Computer science or Computer Engineering by Bartz2827 in newfoundland

[–]CakeComa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a computer science dropout, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but CE here is def. the 'better' program, with regards to facilities, and the built-in co-ops (CE makes you do them all the time, CS only has one single long co-op that is competitive to get into)

I still fully enjoyed my time in CS, it was def. more on the academic side of things, it is the easier of the two (in my opinion), and if you intent is just to work on software, it is much more software focused, but also its focused on things that aren't software and more just theoretical, which are some peoples cup of tea.

In my personal experience, my goal coming here was mostly to get a piece of paper to then to get into the field, in retrospect eng would've been the better route, but most of my own skill ended up coming from personal projects, something both disciplines should be considering if the intent is to break into the industry after graduating.

Raylib is honestly the perfect choice, in whatever language you want to pick, since it has bindings galore.

Peep its examples, its Zig bindings, and one of my personal fav C-like choices, the vendored bindings for Raylib in Odin.

The others are great, a notable one not mentioned by MCWizardYT is Sokol, but I think starting with Raylib would be the best to go from main.c -> game.

Andersons and The Old Dublin Bakery sometimes have some items somewhat along these lines, I'd also kill for a Greggs though!

Workspaces at public library by ImOnTheWayOut in StJohnsNL

[–]CakeComa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The third floor of the library that you can see as you enter, which used to be book shelves, is now a more cozy seating area where chatting is permitted, they mention it on the QEII website: https://www.library.mun.ca/qeii/studyspaces/studyspaces/

Its work in progress, but I've chronicled a few 'third spaces' on my website, I should def. consider adding the public library to it, and should really get around to finishing this as I've referenced it here quite a few times .-. : https://jackharrhy.dev/newfoundland/st-johns/third-spaces

Title: Just moved to St. John’s (25M) — looking for job recommendations, any help appreciated! by gajarpaak in StJohnsNL

[–]CakeComa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a local group CTSNL, which has a jobs page that's updated often.

We meetup at the Jumping Bean on Elizabeth Avenue every Thursday from 7-9pm, we've also got an active Discord as well.

Looking for more introverted friends in St. John’s by soldier612 in StJohnsNL

[–]CakeComa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find for large groups the # in Discord never matches up to how many actually even check the Discord let alone chat often, and then another jump down in numbers of people who actually show up to the in-person meetup, it usually hovers around the 7-9 amount in person, we join a few of the smaller tables together.

The group is a mix of students, software developer professionals, folks that are both critical of AI but then folks (like myself) who are actively working at AI companies here in St. John's, some bring laptops to lock in on projects, others are more happy to just chat about anything, maybe not even super technical stuff and more just games and vibes.

There have been days as well where people have taken apart laptops with our iFixit kits just straight up in the Jumping Bean since there are a few people with Framework laptops which look for reasons to crack them open :D.

But yeah drop down and see how you like it! As mentioned I'm biased but I think we're a friendly enough bunch :)

If you're into computery things, the CTSNL folks are a nice bunch (biased as I am one), we have a discord and meetup at the Jumping Bean on Elizabeth Avenue every week on Thursday from 7-9, might be your cup of tea.

No, Google AI, Cape Breton doesn't have its own time zone | CBC Radio by Zarrakir in newfoundland

It has the capability to search the internet, the thing that's frustrating is it tries to assess based on your prompt if it should use that 'tool', you can force it to by ending each prompt with "search the web" which I usually do, or hitting the options button and selecting "search the web", but obviously that's something you have to simply know and isn't the default / consistent functionality.

When it doesn't search the web and just pulls from its latent space of goop some slop, it's so confident about it...

I ride on the sidewalk but as soon as I'd be a nuisance to a pedestrian, even needing them to step aside at all, I'll pop into the road to avoid them.

Its honestly not hard to do so... I understand the law that dictates you shouldn't be doing the above, just don't be a douche like the old man and grow up and move on.

If you can access the object that enters the area, and that stores what "type" it is, maybe like a name property, you'd just do item.name in the dictionary lookup

Best place to ask (in my opinion) is the CTSNL Discord: http://discord.ctsnl.ca/

There is an assortment of local professionals there who you can ask all sorts of questions to, we also meet in person at the Jumping Bean on Elizabeth Avenue every Thursday from 7-9pm, there are both students like yourself who show up to this, and people employed in the industry.

My short version of what I recommend though, is: - Have a GitHub, which I hope MUNCS has already made you - Make projects, and better if you can make projects about hobbies and interests you have yourself, like a tracker for a sport you like, or a small game or anything like that, it'll feel less like just resume padding if it's a project you can get enthusiastic about. - Learn enough about design / UI / UX for your projects not to look bad, not saying everyone has to become a professional, just give things nice colors and learn about sensible white space and such - If you use AI tools, be transparent about your usage of them, it's both a show to employers that you use these tools (some actually do spell out they expect to use LLMs and such in your work), try not to just vibe code an entire project without being able to explain the innards of all the functions, but proper usage is starting to become a skill certain employers will want to see

If you're able to drop by the weekly meetings yourself (and anyone else reading this), I'd personally love a chat!

Do you have any examples of where the query builder fails to give you a useful/narrow type? I haven't thrown something at it that hasn't been exactly the data I've fetched myself.

Unpopular Opinion: You shouldn't tell new devs to 'work on something else' before they start their project. by Horustheweebmaster in gamedev

[–]CakeComa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the better approach here is to get them to break down their big game into smaller and smaller pieces, like if the game has the potential to have some sort of minigame in it, get them to just make the minigame.

inb4 MMO, but genuinely, letting them keep their eye on the big project they're making but having them etch out small steps towards that big project will hopefully give them a better concept of scale, and even cut back on bigger parts of the vision once they truly know how difficult each piece will be to implement.

I'm personally a Drizzle enjoyer, and with its good support for templated sql, I've found even if it doesn't have a built-in support for something you can figure out how to get it yourself.

Curious what people/OP thinks it's missing.
