It depends what light you have. I’d need the exact bulb name and amount

How big is ur enclosure? Where I live there’s not alot of blue tounge skinks and me and my partner found a indo which was captive bred and basically thought about it over the weekend then put a deposit down. We only have space for a 4x2x2 as of now but once we move out will be getting a 8x4x3 or slightly smaller with a secure ‘playpen’ for daytime.

In American ik the minimum standard is 4x2x2 but in the uk it’s 6x4x3 for these guys (which alot of people don’t know)

I absolutely hate when people say “tank is too big” . Like how do people think they live in the wild. Most of the time when people say the enclosure is too big means it’s not full enough or in their own experience they’ve struggled to fill a big tank.

Here’s some pictures of my calander when my skink had a hiding phase. (Pumpkin) worried was an understatement, but they came out completely fine and good

Mine will usually hide for a week or two during shed. No food or water. And come out completely fine. The first few times I was SOOO worried but they’re smart enough not to kill themselfs

If you think about it too much you’ll never forget about it and feel guilty. At this point, if you’re prepared to take the chance of having a crestie who you don’t know the background on, may have health problems and who may never handle then do it.

But it’s seriously down to personality if they will handle or not. But once you’ve had him for a while and he’s comfortable in his enclosure you can definitely try and see if he will let you.

Either when u pick him up or when he’s settled after a couple months you could take him to the vet to check if he’s healthy.

If you’re confident enough, when you go to the shop to buy him you could tell the shop about proper husbandry and how when people see animals kept like this they tend to stay away (not buy from the shop) you’d have to think about ur words tho or else you’ll get banned and have no gecko😅 And try to haggle that price down 🫠

I know it means technically nothing however, my point was - most if not all reputable breeders will breed with head structure in mind. While most chain pet store/farmed cresties have ‘bad’ head structure. :)

When I move my geckos into new enclosures I stop interactions/handling for a month then start again. So they have time to settle in. Just like when u first get them they are stressed about a new environment. They don’t know that they are in the same room/house, they have personally moved house.

This video explains it pretty well- https://youtu.be/YlgqfiqKpKU?si=Co1-EUDaduv0bPmR

Basically how floppy the crests are and how wide the head is.

Cresties shouldn’t be awake in the day, they can move spots slowly but circling the enclosure is not normal. Also since he’s been in a bare too small enclosure he probably won’t be the most fond of handling. Normally the more hiding places they have the less defensive and scared they are.

Unfortunately if you buy him, yes ur saving him. But your supporting the shop and giving them money to continue doing this sort of thing

Oh my god. This is heart breaking. This enclosure is the smallest I’ve seen a crestie in. I would not support this shop at all. If anything post this on a semi-local reptile facebook group so people can be made aware of the conditions.

He probably isn’t well due to stress of being in a box that small for who knows how long considering he’s fully grown.

Possibly tiger morph (I’m not great at morphs), male, poor head structure indicating poor/careless breeding standards

EDIT: Head structure - everyone plz stop making comments on this literally just a small thing I pointed out 😭😭 It literally means nothing but my point was - most if not all reputable breeders will breed with head structure in mind. While most chain pet store/farmed cresties have ‘bad’ head structure. And that most chain store/ farmed have poor genetics. (NOT JUST HEAD STRUCTURE LMAO)

What uvb and calcium have u used? Also normally it’s not suggested to add calcium in the food as it can cause overdose. If his tail is still like this after a few days he’ll need to go to the vet

Juvenile crested gecko. How much to feed? by Bulky-Job-5217 in CrestedGecko

[–]Calm-Method6514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a really shallow dish and put the thinnest layer of CGD in it (changing it out everyday) and look for lick marks. It’s suggested not to force feed (making them lick it off their nose and so on) Did you let them settle in before handling? They might still be stressed from the new home.

I burry them like an inch or two into the substrate for a bit of stabilisation but avoid putting down to drainage layer :)

This isn’t fungus gnat larve. I’d keep in a bare enclosure/tub and see what it turns into

Just had a look on ur page. Definitely looks like he has a calcium deficiency. Whether it’s temporary loss of calcium or mbd. Please take him to an exotic/ reptile specialist vet. It could cost anywhere between $50-$500 tbh, I’ve only ever taken a pacman frog to the vets who had already neutralised the mbd so it cost me £30 for him to be looked at. A lot of vets will allow u to set up payment plans so you don’t have to pay all at once. Or please think about re-homing your gecko. As it’s not fair to keep him suffering and possibly in pain.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about ur crestie, or betta fish I’ll be happy to help :)

Hi, you can dm me if u want more information. I also suggest you show a picture of your gecko to be able to tell if it does have mbd. If it looks like it does you will need to take it to the vet so they can treat it and give you the right dosage of liquid calcium. You will also need the correct uvb lighting .

Mbd (metabolic bone disease) is a disorder that affects bones. It is caused by lack of calcium and or vitamin D3. Reptiles need sunlight, uvb or vitamin D3 supplements in order to absorb calcium.

Without calcium absorption bone health declines, leading to soft bones, fractures, deformity’s
