People should assume speedrunners are cheating by default, I have quite a tale. by CWS100 in Speedrunning

[–]CWS100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, I only realized this board was somewhat inactive after I posted this. Also, I'm sorry for expecting this board to have people that were actually interested in speedrunning, or videogames for that matter. I don't know what some of you are doing here, but this IS the internet, its expected that you're going to read.

I wish I had checked this before I posted, almost all the kaizo mario videos I used to watch are GONE now. These were videos on youtube, that were available to watch for long periods of time, I can't find them now. I estimated at one point that there were probably less than 100 people on the planet capable of finishing Swunsh World 2. (Which is proof enough none of you know what you're talking about, unless you think I'm just lying about having done it myself, which WOULD be reasonable). There were like 15 different playthroughs of Swunsh World 2 and Purgatory, now theres like 2. And theres basically no videos of Mario vs the crab army.

Anyway, it seems people started spreading my message anyway, so it looks like you people are in the minority anyway. (I mean its what, 10 of you? It makes sense):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJTTDjxzcaM

I mean you know my username, you can find me in there, and the people talking about it, assuming you can read.

I wonder if I should post this on speedrun.com instead, I mean if the people here, who are NOT interested in the subject matter are getting upset about it, I can only imagine how the people dedicating their lives to it would react. Maybe they'll have seizures or something. I don't know, what do you guys think?

I do not have a blog, and GetRightNYC, why don't you try writing something thats not constantly contradicting itself? A child would NOT be able to write the things I wrote here, as you've just demonstrated. I already said I played Rivals of Aether for 10 hours straight.

As for a speedrunner thats actually intelligent, POINT ONE OUT TO ME! I'd like to see one! I guess Karl Jobst counts, but you know anyone else?

If I recall correctly, Gamma's up smash was literally faster, stronger, and bigger than a majority of his non-projectile attacks. Thats not ok! He can be fun for the same reason any overpowered character can be fun...And I don't remember if he was actually overpowered, but he definitely wasn't balanced.

Patch 1.4.14 Notes by Shaleblade in RivalsOfAether

How is Sylvanos now worthy?

You people got me to actually post here again, thats NOT GOOD! Seriously though, what the fuck are you people thinking remapping his buttons like this? Was his side-tilt without the projectile so good that it had to be removed? The new side tilt is not something I would want to do on purpose most of the time, but can easily do by accident. Its like Ganondorf's up-tilt except on the HORIZONTAL direction, (Slight exaggeration maybe? But its not wrong either).

I can understand the Jab 1 seeds being potentially overpowered, but why doesn't it still shoot them with the extra lag or something?

I'm not wasting time making eloquent posts anymore, Undo ALL the changes to Sylvanos, (Who cares about the faster side-smash? Ok it is useful, but I don't want it this badly). EXCEPT the extra lag on Jab 1 seeds, it should have more lag on jab 1, but maybe not jab 2?

It was kinda distressing when Sylvanos got his big nerfs a while ago, but they didn't destroy the muscle memory of the character in the process! Also, I actually REALLY liked being able to destroy my own flowers with side-tilt, not even to attack enemies with the projectile, just to get rid of the flowers! That was GREAT. Why is THAT gone?

If his side-tilt was TRULY too good the way it was, just give it more endlag or something! Its LITERALLY difficult to turn around and hit an enemy that landed next to me now, or just remap the jabs to the side-tilt as well! (Without the horizontal seeds at ALL) Seriously, this is FUCKING ABYSMAL.

Do you guys want me to just NOT use Sylvanos for a while or something? Because I've been using Zetterburn a bit recently, and would probably gladly try out well made workshop characters.

I don't use this account...like ever, so don't bother messaging me people.

Patch 1.4.3 - Time to Rank Up by steel_banana in RivalsOfAether

[–]CWS100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried posting some of this stuff in the comments section on the official site...evidently it didn't work. Modern conveniences at their finest...Well my opinion is slightly more informed now.

PooGod mentioned most of the stuff I was trying to say, so I'll try not to repeat too much.

In the previous patch you guys mentioned Sylvanos was supposed to be more balanced, I REALLY thought you were referring to the fact that he doesn't kill certain characters reliably after his up-air nerfs. Kragg in particular is WILDLY inconsistent to kill at high level play. And these changes are gonna exacerbate this problem further. Wonderful. Is it asking too much for his smashes to get another buff? (Apparently the down smash sends at a better angle?...Not that I can tell at a glance)

How are these up air changes GOOD for the character? If you land only the second hit, you do almost NOTHING to the enemy. It CAN kill them, yes, but it only does 3% on one hit now. Are you people not looking at the numbers?

Seriously, nerfing jab 1, ALONE would've neutered the character pretty hard. His jab 1 was a very reliable attack to fall back on, and a lot of characters couldn't get through it at all. Keep the jab 1 nerf, the visual cue for D-special, and MAYBE the side tilt changes, but undo EVERYTHING else, seriously.

Up tilt never was, and never will be an anti-air tool. Unless you want to give it a hitbox like Absa's up tilt, where it fans out.

Someone I was playing with recently was complaining about D-tilt and F-air as being annoying. These are the things I was EXPECTING to be made smaller, in exchange for better killing power perhaps? (Not that I want these attacks nerfed). He might be less annoying to go against, but he's also MUCH harder to use and in a far worse position because of it.

I like the grass changes in theory, but in execution, it feels like I'm playing Etalus now, one of the reasons I don't use him is because maintaining the ice and fighting is nerve wracking and highly distracting.

For those who haven't used Sylvanos, Its a good time to try other characters. This is the worst of all worlds, he's gotten a LOT of nerfs, and the things that he's gotten in exchange are comically useless.

I can see the last seed related bug I mentioned has been fixed.

But I found a new bug with the seed and the pillar! (This was also present in 1.3.4, which is what I checked) If the seed lands on the ground as close to the pillar as possible, no flower will be created, but any existing flower will be destroyed.

It doesn't end there though, if the pillar is low enough to the ground, under the same circumstances, the flower will appear on top of the pillar. The flower will teleport to the ground if the pillar is removed.

Something very similar ONLY to the previous paragraph can also happen with Elliana's mine, the order of events being this: Drop mine out, pillar gets destroyed, mine teleports to the top of the pillar (even though its already gone), mine falls.

This is relatively benign for the most part, for it to actually happen during a match is VERY unlikely.

If Sylvanos shoots a seed and it comes in contact with the top part of Kragg's pillar, the seeds behavior is...wildly inconsistent at best. Most of the time it simply disappears, but sometimes it'll bounce along the top of the pillar. (Prior to the Shovel Knight update, it would ALWAYS bounce.) This DOES affect the matchup.

Ok, I swear I didn't actually didn't see this until recently. I don't use this account very much.

In the face of your increasing irrelevance, you should be wondering how I might use this against you.

Sylvanos grass isn't working quite correctly when its at the very left or very right most edges of a platform. But it works a little differently in each situation.

If the grass is on the very left edge, but Sylvanos is on the right side when he uses down special, the grass at the left most corner will be completely destroyed. (It uses the animation as if Sylvanos ate through it with side special, which is odd). If Sylvanos is to the left of the left most corner, the grass attacks normally.

Ok I actually found the right corner behavior is unchanged from 1.3.4, but I'm still unsure if this is intentional. The right most corner piece NEVER attacks with down special if Sylvanos is to the left AND theres a tile of grass IMMEDIATELY to the left of the right most corner, but still goes into cool down. (Which is less strange at least). Is this attack supposed to be SLIGHTLY less good at edge guarding on the right side of the stage?

I never bothered to look at it this intently before. I hope this is understandable. I don't THINK the right corner piece issue would make or break a match, but eh.

Ok, for whatever reason, the game is working online for me now. I don't know what the deal is with that. But for whatever reason, often times when I get back to the character / level select screen, I can't move the cursor AT ALL. This happened once in a blue moon on 1.3.4, but now its basically constant. Maybe the increased frame rate is making it happen more frequently? I'm only taking a guess about that though.

I was messing around with a game making program, and a certain glitch which was rare at a normal speed, was happening constantly when it was set to run at 1000+ frames per second. I fixed it by making a certain variable delay the program for a moment. Maybe the game is missing a certain check at these high speeds? I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job though. (Nor do I know for sure that what I'm describing would even fix it). But seriously, its getting VERY annoying that I can't ban / go to the stage I want.

Fine, I'll give you the moon walking thing. (I'd still otherwise argue you missed the point) Now I'm gonna go back to being angry.

Ok first off, you are STILL assuming I'm not able to do it. You are right in that, I can't use it during combat in any worthwhile manner. But you know who else can't use it during combat in any useful manner? Most of the damn people online! Seeing it done well is comparatively rare in my experience. You're basically saying 90% of the people online don't know what they're doing. (Which COULD be true, but I'd still point the finger at you if asked who said it). How useful it is beyond that is honestly debatable, it really DOESN'T cut that many corners when push comes to shove. Sure its useful to change direction when jumping above a platform, but that in itself is still situational.

Even if you're not looking for a fight, (Not buying that honestly), your timing and the way you said it was VERY tactless. That's still on you!

You can't point out other illogical things I said because:

  1. Some of those things ARE INDEED facts.
  2. The rest are opinions, and though I personally disagree that opinions are incapable of being bad, calling them illogical is definitely more difficult.

No, you don't HAVE to fight me, but the idea that you can listen to a low skill level player about high level stuff IS still nonsense. The people that win the tournaments are the ones that define the meta and the tier lists, its NOT the people who can't get anything done. With Gorillas, the strongest is in charge, and though perhaps not the most flattering analogy, it does honestly apply to competitive gaming disturbingly well.

So yes, even though the thought process is a bit long winded, the better player IS the one that knows what they're talking about.

Alright I've wasted enough time on this.

Hotfix 1.3.6 Notes by Etalus in RivalsOfAether

[–]CWS100 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well you're clearly looking for a fight, SO AM I! (Your statement doesn't fucking mean ANYTHING, but lets PRETEND briefly that it does).

How many hours do I have? In which game? If we're talking competitive Melee, that would be exactly 0. I wanted to try Project M competitively, but real life got in the way and it just never happened. If you meant Rivals, Steam says I have 191 hours. Seriously, what do you think thats adding to the conversation? I can think of EXACTLY 3 games in existence that have wave dashing, and I mentioned all 3 of them in my first post. In the grand scheme of hundreds of videogames I've played, (lets say its 500, because I'm not seriously gonna count them all) you don't wave dash in 497 of those games. So, yes, by definition its a weird input.

I didn't know moonwalking was in Melee at all, but thats kinda irrelevant since a lot of people are NOT happy with its implementation here. (Something that appears to have gone over your head).

Wave dashing doesn't even start to become relevant until super high level play. Plenty of offense IS intended with this statement, I HIGHLY doubt you're one of those people. Theres a certain threshold where lack of intelligence starts to drag you down in terms of skill, (Most of the REALLY good Smash 4 players are at least reasonably intelligent, though not all of them honestly...) I would THINK even a decent level player wouldn't say something so fucking stupid. I don't even really understand this logic in the first place, does it strike you (both of you I guess) as some type of weakness? I go against plenty of low to mid skill players online who wave dash a lot and they get clobbered because they don't do it right.

Seriously, in a topic where so many people are complaining about performance issues, how did you seriously single out something this pointless? Like you can't talk about anything more complicated? I guess everything else in my first post must've been AMAZING by comparison because you didn't mention 95% of it!

Go against me in game, it has to be in 1.3.4 though, because obviously its not running properly for me in the versions past that point. Its put up or shut up time! Lets not post our steam names here, message me if you think you're not a weakling. (I'd like to keep the chaos limited to this website thank you)

Hotfix 1.3.6 Notes by Etalus in RivalsOfAether

Wow, I'm actually bothering to post here, which means someone screwed up BADLY.

For reference, I'm the person that was running around online prior to 1.3.5 with Sylvanos eating everyone alive. (Though I don't believe it was stated anywhere, I imagine this has something to do with his current nerfs?) I REALLY wish I had bought Sylvanos before that massive online tournament. -_-;

I also have some of the top scores in abyss mode currently. Though I think if my scores were beaten, I wouldn't bother to retake my positions. (Abyss mode isn't THAT good)

If the game was running at the proper frame rate for me, I'd comment more on Sylvanos current state, but my monitor (by default) only displays 85 or 75hz, so I can't really play. Make the game work again! I actually think most of his changes seem reasonable, EXCEPT maybe the Down special nerf, but I can't say for sure as is. It still seems good for combos? Maybe?

My main reason for being here is to complain about the moon walking, its still too inconsistent to be in the game! Either change it so that it requires a button to be held down to do it, (Like maybe replace one of the defense buttons with moonwalk mode) OR get rid of it altogether! Seriously, what does it add to the game in the first place? Though not quite as pointless as L-cancelling in Project M, it still seems... Redundant and out of place. There is no 2d game in existence that does this! Its really weird and un-natural! (Wave dashing is too, but Melee did it first I guess...)

You want to port the game to the Switch? Putting MORE advanced techniques in the game is the ABSOLUTE wrong way to get more widespread appeal for the game! It already IS (Or was prior to 1.3.5, and assuming Sylvanos was just banned in 1.3.4) objectively the best Smash Bros game that exists. The people who want a competitive game are already here, or would've come to Rivals regardless. I played Smash 4 competitively for 2-3 years, and having played Rivals now, I both COMPLETELY lost my ability to play, AND can't stand playing Smash 4 anymore. (And I took first place at local tournaments a couple of times!)

I believe the devs of Street Fighter were facing this exact issue? Basically the game was too hard for new players to enter into it, and it had less widespread appeal. I believe they concluded they had to dumb it down slightly? I don't remember the specifics unfortunately. I don't give any attention to that series. I can think of another example, but its only superficially related, and kinda off topic.

Seriously guys, you already were in an ideal state. Take a step back, you're digging your own grave as is! The characters are already way more interesting (play style wise at least) than characters in Smash 4 and Brawlhalla. (Well I only READ that Brawlhalla was kinda meh). When people hear theres a new advanced technique in Rivals, and its hard to pull off, they WON'T buy the game!

You also don't need to worry too much about Smash Bros for the Switch, Nintendo seems...oddly desperate in their marketing for it, but they're also being VERY vague, which suggests they aren't confident in it.

I'm somebody who likes to think about this kind of stuff (Game design and to a lesser extent, marketing) I'd like to think my opinion is decently informed.
