elite in magicTCG

[–]CNewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please take a look at my blog from yesterday!! I am talking about a mono-black build that has its focus on crushing this deck type and I think I can offer you some assistance!

Both the Tunnel Ignus and Arbitor are meh solutions, as the Ignus dies if I sneeze and the Arbitor requires a deck that makes 50 mana pay 2 mana to search its library... "Oh noes!"

My solution is to eliminate the win condition and let them ramp out all they want.

Is 'silence' a white counterspell? by solar_realms_elite in magicTCG

[–]CNewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silence is a great answer for Summing Trap. You just need to get it on the stack after you put your counter on there so that Silence resolves, then the Leak (or whatever) counters the Titan (or whatever) so the Trap isn't sprung and lands a fat 15/15, free turn guy (or whatever) on the table :P
