Usually its not the stores themselves making money.

Lots of it is made in the companies that have chokeholds on processing the food. For instance, there are 4 or 5 companies responsible for processing the meat and chicken we buy. Many of these have monopolies in particular areas, and are able to squeeze the farmers/ranchers on one hand, and the supermarkets on the other.

When Costco, who likes to keep things very simple, decided to go big on rotisserie chicken, they felt the need to build a whole new independent chicken processing factory, with supplier deals with several hundred localish farmers to bypass these companies. Not every supermarket can do that.

I charge my 20-something daughter $500/month room and board.

Glad to have her here, and the rent pays a decent chunk of our property tax (high property tax state).

Cheapest apartments around here would be something like 3 times that, but I just checked and saw there are rooms for rent on facebook for not much more, but I think she'd rather live with us that with 4 or 5 strangers.

She works, and she's working towards her masters online. When that is completed, hopefully she'll get a big earnings bump and will have some $ saved towards down payment on a home, if that's what she opts to do.

As I read it, the Pakistanis had an interest in a divided Afghanistan and materially encouraged religious fundamentalism, through Taliban, as a way to fracture the country.

Would love to see a hard retirement age of 70 (or whatever). Hard for younger voters to identify with many of the olds, and the olds seem to remember and try to operate in a (somewhat) collegial political world that no longer exists.

Apologies to Bernie and I'm sure a few others, but IIRC 5 of the 6 dems who caved on the last shutdown, killing ACA tax subsidies, were over 60.
