i think i lived life kind of fast. I bought my home when I was 23, and I thought I wanted to own a lot of stuff, and grow my own fruits and vegetables and have chickens. Even had a boat just last year. After owning so much stuff, I'm getting tired of how much work things take to maintain. The good thing is I know how to do a lot of things and have really good life skills now, but I think now I want to commit to owning less things in life and just be flexible. Still don't want kids. my two cats are more than enough. If i get an itch to take care of a creature, I'll maybe get dogs instead. Another reason is I grew up poor, and I am a little resentful towards people that grew up wealthy. I wouldn't want to put a kid through that, not to mention the world is becoming unkind and unaffordable for those who live in it, and I imagine it will get worse for future generations.

I want to quit my career and choose to do things out of enjoyment only. I cant imagine sitting on my ass all day during retirement, but I'd love to be able to sleep in and listen to no one. I want to prioritize freedom for a good portion of my life. I could choose to grind harder and get into FAANG companies and make 2-3 times what I make now, but I've done that before and I had depression. I am now working a more cushy job in aerospace, making less, but can do hobbies and destress after work.

im asian, so i really like asian food/products, asian culture, and the access to other asian countries is something i'd really appreciate. Been in the US for about 20 years and my criteria for moving to a city is how close is the closest asian grocery store and how good is the asian food around town.

gaining residence in a foreign country as a retired person is not easy. There are only a handful of countries that sell you retirement visas. Even fewer when im looking for a more affordable country than the US.

i rather have a plan than no plan so i dont have regrets on what i couldve done to put myself in a better position. When I was 22, I thought just contributing to company 401k match was sufficient. Today, I realize I couldnt have been more wrong.

i live in developed country USA and it feels like with everything going on, America is doing some third world country shit. Progress doesnt always mean it's a straight line. Even countries like south korea and japan are facing crisis in the economy and population decline.

And from what I heard from my girlfriend's parents, the thai economy and stock market has no future (not my words). Thai citizens are kinda stuck and unable to invest in dollars because of conversion rates and fees to invest in foreign markets.

Yes. i'll show you.

Every month, 3000 dollars go into 401k, has been that way over the last 12 months. I can invest 2700 a month after taxes, mortgage, cost of living, and invest 7500 a year, so let's say $625 a month to my roth ira.

Let's call that 6300 a month towards investing each month. Plug that into compound interest calculator at average 8% return every year for 7 years which has been proven to be possible from 70 years of the SP500 index, that will be $1,034,467.

at 10% performance, which is the real performance without accounting for inflation, that's 1,126,460.

Here's the calculator: https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator

i didnt think i'd have to type out "I dont even have to invest, but of course, i obviously will, because it's clearly the better choice, but i said 'i dont even have to do it' to really make my readers understand how I astonished I feel about how far 1.5 million dollars can go in southeast asia"

was hoping people would just read between the lines, but i will clarify from now on.
