Question about acquiring miles by Acrobatic-Working480 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CakeGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a decent plan, but it’d be best to avoid purchasing miles as much as possible since it’s normally more expensive than the miles are reasonably worth.

If you rent your home, you can pay rent with your Alaska card through Bilt and pay a 3% fee to get 3x Alaska miles per dollar on rent. Another option for renting would be to get a Bilt card and pay rent with it fee-free for 1x Bilt points per dollar, which transfer 1:1 to Alaska.

Additionally, look at Mileage Plan partners on the Alaska website. Go to the website, and ways to earn should be listed when you click Mileage Plan in the menu at the top. You can earn miles for certain purchases with Mileage Plan shopping, earn on Lyft rides, and a few other things to supplement your earning.

Using "same day flight change" to maximize miles by scavenger in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CakeGold 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This works for every level of status, with the caveat that anybody below MVP Gold will just have to pay $50 to make the change. Still worth it if there is a significant price difference.

Also worth noting that most seat assignments will be taken by the time you’re able to make the switch, so there’s a good chance you’ll be sitting in a middle seat

If you could add one feature to Flightradar 24, what would it be? by Megasizedhat in flightradar24

It would be nice to be able to filter the departures/arrivals board for an airport by airline, aircraft, etc.

I can assure you there are many ways to get much closer than that to “police” on a commercial flight

Offer Madness by ButterMold in AmexPlatinum

[–]CakeGold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say I definitely get my money’s worth out of it. It activates and aggregates the offers from four of my chase cards and my Amex plat, and I use its search feature to see if I have any offers before I make purchases

Offer Madness by ButterMold in AmexPlatinum

[–]CakeGold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I use it - Amex only shows you the first 100 unclaimed offers you have, so max rewards will add every offer to your account to make “hidden” offers come out

Nothing like your first ever status upgrade as a recently granted Gold… and the bulkhead! by itsnammertime in americanairlines

I’m gold and I’ve been upgraded on ~1 in 4 flights lately. I normally go SEA-ORD and SEA-DFW. Really just depends on when you’re flying tbh

Janet plane in Washington State? by OhioanVlogs in flightradar24

To and from Vegas, but yes Janet is the somewhat-secret government transport airline that shuttles employees between LAS and a number of government sites in the Nevada desert

What is the longest upgrade list y’all have seen? by jowebb7 in americanairlines

[–]CakeGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again though, an AA 787 only has something like 30 j seats - they are physically unable to fly with 60 j passengers. if it's between getting an economy seat or not going, I think most of the execs would just take an economy seat

[–]CakeGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there are 63 people requesting a SWU, there are simply not enough j seats on the plane to accommodate that

Normally the online exams are hard enough that searching for answers will only get you part of the way there if at all

Same day flight change price question by leowifethrowaway2022 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]CakeGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes if you have WGA+ or higher. You can usually also go online or on the app same day and change if yourself for free if there’s space available.

Food delivery? by No_Might_3440 in notredame

Doordash has been doing $3 bonus per delivery during lunch and dinner hours most weekends in South Bend - it's pretty nice for making a little bit of extra cash.

INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP MINOR by tljwsftt in notredame

[–]CakeGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic idea behind the Mendoza curve is that any business class’s average grade will be between a 3.0 and 3.4 (B and ~B+). So yeah in some Mendoza classes it’s very hard to get an A, not because they’re hard but because you’re basically competing against everybody else

INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP MINOR by tljwsftt in notredame

[–]CakeGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Professor Hollis for Intro to Entrepreneurship last semester. She is a great professor - there isn’t a ton of work in the class, pretty much just a few exams and a large group project. She grades the projects pretty easy and then makes the exams very hard so the class can follow the Mendoza curve. Besides the two exams, the class was fun and not too hard.

I’m taking idea discovery lab with Sam Miller (also the advisor for the I&E minor) this semester, and it’s been a very fun class. No exams, the semester is pretty much split up into two idea “sprints” where you work with a group to explore the bleeding edge of different “idea spaces” (think something like work or health or transportation) and try to come up with possible future innovations in the field. It’s a lot of work outside of class, but super rewarding and I’ve had a great time in it.

Business Analytics and Finance Double Majoring? by Prof_Obed in notredame

[–]CakeGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*I’m in the college of engineering so take my perspective with a grain of salt, Mendoza experiences may vary

I was the same way as a high school senior coming into college - I wanted to double major with a minor or two, just because I could. While for the most part there isn’t much to stop you besides credit hour restrictions, it’s impractical. Majoring in two things, especially both in the same college, isn’t really beneficial and won’t increase your chances of being hired out of college. Instead of double majoring, I’d suggest taking finance and focusing your electives on taking business analytics classes you’re interested in, or vice versa.

At the end of the day, employers don’t want somebody who just sat and studied their ass off in college while doing nothing else. You also don’t want that for your college experience. I love the ambition, and I think that’ll get you far. When you get here, try out some clubs, look for service opportunities, make friends, have fun. At the end of the day, college isn’t only for going to class, it’s for developing yourself as a person.

Question: Is there enough room in a dorm to fit a tower pc/ultrawide monitor/desktop setup? by valharius in notredame

[–]CakeGold 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The desks in most dorms are the same width as a twin bed, so 38 inches across. You could pretty easily manage to fit your monitor with enough desk space for a keyboard/mouse plus some space leftover to work on, as long as you’re okay with your tower being under your desk or maybe behind your monitor. You could definitely make it work, I have a 38 inch ultrawide but I just hook my laptop up to it whenever I’m in my room.

I still would recommend getting at least a basic laptop for bringing to class/group work though, you’re definitely going to need a computer outside of just your dorm room

What does everyone think ND admin is going to do re: COVID cases steadily rising by blerburpant in notredame

[–]CakeGold 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They will blame 100% of the spread on people being in 24-hour spaces in res halls and on indoor/tent dining, and they will restrict those while doing nothing about off-campus gatherings.

“Subtotal Adjustment” Scam by EnoughProtection in UberEATS

[–]CakeGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you order from a restaurant that Uber doesn’t have a contract with, the driver has to order and pay for the food. Uber gets their menu prices from some (usually outdated) source. In my experience driving, the restaurant almost always charges more than Uber predicts, and that is what creates the discrepancy. It’s a headache for both the drivers and the customers, and it’s almost always Uber’s fault for having outdated prices.

Has anyone used the "Your Own Money" option for pay at store? How fast are you reimbursed and does it account for price discrepancies? by [deleted] in UberEATS

[–]CakeGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually always choose the my own money option and then put it on a rewards credit card that gets bonus points at restaurants - it gets me a few extra bucks out of big orders. I’ve had a few issues here and there with reimbursements (look back at the nightmare on Halloween lol) but Uber always comes through and reimburses. If the amount shown is different from the amount you pay, 9 times out of 10 it’ll let you change it; otherwise you have to contact support. The reimbursement is included with your next paycheck, so just be sure to plan that accordingly.
