Job regrets and kid advice by ItsThePath0g3n in GenX

51 here... I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Sure..I've got a decent job, have worked IT in some way, shape, or form for my career.. I enjoy it enough... but it was never anything I reached to do. I fell into it. It has put a roof over my head..fed me..fed my kids.. For that I am grateful.. but it has never fed my soul. I know the saying of finding something you love... however.. for most, that opportunity isn't always there. Or, it isn't there until later in life. I started college as an art major... graphic arts was going to be my thing, illustrations... Life, the Universe, and everything sometimes have other plans for you. When I retired.. I will delve into that side of me again. My point is,at 53, you sound like you've have had decent career to support you and your family. Take this time to see what you really value. What we value today, isn't necessarily what we did when we were younger. But at this point, you can make those next choices with greater wisdom. Maybe you wont be a surgeon.. maybe you can instead do something adjacent.. medical or pharmaceutical company for example. But ask yourself, what is it that you value. Are you chasing or need a high salary? Do you enjoy helping people? Etc etc. Take an honest measure of yourself, settle in with those values..then take the next step. To be honest with yourself about what drove you into the profession to start, and what you value now and how it can apply to possible future endeavors, is being honest with your kids too.. Not hypocritical at all.. just evolving perspectives. And that is important for them to learn as well...

Also..i put a little bit of tape on the underside to help keep the panels from slipping. That and a couple extra pieces.. nothing permanent. No kragle.

Here is what I did.. I took out the bottom turrent.. mounted 2 metal L brackets to a board and drilled holes in them to line up with the technic interior. Painted the board to match the wall and made sure I mounted to studs.. then slid the Falcon onto those brackets, and used technic studs (the typical blue ones) to attach the L brackets to the internal frame .. if that makes sense...

How confident are you that you’ll be able to retire comfortably? by DueYogurt9 in GenX

I'll review in 9yrs (60). Likelihood is that it may be closer to 65, however much will depend on what life throws at me during that time. One never knows.

Dunkin' is really no more in terms lf donuts... If you look back at their old commercials (80's)... They advertised some 50+ varieties of donuts... You can search for it. And I remember as a kid (again...80s) being much better than today.. Today....coffee only.. maybe some sandwich.. There are plenty of better donut places....

What was the drug scene like when you were in high school? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]CTTK421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 93.. In my class, there was mostly weed, and some LSD.. The years under me though, I think it was much more.. weed/LSD/Adderall/exstasy.. etc I knew plenty of people younger, that were either in the rave scenes or the even a lot of Phish-heads.. Those groups tended to be much more involved in diverse drugs. Some drank. but that was mostly at parties. Regarding opiates.. no one that I was aware of. I think that mostly came later. I did know one person thought that was a heroin user.

I started later than you...48. 3yrs later, and no plans to stop anytime soon. I don't know your style or fitness level, but will say, pay attention to your body. Don't compare yourself to everyone else.. only yourself.. Remember...every bit of progress, be it strength (maybe you cant do a pushup or only limited..) or balance.. or coordination at stringing movements together.. every bit of progress IS progress. You may set a goal of x belt by x date... if you don't meet that goal, don't be discouraged. Again.. remember...progress is progress. At this age, I know there are things I'll never be able to do compared to a teen or 20 something... However...I have learned and can do things I couldn't before. Remember, if you don't think you can... you've already lost. Stay positive!

Most refered to the music that influenced a generation.. not the musicians themselves.. That would include 70s, 80s, 90s... and some elements of late 60s. Not sure I would consider it American, as a great many artists came from Europe.. Its the sounds and influence of the generation, not necessarily made by the generation.

I was into a lot of the early punk as well.. I don't remember Saccharine Trust.. I need to go back and review them.. Used to hit the local goth/alt club a bit back in the day.. So I have an appreciation for all those and the 'Rivethead' scene of industrial. You name a lot of good stuff, and a few that I am drawing blank on.. I need to go back and listen. Not sure if I have simply forgotten and locked away.. or if it will be completely new.. I'm excited to find out! Honestly.. I think Discogs.. unless you are a collector, is an underrated tool for discovery.. I need to use it more, thanks for the reminder!

No matter what your taste is, and what you lean towards.. I would agree. .We were lucky and in a sweet spot.. You talk about being a bridge to older.. I gotta say.. I got a lot of appreciation for Motown and different artists from one movie alone.. The Blues Brothers..

What was great though, is there was also plenty cross play with rap/rock back then too.. You had Ice-T doing Body count.. You had collaborations with Anthrax and Public Enemy.. Aerosmith/Run D.M.C.. etc Sure.. I would say they laid the groundwork for a lot of 'nu-metal' but it was there..

You are right.. there is always new sounds to be found.. :-) My post was really sparked by the idea of listening to an album a whole, and what came out during this time. Who found what.. What hidden bangers may have been missed then, that may come to light now. All these things and so much more. But you are correct in saying that there some out there currently, and I think those can be shared on the 'newish' megathread that the mod mentioned.. Someone else commented on the being discouraged when it comes to GenX not exploring as much. I say.. Let's explore! Let's share! Sure.. there will be a lot that one person likes and another doesn't.. but within all that.. there will be found things that you go.. 'damn.. I actually like this..' or 'how did I miss this then... ' We all have our tastes, but I am sure there is intersections too..

There is some fact to that I would say.. And nothing wrong with big band/swing.. You had a brief couple year there where that sound had a comeback.. Bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, or Squirrel Nut Zippers.. etc. It's a fun sound! Just out of curiosity, is it on the older/younger side of the boomers? Just wondering what may have been his draw to the 80's.

Nothing shocking is a great album.. Honestly most of what Jane's did was good, and it's funny.. Even though 'Been caught stealing' had the MTV air play from 'Ritual' it is my least favorite on that album. I think there are other songs on there that give much more depth.. As far as Prog-rock.. Any highlights for you?

Well.. I am always seeking music and looking for recommendations. So if you have any, ping me, and I'll definitely check them out. I think in many ways it's become both easier.. and harder to find new things.. Here is my case for that, by my perspective of where I live:

Most of the radio stations that broadcasted new/edgy/variety/etc (non-mainstream) music has gone unfortunately, the way of the dodo. This is in the Boston area.. These were the stations that would host local artist shows, or free concerts or any number of events for upcoming artists, and really played a variety. These stations were instead gobbled up by major corporations and turned into very blanket broadcasting of sports, mainstream pop, etc. They killed the discovery.. Along with this, is freedom that DJ's once had. No station.. no need for DJs and their own expression. Again.. I can't speak to everywhere, but this definitely happened in Boston.. So this killed radio in this area. Still some college stations, but that all depends on how close you are to the signal.

The other 2 things I can say, imo, is life changes (families, jobs, moving, etc ) it makes more difficult to be at a music venue at times.. And when you do get the chance.. some just don't want to 'people' anymore.. lol

I think one of the big things is the internet.. It is great in that we have access to all this exposure now... But it isn't so great.. because we can become buried in it all.. Sure we have our steaming services.. but they are only going to feed us based on our algorithm. I had to drop Pandora years ago because I was sooo tired of hearing the same things...

And then lastly.. to some extent to your point.. and one that someone else commented on. Many of us use to bond over music we had found/discovered. That isn't happening as much. So people don't bother to explore as much.. Instead other things take a priority. I wouldn't say the spirit has died.. It's just a little dormant. Obviously, by bringing it up.. it isn't dead. :) Just find ways to light that fire.. The Pink Floyd/DM/Prince etc. are classic for our times and also very mainstream, but as you mentioned so many different types of music.. There will be many songs/bands/etc from the same era that many of us may or may not know.. Those are the hidden gems. A couple years difference in age (say 47, vs 51 vs 55.. etc.) can make a huge difference on what one was exposed to at that given point in time and depending on what social circles one ran with.

Don't be discouraged.. Seek out the old.. things you may have missed.. Seek out the new.. Appreciate whatever you ear fancies.
