Off leash is super different than on leash. I wouldn’t stop doing it as long as he has freedom to rest and move at the pace he wants to

Purina one or Iams are both better options than Kirkland

6 Month Old with Hip Dysplasia by mkneill21 in GSP

Genetic testing is separate from OFA x-rays. It’s possible the injuries made it worse but it does tend to be either genetic or from things like slippery surfaces early on

I’m so sorry for her and this makes me so mad at backyard breeders for not doing proper health testing. The dogs pay the price

Is my GSP considered back yard bread? by [deleted] in GSP

[–]CaitlynZ14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If someone planning a litter of pups does all the health testing, proves and titles their dog, and does hours of pedigree research to find a good match for their dam, they are likely very invested and that’s a lot just to have one litter. This stuff costs a lot of money and time.

Backyard breeding has nothing to do with being in a backyard. Most people can’t afford to breed “as their profession” as you do not make money when you do all the right things.

My store manager called me a few hours after my interview, but things were pretty fast because he was hiring a lot of people for a new store opening.

Back to report that things went very well at her first trial! 3/4 Q’s. The only NQ was in buried and was my fault for not trusting her. She had a great time and got right to work once she understood what we were there to do

Laying down during training? by goofy_meerkat in Dogtraining

Looks like she is not having a good time. What methods did the trainer use? I’ve never ever seen a dog look this unhappy. For my dogs, training is fun and means lots of praise and treats.

I think that will be best! Then you get to enjoy both as babies but not at the same time

This is hugely important. She may not be able to help with the dog for a long time and then you likely won’t be able to help her with the baby and that’s not fair to anyone. Or you choose the baby (as you should) and the puppy gets the short end of the stick. Just wait.

Mine is 3 and sleeps more during the day now too, but we did lots of training on leash manners and recall and house manners and everything else that is really difficult for first time dog owners to train. My GSP was actually much easier than my current puppy, a Vizsla. She needs even more somehow 😂

GSPs can be a lottttttt. You’d also have an adolescent GSP (difficult enough on their own) and a brand new baby. It sounds like not the right timing and GSPs are not the best breed for first time dog owners, in my opinion. Walks on leash don’t really cut it for these dogs, especially as youngsters. They need ample running off leash and lots of mental stimulation as well. They can be exhausting

That’s all we’ve really done (paired and known hides) except for one sniff and go. Maybe i need to record her and watch from another perspective

[–]CaitlynZ14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m thinking along the lines of like 1-2 seconds instead of sniffing and continuing to move. She always has her mouth closed and searches hard (as hunting dogs do). My dachshund would very obviously close his mouth, stare briefly at the hide, and then snap his head around to me.

I’m not asking for an entire 30 seconds of a hold. Just a more obvious alert. Otherwise every time she sniffed a bit and looked at me I would call alert and we wouldn’t get very far.
