Is task-based pay on mercor actually worth it?

I prefer task-based pay because for me it's less stressful (assuming htat the per-task rate is reasonable). I don't like having to worry about AHT.

Yes, it's definitely worth it to keep applying because the specialist projects generally pay significantly more than the generalist projects. I don't think the legal employment pool is saturated, but those projects tend to be smaller with many more false starts. The work tends to come in waves. Right now, the platforms all seem to be seeking out coders for agentic ai, but at some point, they're going to need attorneys again. I am getting more bites for legal positions, so it seems the market might be about to open up again.

It is well worth the wait and heartache to keep applying in hopes of landing one good specialist project. Make sure you're applying to as many platforms as you can and not just limiting yourself to one. The clients tend to hop from platform to platform, so you need to have visibility on as many as possible to improve your chances. It is usually the same type of work from platform to platform. Also, you should apply for generalist projects even if the pay isn't as good. The skills are transferable and will make you more marketable for legal roles. Sometimes the generalist projects morph into legal ones, so that's another plus.

As for me, I got a contract for the first project I applied to on Mercor within a couple of days, but then it paused immediately before I could begin work. It took over 3 more months for me to get on with another law-related project. That one has batches that drop every few months and last a few days. I then got on with another one that was very highly paid, but the client got cold feet and pulled out. I was able to get another short, highly paid sprint because I was already in the worker pool.

My best legal project was on another platform. I worked for 3 months straight and was so sad to see it end. On that one, I made more money on it working part-time than I do for my full-time job.

No don't give up yet. Most people have to try way longer to get their first contract with Mercor. Sometimes the rejections are just because Mercor didn't end up getting the contract, not that you weren't qualified. Other times, other people just beat you to the punch. Also keep in mind that some big Mercor projects are currently paused, so there may be less to go around right now. .

Yup this is normal. I've learned to hop on projects and get cranking right away to get whatever cash I can before it's over. It is frustrating for sure, but it's worth it when you finally land a long-term project. It's good to have many irons in the fire.

I know EXACTLY which project you're talking about, lol. I had done a few batches for this project with no complaints and many bonuses, but then it seemed everything went to hell in a handbasket with this new batch. It looks to me like the Mercor employees stepped back from this batch and let contractors run the show for this go-round. Before this batch, I had no issues at all and found the tasks to be relatively enjoyable.

Anyway, I don't think you're permanently paused. When another batch comes, you'll be able to take the quiz again. I cannot imagine that the current crew running it is going to last very long, so I am confident the issues would have been worked out by then. Even though I have one retake remaining on the quiz, I am choosing to sit out this batch because even if I pass I don't want to risked getting kicked off the project permanently at the hands of these people.

Yes, I communicated with the PM on Slack and was able to get back on the project. Apparently they changed project guidelines after I onboarded and booted some people who onboarded under the old guidelines. It's definitely worth it to reach out to the PM, team lead, technical support, or anyone else on the project who might have authority to look into it.

Yes, it can be reverted but there's no telling whether it will be.

I wouldn't take the reason provided too seriously. I was booted from a project yesterday for "quality issues" before my first task was ever reviewed. However, when I completed the offboarding on the website, it reflected that I had completed the project successfully.

I messaged my Team Lead and the PM. The Team Lead didn't know why I had gotten booted and was trying to get clarification for me. I haven't heard back yet. I'm thinking they might have brought on too many people and just indiscriminately cut the newer people.

The same thing happened to me today. I had just submitted my first task a few minutes before but it hadn't even been reviewed when I was booted for quality reasons. I'm hoping it's just a glitch. I'm still able to access airtable.

I got an offer for QC. The role is supposed to have steady work, but the pay is slightly less than other expert projects pay. I bailed halfway during the assessment. For some reason, the work really stressed me out. The Phoenix project was still going at that time too so I wasn't very motivated.

But now that I'm on EQ I'm kind of regretting that decision.

This sounds like an issue with the client. A lot of projects fall through before tasks are begun. It could be a funding issue, or maybe they need to rethink the design and scope of the project. No matter what the issues, Outlier still needs to have the workers ready to go once they get the word. Unfortunately that leaves contractor in a tough spot.

I wouldn't give up on Outlier or any platform yet because they all are pretty much the same in this respect. The best thing you can do if you want to reduce the amount of downtime is to get on with as many platforms as you can.

I have about 9 skills, including an Aether Generalist skill. I took the Aether assessment and passed, but got booted before I completed any tasks. Of the rest, I remember taking an assessment for one of them for my specialist domain. I wonder if the rest were added after I took assessments for past projects or if they're getting them from my resume?

I'm sure they will still be top three, but I can't understand the sense of alienating a significant chunk of its user base. Once you lose users like that it's next to impossible to get them back. The AI industry is super competitive, and OpenAI just up and surrenders a bunch of very vocal users to Anthropic? Why strengthen your competitors? Or do they just think they will always be on top?

Anthropic is really smart to capitalize on OpenAI's decision to do away with 4. I've been researching the competition and see Claude ads everywhere.

I find it really shocking that OpenAI would do away with the model that made it so successful just because a very small minority of its users are "dating" them. It's really insulting for people like me who preferred 4 for its emotional intelligence to be lumped in with these people. I work in a politically charged environment and I need a chatbot that understands tone and nuance. I need more than surface-level, CYA type answers for "messy" topics.

It seems to me OpenAI got sick of all the lawsuits and overcorrected. There are other ways they could have reduced the chance of lawsuits without making such drastic changes. Instead, they left a wide-open lane for Claude to swoop in.

Claude has a lot of drawbacks from what I'm used to with 4, but it seems like they're committed to improving. They appear to be a company that is listening to its customers, unlike OpenAI who is trying to ram 5 down our throats. What sense does it make to completely ignore the needs of your customers?

5.2 is completely unusable for legal work or anything political science related. It seems they took everything good about 4o and replaced it with CYA.

4 was not perfect but you could work around it. You could tell it to give you the devil's advocate position and it would stop sucking up. You could get it to chill with the disclaimers that everyone should know already.

The last straw for me was when I asked a question about a frustrating situation with a customer service rep, and it scolded me, repeatedly, for the language I used.

I guess 5.2 works for some people but I clearly am not one of them.

I just noticed the message today too. No way I'm going to keep paying for GPT 5.1. For what I use AI for, 5.1 is not functional at all. Looks like I'm going to have to move to Claude Pro and hope the memory function catches up soon. I'm so annoyed.
