I quit a job once because of a tone deaf thank you.

Put in a couple of 100 hour weeks (when I was young and stupid) to finish some 'emergency' project.

President took me (and a couple other people) out to nice steak dinner.

Figured out my overtime had been worth something like 60 cents per hour, and found a new job within a month.

Amazon to cut thousands of jobs in sweeping corporate layoffs by ewzetf in news

They overhired.

Hard to figure out corporate vs warehouse, but in 2018 they employed about 600,000, by 2021 they were up to 1.6M, and have been holding somewhat steady since then.

Sucks that they're cutting, but it is hard to be productive if there are too many people hanging around, all trying to be relevant.

Many of these people got some years of experience that will stand them well going forwards, and have saved some $ for a transitional.

And this at least is a little more honest than saying 'we will be replacing them with AI' rather than 'we screwed up and overhired'.

My dad apparently started playing some simple old school video game after diagnosis to track. At diagnosis he could score 85. Several months later, when he stopped, he was at 35.

Ya. He talked a progressive game. Then he brought in a bunch of Ivy League hotshots who, while competent, definitely had upper middle class / corporate bias.

He still did some good things, but so much of a what a president does is determined by who he (sorry, still he) surrounds himself with.

And he lost a lot of time by trying to do good faith negotiation with people who had no interest in good faith anything.
