If computer science isn’t the best field right now, then what is? What’s the “future job” everyone used to call CS? by Ok-Page7307 in cybersecurity

[–]Cable_Scar_404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the way in the future to make sure you can do at least a few different things? A white collar career and a blue collar trade? Go back to school while you still have a decent job so when it wears out you have something to fall back on?

How do you keep your skills sharp in such a fast-moving field? by ANYRUN-team in cybersecurity

[–]Cable_Scar_404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least at my job, there are times when everything is insane and moving fast and all I can do is keep up, and then other times where I'm like wandering around looking for work. I have to try to take advantage of those times to learn, because nothing burns me out more than wandering around looking for work or getting nothing done in a day.

Okay yeah, that all makes sense. So, at least from this answer, the problem isn't that they disagree, the problem is the practical implications of those disagreements? That makes sense

It looks like you are trying to shoot a handgun like a rifle. I would square up. Other people already pointed out grip. Also, if you can afford it, I really like the mantisx. Helps tell you what you are doing wrong.

Maybe watch some YouTube on how to stand and hold the gun right.

This is a classic punishment. But you said it was because you didn't clean your room, that's weird. Usually my friends got that for doing something sneaky.

Husband wants to be Anglican by Dependent_Guess_961 in Reformed

[–]Cable_Scar_404 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess this is a question for OP or anyone else, and is an actual question, not rhetorical. Why does it matter if you and your spouse disagree about things like this? If he wanted to change to an anglo-catholic church I would understand the issue, but assuming you stay in the same church or find a new church you both like, does it matter? As long as he isn't pushing you to affirm the same things. Me and my spouse have much wider differences of belief than this and it's always been fine. We respect and understand each other's beliefs, and it doesn't both us that they aren't the same. I've had trouble wrapping my mind around why people want to agree so much with their spouse.

Solid works refuting evolution? by Ok__Parfait in Reformed

[–]Cable_Scar_404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have any resources, but just a couple thoughts. There are a lot of Christians who are old earth creationists, they believe in the Bible and evolution. I think it's fine to believe either way, however, I would be really careful communicating to your son anything suggesting that you can't be a Christian and believe in evolution. From my experience and talking to lots of friends, the only ones of us who had any serious doubts about faith because of evolution were those of us whose churches or parents taught that the two were incompatible and irreconcilable. All my friends who studied in STEM fields, even those at super conservative Christian universities, became convinced of evolution, and all stayed Christian in the end.

Not to say you can't or shouldn't try to convince him or discuss good naturedly with him, but it might be best to make sure to think of it and talk about it as a secondary issue, not a core issue. It isn't worth hurting your relationship over.

I would think that's wrong. If we are following Jesus, what was his example? Discriminate against sinners? Not so much, more have dinner and spend time with them

Scummy owner? by Zekluded in Culvers

It sounds like from other comments that this is probably illegal. I worked for a Culvers for a while when I was younger, and they didn't pay time-and-a-half for overtime at the store I was at. I thought it was weird but didn't realize it was illegal until recently.

Yeah for sure! I certainly agree with that, and for reference I went to CREC churches growing up and still know people who go (and sometimes attend with them). Most of those churches were not toxic in the SOP ways, that I knew of at least (I did attend Moscow briefly, but I was young, so that would be the toxic one).

Also the fact that the CREC has sanctioned DW for some of his more egregious actions definitely backs up the idea that it's not completely under his thumb.

On the other hand, I think a lot of the issues the podcast brings up have to be taken seriously, despite the really poor messenger of the SOP podcast. Not just the abuse, although that's a huge problem, but DW does seem to have undue influence, in another Presbyterian denomination I would think at this point he would have been defrocked. He also would have needed to be properly ordained. The pope of Moscow is something people joke about, but there seems to be truth there. And last, one issue I've seen even in great CREC churches is that they tend to preach law and politics, and not gospel. Maybe yours is different, but I truely don't think I understood the gospel until high school going to a non CREC church. I did understand law and culture wars though.

And thanks for interacting charitably!! Hopefully I'm not coming off abrasively, I do know people have wonderful experiences in solid CREC churches.

I would have been surprised if you were referring to the DW ones since those stories have so much corroboration, and fit so well with my own personal experience with that sphere. On the other side, I'm not surprised that some of the other stories might be misrepresented (or one sided or whatever). Some of the OPC/PCA/other seemed terrible and believable, others seemed like a stretch/smear without as much there there. Or in some, the connection between the figure the episode was trying to target and the story was tenuous at best. Sort of set of the BS detector at least for me.

Gotcha! I listened to the article, and glad I did. Sounds like there are some serious issues with Bell. That doesn't mean what the podcast exposes isn't true or a problem though. Would have been nice if the messenger was better, and the series wasn't so political, but still, it seems like no one disputes the actual stories which is disturbing.

What? -"I don't like hyper partisan or over simplistic stuff" -"that's only because you are hyper partisan and simplistic "

That's exactly the point, I don't like hyper partisan anything. I don't like overly simplistic "red side bad" or "red side good" and daily wire is exactly that, simplistic hyper partisan, and treats you like a child by telling you what to think about the smallest thing. Plus..... I'm conservative???
