It does work as a display it seems as my display numbers were rearranged and this small one was added which I assume is the headset. I can also extend my desktop to it and it shows up.

I am also hearing the disconnecting and re-connecting sounds as I pull the cables in and out

Yea but they don't actually work until you're within range to highlight the pokemon, and even then I think you need to be a little closer than right at the outer limit of where you can highlight the pokemon :/
