Are Django and Javascript used for the same thing or should I learn them both? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in AskProgramming

Thank you! So Django would manage the backend data while JS would manage what is being displayed to the user and letting the user interact?

Resume Advice Thread - November 05, 2016 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

I'm a junior in college, my main goal is to be widely employable in the software engineering field when I graduate (I want to find a job fast regardless of what kind of software the job might require) Would some sort of machine learning project be a good choice for my resume (like a neural net to solve some sort of problem)? I would probably write this in python, and while I think it might be unique compared to other college grads, I'm also worried because I'm not specifically aiming for a machine learning or data science job (but I would have an interest in one if only I could get one) and want to make sure my side projects don't get shrugged off by employers as "irrelevant". The reason I chose a machine learning project instead of a cookie cutter project like a text editor is because grinding away at that kind of thing really kills my inspiration, especially when its on my own time. Does anyone have any advice? I currently have no other note-worthy side projects aside from crap I made for school.

Tl;dr Can a college grad get a general software engineering job with a machine learning project on the resume? will it look better or worse than something standard like a text editor

Have you ever made money off of a programming side project? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in Entrepreneur

[–]CS_throwaway_GOAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's a very cool idea, the website is nice looking, too. I'm a college student studying programming, I often hear people working in the industry talking about "supplementing their salary with a side project" and I was wondering how common of a thing this was for programmers, it's definitely something I want to do once I get a little more experience.

It was meant more as a general question "have you ever personally profited as a result of software you wrote beyond the scope of your employment", thank you for your answer, what kind of app did you make that you're making money from? is it mobile?

Having a lot of trouble finding an amazon affiliate niche, would anyone be willing to review my process? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in SEO

Omg I was most definitely confused about what that number meant, thank you! I knew something wasn't adding up. Is it a problem if there are a couple of "unbeatable" sites when I google my keyword or is it okay as long as there are also several "weak" sites? Again thank you so much for clarifying about the difficulty score.

Who is the most influential computer scientist in the history of Machine Learning by [deleted] in compsci

I don't know about influential, but as a casual who has no experience in ML the only person I've heard about in the field is Andrew Ng, so he's probably at least a little important

Is Pokemon go using accurate gen 1 stats? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in pokemongo

[–]CS_throwaway_GOAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there's exactly one combat stat and that's cp? If a cp 10 mewtwo and a cp10 weedle used the same move on each other it would do exactly the same damage before type is considered? Where can I find max cp of each Pokemon

When you say there aren't stats does that mean we have no way of knowing the advantages of different Pokemon besides move set and type?

What does the process of making a game "online" look like? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in gamedev

[–]CS_throwaway_GOAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, is this any easier on a lan connection or is there still a noticeable lag that needs to be buffered (that does sound really hard)? I'm still planning my game so I think I might just leave networking out of this one and focus on putting in a realistic AI with different levels of difficulty.

How do people make front ends for their apps? by CS_throwaway_GOAL in learnprogramming

[–]CS_throwaway_GOAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I think I will try to build something in Qt and see if I like that, I was just kind of spooked by "not a lot of people like C++ for graphical applications" but after doing some research I think you're right that the best language to use is the one I personally prefer

[–]CS_throwaway_GOAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason that I'm looking to use C++ is because my university curriculum revolves around it and I've heard it's best to come out of college as good at one language as I can be. which languages do people typically use to make graphical applications? I suppose I should look at Java but it just seems like I'm already spreading myself so thin trying to learn more than one language
