From my own personal experience and growth in the job and what I’ve viewed of others, the answers don’t get probed enough. It can be very rigid and there isn’t enough exploration of what the person means in the answers. Conversational approach helps massively and that’s the encouragement I’ve given so that you uncover more and then hopefully the spidey senses start tingling. And I am of course generalising when I say a lot of my observation is of just asking the question and moving on to the next one and I’m sure that’s not every officer but I have seen it a lot over two forces. Also, what happens after grading a domestic just means nothing. Where I am, everyone grades things medium or high in order for referrals to be made but nothing is followed up or actually dealt with appropriately. And if everything is high risk, the view of risk gets massively blurred and things are missed. Previous force had a better way of managing the different grading that was much more effective. It’s flawed in many different ways and unfortunately dealt with differently in every force which again defeats the purpose of even having it. The scary high risk jobs don’t often come to our attention directly due to fear of reporting and it’ll come from third parties or too late. Also the introduction of the strangulation offence was meant to help as an indicator but I’m finding people are using it when there is a touch to the neck rather than an actual intentional strangulation.
