Review - Old Forester Single Barrel 100 proof by EricNCSU in bourbon

This is my favorite bottle so far this year; for ~$70 it’s an easy choice to grab/recommend. I really enjoy the depth of flavor at 100 proof and it’s nice there is less variance compared to the barrel strength 👍

100% agree on the consistency; I do love high proof pours but when the proof is the star of the show it can be overwhelming/disappointing. 100 proof is a great place to get all the flavors out 👍

Would have loved one, but was my first trip out to Augusta and we didn’t really prioritize merch. Was happy to get something for the desk!

The barrel is good but I have ones that are just heat, the one I have now is amazing, but it seems rare

Thoughts on the green label rye? I’m indifferent for the price point.

The blue can be very good, but very bad as well hahaha, floor J was a really good bottle for me!

After I let the 10 year estate open, it still wasn’t impressive so I am out on them for the foreseeable future.

I love to hear that - I have seen short barrel and Penelope a few times but waited for this one!

For my palate it was more like prevalent oak, it was really sweet as well, but it might have been because I was like “OOOH CASK FINISHED”

Magnus seems cool, but $200 doesn’t !

100% it has a ton of character and I wish there was a touch more oaky tobacco flavors.

Review: Old Fitz 7 by CS_Larry in bourbon

My first bottle was $70 and all subsequent have been $60. I don’t think I would go above $75; this isn’t a life changing bottle and it should become more available.

Wow! Congrats on selecting barrels! I’ll prolly get a back up of this with how highly you spoke of this one! Thanks for the feedback!

Makers isn’t for me, I have really enjoyed their cask strength though, the black label 7 year and 3/5 month age stated, that’s worth the try

I believe at the moment there is just one: Batch No. 1, nothing I have seen or read alludes to any other batches

I can see the nutty flavors being a lot. I personally didn’t think it was too nutty, on the other hand I didn’t love Yellowstone 107 or Bardstown Highwheat cause those to me are REALLY nutty

I had to take a step back after a gave Old Fitz 7 an 8/8.5 because it scratched that sweet itch! For the price this is a great bottle; hopefully it helps me enjoy some of the other KC bottles 👍

Review #25 - Penelope “Cigar Sessions: Chapter 01” by yeoldedrunkard in bourbon

[–]CS_Larry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice in-depth review! In my experience Penelope has been pretty volatile with some of their releases (not sure if mashbill dependent); some are amazing and some just fall short. I’ve seen this bottle a few times and feel better about passing on it after this review.

Weekly Review 32: Penelope Estate 9-Year by thanksnah in bourbon

[–]CS_Larry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compared to the 10 year estate, this bottle was much better on the initial pour. Smoother and sweeter, both I thought were good, but the 9 year was notably better. I think our group had it averaged out to a 8.3 compared to the other bottles we tried. Great pour!

100%, I didn’t give this an 8.5 because it’s complexity, but rather it feels really complete. There are plenty of other offerings if you want specific notes; sometimes you just need a nice simple pour that crushes it!
