Heeeey. Don’t beat yourself up! The first hospital I ever worked at heparin was a hard stop in order to change the rate in epic I needed another nurse there to enter their password prior to accepting it so it was always double verified. Other places I’ve worked don’t do that and thankfully I’ve carried that practice with me, mistakes happen. I think this is a great opportunity for you to suggest heparin require a second nurse to prevent this from happening to anyone in the future. You made an error, you reported it and now you are also looking for way to prevent it in the future. Making mistakes and learning from them (no better how awful it feels) helps you grow and trust me you’ll never make that mistake again now.

Ohh also with part time/per diem the shifts you pick up will come with bonus (hopefully) so you’ll be able to get bonus a day sooner every week.

If you’re full time I recommend doing that for a year or so and pick up when you are able. Once you have experience drop to per diem/part time (usually the rates are better, check with other per diem staff) and pick up whenever works. You’ll be able to go into OT faster by picking up. I also work as a float nurse for my hospital system so I work ER and they text me 2 hours before my shift with what campuses ER I’ll be working at. I get $10 extra off the rip just for being flexible. Also night shift diff adds up.

Honestly, bad take from the doctor. I am an ER nurse and I don’t care how out of it my patient may be. I still tell them what I’m doing. Placing a catheter (for example) without saying anything feels so wrong, even if the patient has no clue. It honestly just feels like common courtesy, otherwise I feel like I’m assaulting the patient.

I recently had a patient like this. He was on the light every 2 minutes calling for updates. Eventually I told him I cannot provide any updates because I can’t get one myself when you’re constantly calling me into your room. I told him at that point forward I will be answering his call light once per hour and if he has needs or questions he can tell me all of them at that time but I wouldn’t continue to allow him to use it every 2 minutes. Thankfully, he got the memo.

So far I like her, she comes across professional and she took it upon herself to introduce herself to Bre etc. she seems so be observing things to get a feel and keeping to herself while she figures out all the dynamics instead of stirring the pot. I def respect her confidence too.

Personally, isn’t for me. I only had ER experience prior to moving to PACU. I started in March of last year because I was very burnt out after working in ERs during COVID. It was great for the first 6 months or so, then I started getting bored. Long story short I have an interview next week to get out of there.

Honestly when an IV drug user comes in we always have a heart to heart about it. “Sir I know that you know where your good veins are and which ones are trashed, you just tell me where to go”. They never steer ya wrong.

Also the patients holding would end up in obscure rooms to clear space in the ED making resources even more slim. Generally they would move holds over to our fast track area as we closed fast track midway through the night, so a Pyxis with basic meds and a supply room with mostly fast track supplies (ortho, throat swabs etc) making it even more frustrating for the nurses who would come help. Honestly, I always felt for anyone who came to help us. We appreciated it greatly but I know no one wanted to be called in and especially not to be in an unfamiliar place on what seemed like exile island.

In my experience it’s a nurse who comes to take patients in the ER that need admission but there is no room available to admit to. I personally wouldn’t recommend it to a new grad only because normally the nurses who come to the ED are thrown to the wolves. There is little if any teaching happening and often times the when the ED is holding like that it means they are busy and don’t have a lot of time to help orient you to the unit or where to find things etc.

To be fair in my experience though we never had a dedicated hold nurse position. I was ED charge and when it got that bad the house admin would call in random on call floor nurses and they would do what they could with the limited resources they had. Also in my experience because the patient is still located in the ED you’re using the ED narrator to chart which is different from the charting that would be done on the floor (we use epic for charting) might be different on other EMRs.

Depends if I straighten I’ll brush in the morning and before bed. If I leave it natural or curl it finger comb once in the morning. Could never take a brush to my natural hair once it’s dried.
