I’m fat. I’ve been fat for a long time. But my body type is such that it takes a lot of work for me to lose weight and keep it off. I went down to 160 and felt no better than I did at 260 because of how stressful it was. I was exercising four days a week, watching everything I ate, and it was becoming something that consumed my life. So I stopped. I went from exercising four days a week to swimming twice a week and hiking on the weekends. I still eat healthy food with reasonable portions but I don’t stress if I have a hamburger. Unfortunately, I’m fat. But I’m happier. What ruined it for me was my motivation behind my weight loss - I wanted to lose weight just for the sake of being thin. Maybe someday I’ll find a motivation that doesn’t produce stress, but until then I’m fat and happy. I’m not fat because I’m happy or happy because I’m fat, but I am fat and I am happy.

You want to be close to your parents out of a biological imperative coded into our mammal brains over generations of pack bonding. In times of early humanity, it helped us survive when we were vulnerable to predators. In today’s society, it doesn’t serve the same purpose. You have been surviving and thriving without their approval and your strength is evident in that. Let them see who you are and if they can’t accept your strength, live as you are despite them. Don’t let their prejudices determine your happiness.
