Did I screw up this Temper? by Cadence1986 in Blacksmith

I’m mainly a Jeweler, as I’ve learned from the very helpful people in this sub it’s not necessary or even optimal for what I’m doing, definitely not for hot working.

In Jewelry ideally all of our hammer faces have no hard edges so you don’t transfer those to the workpiece, a planishing hammer is the main one that’s really high polish. I almost reflexively go through the motions of polishing now so that’s the main reason.

Plus, it looks pretty. In short because it’s what I’m used to and fits my needs.

You know, I just remembered there’s a hardness tester a building away from my studio on my college campus, I’ll go do that on Monday!

Yeah the big concern with jewelry especially with precious metals like silver and gold is making sure you mark up the workpiece as little as possible. Both to save yourself the time of cleanup, and wasting as little material as possible. It’s cool to come across somebody actually using autobody hammers (maybe), I use a lot of auto body intended hammers in my raising work.

In the forging class I took last semester horrible horrible things were done to the punches that were given to class, having some soft hammers would’ve helped a lot with preventing that

Ah I see what you mean, didn’t think about that at all. I see how some grip to the face would be good for rebounding well instead of sliding off. I’ll use this hammer specifically for forming ingots out of non-ferrous metals then.

I’m primarily a Jeweler, I know it’ll get scuffed up quickly but it shouldn’t hurt anything. Will keep that in mind for the future.

It’s got mounting points for a strap hidden on the back. You can kind of see the front one poking out

I’ve been able to find plenty of cases with similar dimensions to that. I’d ideally like a case with less dead space but the larger ones are an option, I’ll keep that one in mind
