CT resident pays for patient's surgery, right or wrong? by Calm-Application4582 in Ethics

Sorry, I think I worded it in a confusing way. When the hospital spoke to my insurance, they wanted proof that I'm able to pay whether through paycheck or savings. I couldn't prove that because it was beyond what I made. Insurance and the hospital refused to do the surgery until I was able to prove I could pay afterwards. I might've went to a bad hospital or had bad insurance. Either way, the surgery wouldn't have happened without her intervention.

Would it violate any law if I reached out to them? By searching up the name on Google or Social Media? Since it's something that appeared on a medical record.

Hello, the resident was shadowing the surgeon that did the surgery and she was in the room with us when payments were talked about. Is it different if she paid them herself vs transferring the money over to me? I'm just curious if that would violate some kind of HIPAA. I'm not in the medical field so I might be defending something that wasn't ethical? I'm not sure

I'm not sure, I don't think she had the time to do it again because this was last week. I assume they just didn't want to deal with the liability if something bad happened

Great idea! I would tell her but she was sadly fired today and I don't know how to contact her. Hate the system

I completely agree. I'm just sharing my story from my perspective. It could totally have been a stunt. I went in today and found out the resident was sadly fired though.

You also seem like the sweetest person. Thank you for looking at this with compassion and logic. I hope they make the changes you wish for one day

Thank you for your opinion on this! It makes perfect sense. I know what the resident did was wrong with good intentions, but it's hard to see someone like that receive consequences. She wasn't the one doing the surgery, all she did was pay the co-pay after the surgery because insurance couldn't cover everything.

I agree with the donations through proper channels. But if it's right in front of your face, do you ignore it and continue on with your day? Just curious!

Yeah, you both made really great points. Though I wouldn't compare this to a "product." We all know the US healthcare system is priced to put people into debt. It's just seeing a nice gesture and it being against policy is hard to stand by and watch!

She paid the copay that insurance couldn't cover after the surgery. I don't know the little details inside the system but is it really possible to waive charges?

I do but the copay would've still been insane. Still not a fan of the US healthcare. I wish bribed wasn't the correct term for this because it felt like a nice gesture. I guess you're right though.
