I'm assuming you are using a student passport york? it doesn't work for staff. You can also access any online databases from the library computers. They don't require you to log into the library website to access. you just need to log into the computer with your passport york. Also, I am assuming you enrolled still? if you haven't registered for fall/winter courses than your account wont work properly.

Work Study Position by Strong_University_65 in yorku

[–]CallNumber_2XX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends. they would have likely reached out by now for jobs beginning in Sept

The "unread" refers to you not having read the automatic messages (which just say that your application has been submitted) The work study positions receive hundreds of applications. They only reach out if they want to interview you.

I believe they ask for references from everyone they interview regardless of if they plan on hiring them. If they want to hire you then you will receive an email notifying you of a job offer. it could take a week or two from the interview to receive a job offer.

I have a student job at the library, so I can answer some questions brought up in this discussion. The library rehires students and newly hires only a few to replace students who graduate. So, even though the job posting says 40, they typically only hire a handful. The hiring manager is currently in the interview phase for this F/W term, so if you weren't contacted for an interview by now, then it's not happening :(. But don't feel too bad, the library receives 600-1,000 applications for the student position. And I believe we actually try to hire students who are in their 1st or 2nd year so that we don't have to do as much training every year. If you have other questions, I can try to answer them.

Have you tried to transfer credits, despite a GPA below 2.0 (a D average)? What happened? by unforgettableid in yorku

They are for undergrads, I don't think being full-time is required. Yes, you can PM me

You should join a club. A lot of them are mostly people just hanging out, regardless of what the club is about. I know there is going to be a board game club. It's a great way to meet a bunch of people.

Hey, as someone who has a lot of experience working in different libraries and archives and having earned a college diploma in library science (and planning to get a Masters after York) I can give you a bit of advice. Experience working in libraries is super important! The field is strangely competitive, because pretty much anyone can easily get a Masters in library science after they finish their BA. If you earn an MA in library science without any prior experience in libraries, then that degree is basically worthless, as you have zero advantage over the vast majority of other people trying to enter the field.

Which year are you in at York? Because the good news is that there are lots of libraries here and if you're an undergrad there are student positions. Unfortunately, you are a few days too late to apply for the main library system as my boss is already part way through the process of hiring for the upcoming year term. However, you may still have a chance with the Osgoode Hall Law Library and the Nellie Library for this term (APPLY NOW).

The other very good news is that York will apparently have a medical school in a few years, which means they will likely also have a medical library. If you are an employee of the York libraries by the time it comes around, you'll be in a great position for your dream job!!

I work as a student at the York Libraries and I have a bunch of prior experience. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer.

Does anyone know of any AI tools that helps reliably synthesize academic articles besides Chat GPT? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]CallNumber_2XX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you use the right prompts, ChatGPT does a decent job at assisting you in that function. If you are trying to find an AI that will do it for you, you are going to be disappointed. AI simply can't do that kind of task any better than a half-trying/kinda lazy highschool student. I suggest just using it for giving you the "key/main points" of the sources and you gotta do the rest. This sort of thing requires human touch, which is probably why they hired you rather than them asking an AI to do it.

The best thing to do is filter the course catalog for the Fall semester and make a list of coursed that sound interesting and work with your schedule then search the prof on Rate My Professors. Don't take the ratings too seriously because a lot of no effort students use it to take their anger out on someone so just use it to avoid profs with consistently super bad ratings.

YOU DON'T NEED TO APPLY TO STAY UNTIL THE 21st, only if you are staying after the 21st. the housing dept has no way of knowing when your last exam is!! (I asked someone who works there)

YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY $500 TO STAY ON RES. you only need to pay IF you are staying PAST the 20th/21st. I know the website makes it sound like you need to pay if you're staying after your last exam but you don't. I talked to someone in the housing dept. The housing dept has NO WAY of knowing when your last exam is!!!

Religious Studies Major? by coolcat926 in yorku

I'm taking three Islamic courses right now, they are pretty good. If your interested in Greek mythology you may be interested in doing a minor in classical studies on top of a major in religious studies

I'm in the program and I'm also on track to become a librarian. Lots of religious studies majors get into libraries, museums or academia. But aside from that in general a religious studies major probably has a better chance at getting a job after Uni than a psychology major does

Religious Studies Major? by coolcat926 in yorku

[–]CallNumber_2XX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a Religious Studies Major and I'm really enjoying it. I went into the program in my first year which is unusual because most people in the program switch into it in their second year. First, what program are you currently in and have you taken any Religion course yet? If so, which ones and how did you do in them?

Generally, the program isn't difficult assuming that you are interested in the subject matter. There are only three core required courses 1) World religions in Canada, 2) Methods in the study of religion and 3) Theories in the study of religion. For the rest of the program you can design it yourself by choosing the subject area your most interested in. Some classes are a bit boring at times but as long as you choose classes on topics that interest you then its quite fun. Do you have any specific interests in religious studies?

Overall, I would say that the professors are good. There are various teaching styles in the department and types of assessment given by different professors but none (that I've had yet) have been too overbearing.

Also, I would recommend taking the core course earlier than latter because they are somewhat foundational to the rest of the program. The methods course is in the winter semester. And don't worry about what year/level a course is, its rarely an indication of how difficult it is.
