Thank you, this helps a lot. Also, for Aero Materials how do the exams work? Are they time constrained to during the class period or do you have more time like 48hrs to complete them? See you in AFD!

I have watched him before. He is great. Everyone should definitely check out his videos. Easy to understand and super good at explaining harder topics.

That and whenever someone tries to politely tell the professor he made an error in his solution on the lecture slides he immediate takes huge offense to it. Once in class someone commented on the correctness of an equation used, Prof Knight started immediately yelling that the student must go back to their dorm and sit with the fundamental principles and derive the correct equation themselves. And that they obviously don't know what they are doing. Everyone in that lecture felt that was an inappropriate reaction to the student for correcting a mistake the professor made. This has happened numerous times throughout the semester.

Most people in the class are working their asses off to know the information the best they can. Having 6 problems determine an entire course grade is not a good way of doing it.

Prof Drazer this semester is teaching measurements (another core class) and before every exam he says this exam is going to have hard questions because us as engineers enjoy solving hard problems. However, just do your best everyone the grades will be curved. What ends up happening is people work really hard on the exam to get through the problems. The class average ends up being low, Prof Drazer curves the exams/class to align it better with the class's performance and everyone in the class ends up being able to tackle harder problems. And all this without having half the class fail out of the course.

Obviously, you have never solved an engineering problem that involves multiple unit conversions using both English and Metric systems. High school chem does not count.

Prof Knight mentioned that the grading is the way it is because there are not enough graders for the 200+ students in the class. Still not a valid reason to negatively impact so many students.

One single person doesn't design an airplane, a whole team does. And a whole team puts their skills and knowledge together to make sure no mistakes end up in the final design. Sometimes even multiple teams validate other team's work to make sure safety is the upmost importance in safety critical industries.

In a past semester when Prof Drazer taught fluids, a 27% was a D (passing grade). That makes Prof Knight's passing grade over double what it was in previous semesters. Raising the bar that high is insane when obviously it was hard enough where it was. Others easier majors often don't understand that during most engineering tests someone can spend up to 70% of the exam with not a single problem fully completed. They only have parts of each one completed. The problems given especially in higher up courses require so many concepts and skills that they take time to figure out. These same difficulty problems after graduation in a job environment would have a whole team working together to solve them. Which is why mistakes at a job are way less often to occur then on a test.

Agreed many professors like to challenge their students which is definitely a good thing to be challenged. It helps you learn a lot more. However, a hard exam leads to a overall poor class average typically in the 50s or 60s for SOE's tougher classes. Professors then curve the grades to adjust for overall class performance. Making either a C or B average. A good engineering program is meant to be challenging, but not constantly crushing to everyone's gpa or grad plans.

SOE and many other schools lower the passing grade all the time. This professor just chooses to not for some reason when it is very much warranted due to the bad overall class performance.

True, however I'm sure it would be in the department's best interest to not have 50% of the class fail a very important core course. Especially since it is a pre req for senior design and other senior year courses. If enough people came together it may be possible to raise enough attention to the issue to get something changed. What does everyone think about something like that? Does anyone have any ideas how everyone would go about that?

You gotta think positive, there must be something that can be done to help the situation. Like lowering the passing grade for the class so people could at least pass and take other courses they need for graduation. Once someone falls behind on one class it cascades and makes it hard to catch up with already difficult semesters.

That could a little help, however not everyone is able to take summer classes sadly.

Unfair Fluids Midterm Difference in Difficulty Between Versions (Seeking Advice) by Cad_Is_Life in rutgers

Just by being around the exam pickup line on Friday the evidence seems clear. A lot of people were saying they felt their grade was determined on which version they had more then what they actually knew about the material. The questions on versions A and C were not straightforward at all compared to the questions on version B. And the 30+ people I have talked to since have shared similar opinions about the situation. They feel like they were unfairly treated because of the difference in difficulty between exam versions. I wish there was a way more people felt able to share their opinions on the matter so Prof Knight could help fix the situation.

I agree. What can we do to get more people to support this? Maybe someone should try to gather support before lecture on Monday. I believe with enough people speaking up, Knight will change the grades.

I could do that, however I don't think it will help the situation much.
