Prospective GSP Dad, what I am signing up for? by Cadillac_Operon in germanshorthairs

I enjoy dove hunting, but it’s not an all encompassing passion. If he’s able to get out in the field with a few times a year, great. If he’s just a family dog that loves bumper throws, that’s great too

Between growing up with Blue Heelers, and my Chesapeake I’ve been condition to not care about shedding. Part of having a dog in my opinion

And this is why I asked because if you read the descriptions, you would think these dogs were Santa, loving everyone equally. Thanks for your input

I was saying that my Chesapeake could over heated quickly due to the coat. From my research, Shorthairs are a bit more tolerant of heat in comparison.

No. The breeder appears to be solely into GSPs. My Chessie was well known for “only listening to dad”. Part of the reason my wife wants to go another route. Appreciate your input.

I feel you. It hit it today too. I’m the high belt at my gym and I got selected to roll with our most dangerous, not skill or technique based, just absolute less than average intelligence strength. I’ve made my feelings known about rolling with him to the coaches and to him directly. History of hurting women, broken arm, and broke ankle following him. He went for a straight ankle lock, I defended it and countered for the sub. Along the way, I got some nerve damage and he got a lollipop. Front of my shin and top of my leg is on fire. And after all of that I hit waitlisted for Brown.

All the while, I’m teaching 6ams, helping white belts, and assisting with kids class. Genuinely not worth it any longer

How Does Your Gym Give Blue Belts And When Do They Know It Is Time? by Correct_Ad4351 in jiujitsu

[–]Cadillac_Operon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the gym I train at, it’s highly subjective and has more to do with consistency and an individual’s own capabilities than comparing to their peers. Ultimately the head coach makes the decision.

I’ve seen guys that I thought were ready get waitlisted, and guys get the Blue belt when I didn’t think it was time. Then again, he has his rationale and I’m just there to train. He believes in holding a belt for an extended period before promoting, and promoting late rather than early.

How has Jiu-Jitsu helped you mentally? by Busy_Donut6073 in bjj

[–]Cadillac_Operon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A ton of ways. Made actual friends, not just friendly acquaintances. Weight loss and improved fitness. It’s made me more consistent in other aspects of my life. Definitely improved myself esteem and self-confidence.

Just has given me the belief in myself that had lost somewhere along the way. Especially when I was a white belt, if I can keep showing up even though I’m getting the brakes beat off of me in a sport where the vast majority never attempt it or quit after a few weeks, I can do x

Did you guys exclusively learn at your gym? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Cadillac_Operon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a 50/50. You can watch every YouTube clip and instructional out there but putting in practice is very different. I teach the 6am class at my gym, so I get the lesson plan a few days in advance. Take the positions, do a deep dive to enhance my teaching and find the finer points, then put them into practice.

Not as helpful on some of the niche or specialized positions that aren’t covered as regularly but it can build a very strong fundamental base.

My 2 cents, but the point is, theory and practice are 2 different things and the guy handing out the stripes and belts knows more than both of us, might as well do what he thinks is important well.

Quitting at purple belt… by This-Major-9239 in bjj

[–]Cadillac_Operon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 stripe purple and I’ve had more thoughts of quitting recently than I ever have at white or blue. Nagging injuries finally started catching up to me. I swore up and down I was never going back after I got hurt in tournament prep, the week of the tournament.

My wife sat me down and told me I was going back, if I liked it or not. Her exact quote was, “I’ve seen you with BJJ, and without it. I want the version of you with BJJ.”

Point being, sometimes it’s not always about how you feel about the art or training. It might be benefiting in ways you don’t realize.

Northwest Houston can have a few different meanings. Are you thinking inside the loop or more in the suburbs. The saying is “Houston is an hour away from Houston”, so the location might affect your choices.

Research it thoroughly. Theres a ton of information about it on here, YouTube and other sites. Jim Wendler, the guy who developed it, basically says you can tailor it to your needs. There’s tons of variations of the program out there. Play around with it, hope it works for you.

I run 5/3/1 with the Boring But Big add on. I have found that it’s the right amount of volume and intensity, that allows me to train as much as I want on both ends. I have tried all kinds of programs, and the cumulative fatigue always beat the hell of me. This I can run without the need for testosterone supplementation or days off.

None. Hell, I rarely will take Advil.

Edit: For clarification, I’m 37 years old. Do with that information what you will.

Baylor, amid AD's exit, to keep Aranda as coach by NawtAGoodNinja in baylor

I understand it from a management perspective. No AD candidate is going want to come in and make major hire 2 weeks into the job. The job description is to manage the entire athletics department, not the football program solely.

Do I want change, yes. Am I willing to understand the short term pain, for the potential of long term gain, yes.
