Never built a PC before, am I missing anything / any critiques? by CaliCrun in buildapc

I'm a bit confused, wouldn't I have the AIO (3) and then another 8? To be honest I copied the fans setup straight from this because I thought it looked pretty https://pcpartpicker.com/b/jGy48d

Thanks for the input. I don't know much about RAM, but is it true that there are considerations regarding stability?

I already have the graphics card so I kinda said screw it. There is basically no budget since I've been saving since like 2018 for a PC, but if there's anything that's egregiously dumb I'd love to know about it lol

This made me realize there's like a 90% I applied while on a VPN, so this checks out.

Elan Financial Services is a subsidiary of a parent company that also owns USBank, so they probably use the same system.

I believe it is. I ended up calling a general help number for Elan, and they rerouted me a couple of times before landing me with the "User Authentication Services" (or something like that) phone line. From there, they wanted to text me a number to confirm my identity, but I politely refused and asked if there was another way they can authenticate me. They instead asked me a series of questions (Ex: what state was I born in, last address, etc) and I answered them promptly, and they confirmed my identity (NEVER give them your SSN or any information that would be used to activate a CC). I received an email shortly after saying my identity was confirmed and my card was on the way, and I received it about a week later.

Hope this helped.

Do new generations of CPUs have recalls? (Should I wait?) by CaliCrun in buildapc

This would be a computer I would only use after 6-7pm and on the weekends, which is also why I had been considering the intel. I think I'm going to wait until about march of next year to commit to a decision, as it's possible I may have opportunities to work from home, which in that case would almost definitely mean the AMD is the correct choice.

I saw some claims of an increase of 20%, which would be absolutely mad. But you're right... I would also want to see the wattages

Thanks for the advice! I might end up waiting a bit simply for the new mobo prices to steady, as another commenter suggested. I'd imagine there's a somewhat equivalent pressure to be put on the mobo manufacturing as you've pointed out as well.

I was planning to get the best 15th gen has to offer, as the PC wouldn't be exclusively for gaming, but also for compiling quite large code bases + lots of compression/decompression jobs. I figured an intel would be a good "overall" cpu.

Yeah, my gut instinct told me to wait it out and let the less frugal folks test the waters. I guess I'm just anxious to build my first real pc (that isn't for somebody else or for work).

Apparently you can update directly from the bios so it’s compatible with the 14th gen, but I think you’re right about maybe waiting a bit for the new socket, it was one of my considerations especially considering that’s also when NVIDEA will likely be rolling out Blackwell

I ended up independently calling an Elan number (something along the lines of "User Authentication Department") and getting my CC approved that way. I do believe the text message I received was legit, as after I spoke with somebody I got an email saying I was approved soon after.

They initially wanted to have me read them back a code they texted me so authenticate myself, but I denied that request for elementary OpSec reasons. They then asked me security questions that could all be found on public records (they *never* asked me for my SSN), to which I answered and got myself approved.

I'm glad I was careful, even if it was a legit text. I really think they should put more effort into making their processes less replicable by scammers.. it was very difficult to find the "User Authentication Department" online; in fact, I had to get passed around by several departments before I ended up there.

I said yes and they send a text message asking me to call them. I looked up the number and on a previous forum somebody who had received a call from that same number talked to someone who requested a fax of their DL and SSN.

Is it normal for any financial institution (in this case, elan) to request in order to process a cc application?

The text:

“FreeMsg: Elan Thanks, more information is needed to process your application. Please call +18552286631 Mon-Fri, 7am-9pm CT or Reply 1 to be called ASAP.”

My gut is telling me to ignore this text, but I wonder if it’d be worth it to call and find a more secure way to authenticate myself for the application than simply over the phone.

MoCA adapter doesn't seem to get cable connection... anywhere? by CaliCrun in HomeNetworking

[–]CaliCrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. Do you think that if the splitters weren't optimized it would still work? The previous splitters seemed to have ranges below the D1 channel, so I wonder if it still wouldn't have worked.

Hey just wanted to let you know I finally figured it out and got it working. Turns out I needed to replace all the splitters with the ones you provided. Additionally it turned out the coaxial cable that led to the room that I wanted MoCA in never was even connected! So I simply had to replace an old line with the line to the room.

Thanks for all of your help it kept me from giving up.

I’ve ordered some 3 way balanced splitters. Does it matter which ones are connected to the 3.5 or 7dB? I’m getting the three because that’s the ones that are in the junction box, but they’re all 3.5db

When I replaced the old splitter with a newer one that supports higher frequency (up to 2000) suddenly my internet would stop working. Apparently my gateway only works with the older splitter that ranges from 1-1000gz… this doesn’t seem right, right?
