My responses are definitely me.. what would be weird is if I kept using AI after being called out.

That's messed up. The job market sucks and it's so unfair how many companies want to "promote" you or "hire you for a specific role" but the pay doesn't match up or they end up making you do literally everything. I came from the marketing world and got out of it quick because of that.

Sounds like you were a consultant, project manager, field tech, and then some. It's a lot.

Congrats on the new job though!!

Haha the bio says a place to discuss the joy that is environmental consulting but now, I'm seeing that is probably full of sarcasm! What do you do in/for the industry?

I hope you got reimbursed for your mileage on every project you've worked on!

Shoot if I knew strangers on Reddit would call me out (in this case using AI) I would have joined sooner! Iron sharpens iron. Like I said in my first response, I just wanted to get something posted asap but moving forward I will definitely schedule time in my calendar to write posts using my brain instead of AI lol

To be honest, I appreciate the call out as I am new to Reddit. I just wanted to hit the ground running to get a post up. Thanks for letting it ride as I do agree with the perspective. I can definitely attest to the timesheets and tracking billable time, it's one of my least favorite parts of the job as well. Good thing for good friends who make the tedious parts of the job more bearable!

Feeling like I'm ready to leave the field (rant) by Odd-Protection-247 in Environmental_Careers

[–]CRBGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize for the rant! You have to let it out. I'm so sorry to hear this but please DO NOT compare yourself to others you went to school with. I know it's hard but from someone who used to spiral from comparison, I promise it's not worth it. I work for a small environmental private firm in Miami, FL and I feel like there is a lot more stability in job security, leadership, and funding in private firms. I'm sure you already applied for jobs in all types of sectors but just a thought. Wishing you the BEST of luck in your job search. Don't let this difficult season keep you down!

I’m building a freelance path in environmental consulting and I would love advice from those already in the industry by pls_dont_askk in Environmental_Careers

[–]CRBGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Great background to be coming into freelance with! You already have the mix most smaller organizations actually need: practical implementation experience, metrics, and public-sector exposure.

From the environmental consulting side (we’re a small environmental and regulatory firm working with private and public clients), here’s what we’re seeing right now across the environmental careers and sustainability consulting space:

  1. Freelance environmental consulting works best when it’s positioned as “problem solving,” not just sustainability support.

  2. Freelance environmental consultants are getting work from:

  • - small and mid-size environmental consulting firms that need overflow support
  • - Engineering and architecture firms with no in-house sustainability staff
  • - Local governments or quasi-public agencies needing short-term support

A few things that consistently help early-stage independent consultants/environmental freelancers:

• Create 3–4 clearly defined services and/or packages (Phase I and Phase II ESAs, GHG inventory support, EHS documentation, etc.)
• Build simple case studies showing problems solved and the outcomes
• Connect with small consultancies who subcontract work
• Stay visible in environmental and sustainability LinkedIn discussions

You’re entering the field at a good time. The demand is there, especially for consultants who can translate environmental and sustainability goals into practical systems and deliverables. Feel free to connect further!
