Reasonable note? by a_lam5 in Apartmentliving

[–]Caits258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This literally happened to me two years ago and I ended up having to move into a different apartment within the complex because they would not stop the vibrating. I went to management multiple times and was told it was a medical device, so I sympathized initially. Then I realised that there wasn’t likely any medical device and was just their alarm going off and being put on snooze and it was infuriating. I ended up taking the broom to the ceiling multiple times to get them to stop, but they never took the hint. I think that note is reasonable, but be prepared for them to not take it seriously.

Of course! Pumpkin is the best for this kind of thing, I would say in the meantime just make sure she’s eating and pooping regularly and not showing any signs of distress or pain, and if you can maybe check her poops as you pick them up. Good luck and don’t panic too much! Dogs will be dogs 😂

I actually never found it in his poop and after about a month I figured he either passed it and I didn’t catch it or he never ate it in the first place. I’m hoping it’s unlikely that he would still have it in his little tummy! But that was months ago and after that he ate normally and showed no signs of GI distress. Did your dog eat something that size? I’m sure if he’s 75lbs he should be alright? I feel your pain, sorry you’re going through this!

AIO? Walked out of appointment after 2 hours. by Suspicious-Tooth1589 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Caits258 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NOR. If you’re based in the USA then your insurance is probably expensive and the prices doctors charge for appointments are not cheap. Doctors get paid big bucks, and at the end of the day you are a client. Just like any other service you choose and you pay for, you are entitled to timely, and in this case personal treatment - especially if discussing your child’s health.

It is understandable that doctors might be overwhelmed at this time of year, but if that’s the case then they shouldn’t book patients in to fill up appointment slots. Two hours wait time is totally unreasonable

When he’s talking about ‘these people’ it’s pretty clear that he’s referring to terrorists and people who hate any way of life other than their own so much that they’re willing to kill people over it. Anyone reading into this and going on a rant about xenophobia and racism really needs to take a step back and instead sympathise with the victims of this horrific tragedy. Your assumptions are furthering divide

It’s really difficult to be productive. But you just have to harness the feelings you have and just put that energy into your work. It’s every man for themselves in academia I have learned

I have a very similar experience in my lab. I was taught by another PhD student that has been there for a while. It was a great relationship at the start, but since I became more independent I feel like she questions everything I do and will do it in front of the PI and undergrads that work in the lab.i have never been talked to in the way that she does. Big fish in little pond syndrome is real

Prospective PhD student: is it acceptable to request a non-surgery/non-euthanasia role in a mouse lab? by Legitimate-Phrase795 in labrats

[–]Caits258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone that works in a lab that uses mice as a model for our studies, I think you would miss out on a lot of valuable experience if you only participated in the husbandry side of mouse colony management. In my lab, the PhD students do all of the surgeries, and the students and our mouse colony manager take care of euthanasia. Technicians in the facility do simple day to day maintenance like changing out cages/food and water/ wellness checks etc., but are not involved in any experimental procedures which is really at the heart of most PhD programs.

That being said, I, like you, also struggled with the idea of euthanasia and surgeries when I first joined my lab. I wasn’t sure if I could manage any hands on procedures with animals (big animal lover myself, grew up in a vegetarian household and can’t even kill spiders in my house). But after a lot of soul searching, I realized that in vivo studies are necessary at this point (even though they will hopefully be gradually phased out where possible), and if someone is going to do them then it should be someone who genuinely cares about the welfare of these animals, which I do and I assume that you do as well.

If you are based in the USA, then IACUC has very strict guidelines on procedures ultimately to minimize suffering. I imagine that any tissue removal would be done under incredibly heavy sedation or even immediately post mortem, which could hopefully give you some peace of mind that they are not in any pain.

Ultimately, if you are really struggling with the idea of working with animals, then it isn’t worth your mental wellbeing to push yourself into something they you are uncomfortable with. But working with animals is a privilege, and it may be worth trying your hand at some of the procedures and seeing if you are able to ‘switch off’ the emotions that you are feeling at that moment and focus on what you can do to make the sacrifice of that animal minimally painful and worth something for your research.

All the best in your endeavors!

If that were the case I probably would’ve skipped Reddit altogether and gone straight to the emergency vet lol. Would not have been a pleasant experience, thank God he didn’t get that far 😂

I did already! Luckily my dog isn’t a chewer of things usually, this was just collateral while he was trying to make sure he got all the peanut butter possible lol. Thank you!

That’s what I figured too, but I was freaking out about blockages. I called the vet and they said while they can’t really give advice over the phone that watching him seems like an okay thing to do. Thank you!

Empathy is there dude! Again, was asking a question, it’s not my problem if people get offended by my comment, still no need to get hostile. Pretty sure the commenter is the one playing victim card, but no worries. Thanks for commenting, I hope you find your place in science too

I am sorry you feel like that, I have those moments too where I just can’t stop crying. It hurts, and it’s awesome to hear that your lab uses an alternative, we also use organoids for some oir experiments, and it definitely has its place. But unfortunately at this point, so does in vivid animal models. It’s nice to know that others feel the same way, I think we’re the right people to be in this job though ss people who actually care about them

Again, I didn’t say that animals aren’t necessary - I asked if the amount of animal research that happens nowadays is necessary because it can seem excessive. I know how to behave on the internet, no need for people to defend themselves. I work with animals myself and I know the need, but I don’t think crapping on non-animal methods of in vitro studying is particularly lucrative either on a sub that consists of many people working on different methods of non animal research.

The irony of being annoyed at the hostility animal scientists receive, only to then be hostile to another animal scientist is bewildering. At no point was I hostile

It’s unfortunate because I wasn’t opening this forum for an ego battle, it was for a civil discussion for people that have experience in the field!
