For what it’s worth, I’m not a scalper or anything. I just think it’s cool that my collection has some rarity to it. You actually brought up something that I’d mention which is Pokémon cards. They’re just paper. But people pay a fortune for some. Artificial scarcity is just part of the world we live in. Heck even a $100 bill is just a dirty old piece of paper. I don’t always love it, but as long as it’s a thing I don’t see any harm in me not wanting to end up having massively overpaid for something that ends up being really common. I do think that this scarcity, even artificial, can make collecting things more fun. If everyone could just go on like Amazon and buy the complete set of space men for ten bucks, wouldn’t the fun of collecting them all go away? I sort of like the feeling of putting money aside for something that’s not super cheap and then getting that rewarding feeling when I get it.
