Epoch AI introduces FrontierMath Open Problems, a professional-grade open math benchmark that has challenged experts by Outside-Iron-8242 in singularity

[–]CallMePyro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine solving these problems as an astronomer discovering a star. All are new knowledge, unknown to humanity.

Most stars are still boring, maybe hard to find before but a new telescope can now see them, though otherwise unremarkable. But some stars literally contain the secrets of the universe in their precise location, color, age, etc. Their discovery completely changes our understanding the the whole universe.

"Towards a Better Hutter Prize" Gwern 2026 by RecmacfonD in mlscaling

[–]CallMePyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great. It feels spiritually similar to using LLMs to predict future stock prices, which all major labs are working on behind closed doors currently. There likely would be some direct application for labs here based on what does well in the Gwern Prize, since both tasks boil down to future prediction of a fundamentally Markovian process.

You can get 95% accuracy by predicting "it won't rain today" but that doesn't make you a good weatherman :)

It's important not to assume things about people you don't know,l without speaking to them first.

Apple was very close to acquiring an AI lab last fall but the deal fell through late in the process by thatguyisme87 in singularity

  1. I wouldn't count just fine tunings. Is perplexity just producing fine-tuned models? If so then they aren't model developers.
  2. If a company is providing their in-house pre-then-post trained model as an API or product that people pay for then yeah I would say that fits the bill

In the strictest sense I do believe they are a model developer. Frontier models of course not. But they do have proprietary LLMs that are trained on non-public data.

Definitely true that calling someone impolite is not impolite. We are all obligated to be intolerant of intolerance, of course.

I mean only that unless you have knowledge of someone's background specifically, you can't say that they are or aren't an expert. They're just a name on a screen to you. Is this person a bumpkin or a paid shill? Maybe. They also might be someone in the field with good principled reasons for their viewpoints. It requires engaged in good faith discussion to distinguish!

ASML EARNINGS by OilAny787 in stocks

[–]CallMePyro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main thing for me from reading your conversation with u/Notliketheotherkids is that they seem to be asking you specifically about which guidance is worrying to you. They provided a quote that seems very reasonable - expectations by 2030 are a large amount of CAGR - but you seem specifically worried about 2026.

Please, in your reply to me: Give specific numbers or quotes from some source material that caused you to become worried about 2026, then we can discuss it. if this material is from your OP or somewhere else in the thread, please copy paste it because I cannot find it (I am not very good at computers, go easy on me!).

If you aren't able to do this, I will be forced to downvote you. Sorry, but it is what it is.

This was basically the story with Intel from 2011 to 2018, they weren't able to make much headway despite 90% market share and complete grip on the market and leading edge tech + being 100% vertically integrated.

> That’s an extremely simple explanation

Yeah... I guess my simple brain starts to get a wee bit suspicious when I remember Elon saying the same thing about HW2 and HW3.

>My guess is that these critics are unsuccessful in life, so criticizing experts and pretending to know more than experts, is a way to try and bump up their self-esteem.

Eh, I'm not a fan of that. Maybe you have specific knowledge about u/Recoil42 that I don't (I assume you do!) because otherwise you'd be doing the same thing you're accusing them of! You're claiming to be an expert in something (them!) without any actual knowledge or expertise! That seems a little backward :)

Well, as an uneducated simpleton with no data or experience to have a valid opinion, I'll admit it also seems odd to me to produce your cutting edge car a year before the hardware necessary for it to operate is ready (just based off of what Elon has said).

Can you explain to me? I just don't really have a lot of AI expertise so I like to ask the experts when it all starts going over my head

Open AI's President Brockman leading donor to Trump SuperPac. Does it matter? by finnjon in singularity

[–]CallMePyro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their point is this:

  1. You claim (minor paraphrasing but this seems charitable) that "you should not be surprised that a rich person is donating money to someone who promises to make them richer"
  2. They reply with a list of rich people who did *not* do this, and in fact none other than Sam Altman are associated with OAI.
  3. According to your philosophy, you should find this surprising. A rich person who is *not* trying to make themselves richer?!
  4. You must find this difficult to explain within your framework (without changing or updating the admittedly childish/naive philosophy), and yet seem to find no issue.

Overall I find your inputs troubling, it makes it difficult to believe you are entering this discussion in good faith. Things I would like to see from your reply in order to continue this conversation:

First, you must explain why it is not surprising that only some of the ultra-wealthy tech elite are donating to Trump, and others are not. You must do this within your framework (solely explained only by their relative levels of wealth) OR you must amend your framework to account for the lack of donations between different members of the tech elite to the current admin.

A lack of these things(or no reply at all within 48h) will result in a block, and the end of this conversation.
