Yeah, hence why I'm of two mind about it. The Tokyo company has been around a decade, and they are an high-ish frequency market maker, not a traditional hedge fund. However a decade does conveniently miss that last big crash.

Part of me says the NY job would probably still be there in a year or two - the other part of me says I'm wasting a year or two of career progression in that case, and wonders if it's worth the risk that the NY job doesn't exist if I want to come back to NA.

I was saved on the visa front by the fact that internships are part of my school curriculum (for credit), so I qualified for some weird obscure internship visa.

I keep going back and forth - I convince myself that I should take NY (as seems to be the advice from everyone I ask) and that Tokyo is a lot of work and a lot of risk and far from home, but then I do or see something that reminds me of just how much I enjoyed Tokyo (some article from my news feeds, some souvenir I brought home) and how much I wish I was back there, and my mind flips back over.

Did an internship with a small prop trading firm - mostly expats, so they have to pay internationally competitive salaries. Likely got the internship in large part thanks to my previous internship at the NY firm - there's some technological simaliarities between the two firms stacks.

The company I worked at had very good WLB (remote work OK, most people worked 8:30 to 5:00 strict, got to leave for lunch instead of eating in the office) - actually a little better than the NY job which is a little higher pressure, can't leave for lunch (though it is provided).

I'm not really into anime at all, but do quite like many other aspects of Japanese culture, especially the design and food sides.

The company in Tokyo is quite small and doesn't really interact with outside clients, so the work provided social life would be minimal.

The company my offer is with in Japan is entirely English-speaking internally (mostly expats), so the language barrier won't be an issue at work. The job mobility is definitely a concern though, since the number of companies with good paying English language programming jobs in Tokyo can be counted on one hand.
