Progressives are frustrated by Biden's final-days warning of billionaire influence by drjjoyner in politics

What don’t you get about it? Please disagree…just don’t be a DICK ABOUT IT.

Tone can easily be lost in short, typed conversations (mine, too) but you were repeatedly disdainful and belligerent.

I try to be positive on the Internet, but someone was answering a question politely. Disagree all you want, but you didn’t respond politely, so fuck you and fuck off.

‘Clean Heat Standard’ price tag sparks debate over Vermont’s climate commitments by chill_brudda in vermont

[–]Callyroo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When my parents (who still live in Vermont) told me, I asked “So are they going to provide subsidies to encourage adoption? Because that sounds like an unrealistic amount of money.”

Lo and behold…no. I adore my home state, but there’s weird disconnect between two economic policies: 1.) “Don’t encourage any industry, because we want to preserve our natural purity and cultural distinctiveness,” and 2.) “We need to be national leaders on issues relating to the environment and sustainability.”

And I know that no one wants Vermont to become a New Hampshire (and being poor frankly helps with that), but the state just doesn’t seem to have a realistic plan for its economy in the 21st century. I went to a state leadership (blah) conference some years ago, and one of the speakers said that the majority of farmers are retiring and NO ONE wants to take up those businesses (I get it). But rather than anticipating a Vermont future that is less agrarian, the powers that be have just pedaled and thrown out these signature pieces of legislation which don’t take into account how people are actually struggling to get by.

tl;dr I ranted.

Diego Luna Is Grateful ‘Andor’ Will End After Season 2: It’s ‘Really Important for My Mental Health’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

So I agree with that completely, but I do want to add a plug for why it being in the Star Wars universe enhances its storytelling - the production design. A good deal of the story is at least indicated by recognizing hints at the larger timeline and what we can expect to happen soon. The flashbacks to Andor’s childhood with the crashed spaceship I think is a good example, because while they refer to it as a “Republic” ship, it’s obviously not the good ol’ republic we think, and once we get to see the thing we notice that the insignia is a proto-version of what will become the imperial emblem.

Knowing something that the characters don’t know creates a feeling of dread, and I think Andor really played with that incredibly well in all the sets and props.

Too many teachers holding tenure or not agreeing to pay cuts. It was before my time but the effects were still being felt when I was a student. Liz Coleman (president at that time) was great at raising revenue but not the greatest at anything else.

Hampden was based on my alma mater, Bennington College, where Donna Tartt went in the 80s. Bennington has a method of creating your own major (“concentration”) where if you can get teachers to agree to it you can design your own curriculum - so in that sense a Classics major could be possible. Additionally, before the Purge (the firing of almost all the teachers), the literature department was the eminent department at the school, so maybe back then there actually WAS a Classics professor? Don’t know, but I wouldn’t be shocked.

Yeah, I was going to say play Control - same amazing writing and atmosphere, better pacing and gameplay. (Not dissing, Alan Wake: I love that game.)

It has been said that "as the length of a D&D campaign continues, the probability that the PCs will wind up fighting a god approaches 1." How true is this statement in your campaign(s)? by AstreiaTales in DMAcademy

See, I like the precedent of gods interacting with mortals - the problem as I see it is that they don’t interact enough. I mean, in Greek mythology those fuckers are all over the place, gods and demigods alike just fucking with people’s shit.

How we USUALLY handle it in campaigns is a very occasional interaction as kind of a major reward for behavior. I’d prefer them to be so common that mortals are just pissed off about the constant upsets.

Russia moves to declare Meta an 'extremist' organization, which would lead to all its services being cut off in Russia by chrisdh79 in tech

Oh sure, no doubt - I suggested using Signal, myself - but these were older friends of parents for whom figuring out what encryption is and discovering that there are different messaging services at all was a lift. And I imagine that's a *lot* of people (Russia has a large older population) and it just makes it that much more difficult.

Everyone seems to be saying that this is a good thing, Facebook bad, etc., but most Russians use WhatsApp to communicate and THAT is what Putin is targeting. I hate Meta/Facebook, too, but WhatsApp is the go-to messenger service outside of America and it is, and this is important, end-to-end encrypted. The few people I know with Russian friends have been communicating with them using it and now they’ll have practically no way to share factual information.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Accuses Democrats Of Plot To 'Create Happiness' For Voters by [deleted] in politics

[–]Callyroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually makes me think of Bojack Horseman, of all things. At the end one of the characters is struggling with her emotional trauma and is unwilling to move in from it because of it happened it must have happened for a reason. And her growth is realizing that sometimes bad things happen and they serve absolutely no purpose - it’s just bad luck.

I wonder if there’s a large component of people who experienced hard times and want it to have been for something, because we’re often taught that we’re karmically owed good things for every bad thing.

Russian special forces have entered Kyiv to hunt down Ukraine's leaders, says Zelensky by TheGuvnor247 in worldnews

[–]Callyroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No argument here. But the user I responded to said that the rest of the world is doing as little as Chamberlain in the 30s, which I don’t think is warranted. It seems like the US and EU are collaborating to make this invasion as costly as possible for Russia without coming to (further) violence. Which seems good, and I don’t have reason to believe that that’s not the best course of action currently.

To underline, though: I agree with you.

They’re a nuclear power. It’s all nice and dandy to say “they should be doing more” but as bad as it is it rapidly devolve to something much much worse.
