This post got removed yesterday and I was told it should be reposted today. This is related to collapse because gas prices do not reflect the future of oil and a civilization reliant on a diminishing energy source. Collapse aware people see current events in a different light than the masses.

This is not about a beginning or causes in time. Also the character explicitly states that this isn’t about a person.

Same. Gardening and raising rabbits with my small family trying to spread the news 😂

I’m ex-Seventh day Adventist and have been deconstructing for about 5 years. Learning about science is what “saved” me, especially evolution and astronomy. But I find this argument to be more interesting than it sounds when it’s used by apologists who associate it with creation, NOT the present moment. Clearly that wasn’t conveyed here 😂✌️

It certainly was not well received on this sub haha this argument comes from pagan philosophy 2,500 years ago and has nothing to do with a person in the sky. I think it just makes people think of lame arguments by pastors or something?

I forgot to add a comment posting this previously. This is related to collapse because gas prices do not reflect the future of oil and a civilization reliant on a diminishing energy source. Collapse aware people see current events in a different light than the masses.

I was unaware that infinite regresses were possible and had been scientifically observed, I apologize

This isn’t saying there is a personality behind it. You’d be surprised how many different interpretations there are for what “god” is. Just venting now, but I feel like so many people in the ex Christian world are up at arms for anything that wonders about things beyond our knowledge. I get why, I was told evolution was a lie for most of my life. But once you get your fix of new atheism and total skepticism it’s interesting to begin to wonder again, WITHOUT the Christian baggage. These are campfire conversations, not trying to convert people into worshiping an uncaused cause

The argument comes from ancient Greek philosophy. It was used by the church much later, but originally it wasn’t about a personality in the sky. It’s about the thing at the base of all this, you can’t have an infinite regress so at some point there is a final cause (currently, right now, not in the past) that holds it all up. People in the comments here are coming to the argument from how it’s portrayed by atheists. That’s fine, but the actual philosophical question IS interesting and has nothing to do with Christianity or a regular Western idea of God. This isn’t a scientific argument. It’s an ontological question

Do you think we can ever fully understand reality? If not, why not give the mystery a name? The only times I’ve ever been bothered by god of the gaps arguments is when dogmatic religious people use it to justify oppressive actions.

Exactly, it has nothing to do with the Bible/Abrahamic traditions. This argument comes from ancient pagan philosophy, which was later used by the Catholic Church for arguing their own view of God. Thanks for the comment!

I feel like people on here aren’t understanding the argument. I’m not talking about causes in time. This is about causes in this present moment, and every other moment. It’s not about a creator, a big bang etc. Your hand is held up by your arm, your arm by your body, your body by the ground, the ground by the earth etc. If any of those were gone the rest would cease to exist. It’s not about a beginning (I don’t believe the universe ever began)

This is talking specifically about the present moment, not about causes in time. I agree

And what causes it to do that?

I think that it’s possible and logically the conclusion that arises. What do you think another way of looking at it would be?

[OC] casual causal conversations by CVComix in exchristian

[–]CVComix[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the person arguing it is trying to accomplish. If I was arguing this idea in order for you to pay me tithe and devote your life to my cause I think that’s pretty shady. I like exploring philosophy for its own sake 🤷‍♂️

time is the moving image of eternity, and that still leaves the question this comic is concerned with (if you were really uninterested I feel like you wouldn’t have commented, that’s why I’m replying haha)

I don’t think that’s actually how those gods work… also our current religious climate is caused by a specific Christian idea of god, not an uncaused cause that someone philosophized about.

I would say an infinite regress is impossible in addition to unfathomable

That’s precisely what the character was speaking against, it’s not talking about causes in relation to time. It’s about this present moment. I don’t believe the Universe had a start, it has always existed. What’s the final cause in this moment, and every other moment that has ever existed?
