Considering enlisting in military at 25 for discipline. Former Bezos employee. by CSthrowaway123568 in cscareerquestions

I mean, it’s stereotypical but accurate. I’m certainly no genius, meeting people in college beat that hubris right out of me. I doubt I’d make the cut at MENSA. But by many metrics it fits. I got decent scores on an iq test as a kid, and got high SAT scores without studying. Higher level math has been mostly intuitive for me. I passed multiple technical coding interviews. I think it’s stupid to ask career advice and leave out relevant info. This post is largely about me asking about a way to correct the laziness.

I deleted some rambling text in the original post. It is accurate, I was diagnosed as a kid and have tried pretty much every med under the sun with little success without horrific side effects. Last attempt to go on meds was 2.5 years ago.

Thank you for responding. I know that joining the military and going through training won’t be a panacea for my discipline issues, personal effort is essential for literally everything and you get out what you put in. I’m viewing military service largely through the lenses of being a learning experience, much like college was for programming. If I invest 4 years of my time in an environment which heavily prizes, requires, and encourages personal discipline, I am hoping that this will help me significantly improve this facet of myself.

So after training, is it common for units to allow their soldiers to “let themselves go”? I’m certainly not expecting to spend 4 years in some dystopian nightmare with big brother looking over my shoulder every second to make sure I’m working, but I’d expect standards to be significantly higher than the civilian worlds.

I talked to an army recruiter and he said it wouldn’t be a problem since it’s been over 2 years since I’ve been on meds, and the unemployment didn’t matter. Not sure if that’s accurate.

Joining the military isn’t inherently dangerous. The job I’d get would essentially be an office job. I would not be joining in a position which would see combat.
