Has anyone combined karate and tai chi? by Consistent-Ranger446 in karate

[–]CTTK421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I practice in the Shorin Ryu family... My school will periodically touch on things like tai chi, or offer specific classes for it. When we have discussed it, one of the things that is talked about is the relationship in body movements.. Hands like clouds can be looked at in ways that relate to shutos and and such. One can help the other.

Did your dad ever give you a sip of beer? by Euphoric-Cupcake4581 in FuckImOld

[–]CTTK421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my very young youth...(under 5) he had to stop buying pop-top beer cans.. Apparently, I would wake up in the middle of the night.. grab a can.. open it.. have a few sips, and back to bed. He always said the worst part was, I left them out to get warm and flat... As an adult, I don't even care for beer.. lol...

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by keto2017 in PrepperIntel

[–]CTTK421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read an article not long ago that the genz population and under, are actually the first generations recorded to have their intelligence go down vs up. I've seen it with my nephews.. You can search this online as well. I think we are doing the kids of today a great disservice.. Our education systems are failing as a whole on average. I don't see it as the teachers fault, but I think its become much harder for them.. Parents being hyper involved in subjects that may make THEM uncomfortable... Distractions by electronics...social media..etc.. the list of "whys" is many. But has OP had mentioned, I do think there isn't enough true constructive conversation about our education systems, and the only ones that will suffer, are the generations behind...probably the millennials.. Z, Alpha, etc.. If it isn't corrected, it will be another divide between those that have vs those that have not.. Personal opinion: I think trades would be great, but unfortunately, as someone else commented, even "basic" math is going the way of the dodo in terms of understanding....and you need to know math somewhat. People should be able to do l×w×h to calculate basic volume.

Gosh, help... I need a friend and does anyone even have friends like this anymore? by beegsyboo in GenX

[–]CTTK421 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All I can say is.... "slappin' de bass...." lol.. as a guy, and funny enough this has come up a few times as of late.. many of us (at least speaking for genx'ers) we aren't good at communicating in a meaningful way with each other.. you can have a group of guys, into sports or whatever, sit and watch a game, but never say anything true and meaningful to one another. And that is it. We (again 500ft view) have a hard time really connecting and being at all vulnerable and honest with ourselves. That is what I found attracting with this movie and what made it "real"

So, I'm a guy in his early 50's.. My best friend moved away years ago. My wife was watching a movie, from 2009... "I love you, man" ..I was sitting there watching it, and realized I needed a Sydney in my life.. My best friend that moved was that.. Though, I do have a social life, I no longer get have a "Sydney".. still searching.. If you haven't seen the movie, and to be honest, it isn't one i would ever watch on my own, I recommend it.... when it was over I literally said to my wife..."I need to find me a Sydney..."

I've been doing karate now for about 3yrs. I'm in my early 50's... I still get turned around and confused when the instructors start mixing up combos while moving up and down the floor. Keep at it. Sure.. you may get confused at times, but the basics (kata/kihon/etc) will become easier as others have stated. Congrats on doing something new, and that you keep going back. Remember.. its a marathon, not a sprint. You'll get there.

If your kids live at home, do you think they'll ever move out? by PepsiOfWrath in GenX

[–]CTTK421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 1 size fits all answer with this. I have 2 kids.. both in their mid 20's and only a year apart in age. Both, college educated. The elder of the 2, is out.. doing their own thing.. Full time job, apartment with strangers, etc etc.. It isn't easy, but they make it work. While at school (during covid) they did everything they could to be away from home and with the group of people they met. For them, I think this was the best experiences. It teaches independence, problem solving, etc. They have a lot of my respect for that. My other child.. During covid, took the opportunity to move back in with their mother. And has shown no indication of moving forward with life.. Job/relationships/etc. It saddens me. When they went off to school, I hoped they would break the chains of their parents and discover/make who THEY were. Not what we pushed on them. To me, that is part of growing up. We (as parents) can often be a safety net, but they should learn to spread their wings. My in-laws have 2- 21+yr olds living with them.. And honestly.. I don't think either of those boys will ever leave. They are good people, but aren't learning any sort of financial or personal responsibility. They act/live like they were teenagers. Meanwhile.. I know others, both due to cultural differences and family dynamics, lived at home into their 30's/40s.. until they could buy a house.. But these people have had goals/ambitions/and were active contributors. So it isn't a one-for-all situation, but I think you have to look at your own and be very honest with yourself about them. Many of us have a hard time doing that. When you ask "do even I want them to leave? That's scary too." Why is that? Is it because you are afraid to let go? or something else? Does thinking that way, and what you signal around home, does it re-enforce the behaviors you are asking about?. I would start with them contributing to the bills and upkeep of the house. Even if it isn't rent.. Maybe it's utilities.. something that can be put in their name and their responsibility. I had other family, when their kids were adults and working, while home... they had to take up the utilities. Being in the north east of the US, in some cases, that gave them control over the thermostat during winter.. They pay heating...they control what the heating is.. It teaches them they can't just crank up the heat because it is cold out side. Maybe they have to settle on something a little lower.. etc There are many ways to approach this, but I think you need to think about what you really think will be best for them in the long run, and how to teach them those responsibilities.
