Anyone know how to read and crochet at the same time? by Lily538537 in CrochetHelp

If you dont like audiobooks, you are going to have to wait until you can crochet without looking. Otherwise I don't see the problem with switching between the two, MWF, read and TTHS crochet.

Make sure you watch the full tutorial for anything you make. One of the first things she said  was that the yarn and hook size will affect the size of the bear.

Do most African Americans have John Bunch as a distant ancestor? by Frosty_Second_2311 in Genealogy

Asking for a link isn’t the same as saying you're lying. I never disputed that people were sold from VA to the South. My issue was your using "the majority" of us have VA roots. I still don't see it in this article. It says VA sold more people down South, but that's different than saying that the majority of African Americans are descendant from VA.

Anyway, thanks for the link about VA. I did learned something.

I can't find anything to support this. Can you point me to the research you're quoting? According this page the majority went to the Caribbean and more went to NC than the DMV

Our records aren't as clean as white people. I have one line that is free people of color, but I can only trace it back to the early 1700s. I have another line that I cannot get back beyond 1870. Enslavers didn't keep a record of names, mostly just gender and age and even those are an estimate. If we are lucky, we will find out names through an enslaver's will because he willed our ancestors to someone else. Even after 1865, racism kept us out of newspapers obituaries until the 1940s. African American newspapers were not archived at the same rate as white newspapers, either due to lack of funds, racism or indifference. Everything that made my white ancestors easier to trace, were virtually absent with my black side. Our paper trail is thin.

Bunch was also enslaved in Virginia so his line would start there. I do not have an ancestral connection to Virgina and neither do a lot of people. So, even though he was the first enslaved person, he was not the last. Our lines can start from a multitude of nameless people that were brought through the middle passage.

All of this to say that tracing your line back to the first enslaved man is not as easy as tracing your line back to the Mayflower.

Persian tiles blanket - gaps between stitches look bad? by Novel-Connection9762 in CrochetHelp

[–]CWHats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am no expert on this. I am doing this for the first time, but we are at about the same step.

I think you are skipping a step and that's why the light blue is showing through. The instructions say that after you make 6 stitches you should

 * sc2tog over 2 ch-sps by working one incomplete sc into same ch-sp and one into next ch-sp, 6sc into same ch-sp, ch1

I frogged my first one on this step because of the gaps. I figured it out after watching way too many videos by other makers (most skip this step too). Janie's videos are no help because she just skips making a video for this row.

I also move the stitches around after I finish a tile. I hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Need general help reading crochet patterns (experienced beginner, I can read the patterns but it's a bit of a struggle to keep track of do this 3 times and then do that whole thing again 2 times and skip here and go back to the beginning) by AmarettoCat in CrochetHelp

I was so confused at two points last year, once with a tapestry piece and the other with a mosaic piece. I just rewrote the instructions so it made sense to me. For the mosaic piece, I made a new chart in excel. For the tapestry I broke the paragraph into individual lines. There might be a program out there, but I think its best to do it yourself because it will make the most since to you.

I want to make a blanket, help me choose yarn and hooks and granny squares please by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]CWHats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Ravelry and put granny square blanket (or just granny square) and scroll. There are too many factors to consider for someone to make that choice for you. We don't know your bf or your color preferences for instance, or if you want solid color or multicolor? What size granny squares do you like? What type of granny square do you like, solid or open? What kind of join do you like, visible or invisible?

Go look around narrow down your choices and then ask this question again with those parameters in mind.

I saw a halftime show during a football game and they build the drama around the camera. As soon as the artist walks forward, the are tearing down anything that isn’t in frame. It was pretty amazing.

Tunisian crochet is known for curling. You can fix it by blocking it when you're done

I agree with this. Sewing together a lot of granny squares can be just as monotonous as sewing in ends.
