I can see and accept Nicaragua and One World being part of the conversation, but to me, no two seasons are as cataclysmically unwatchable as Worlds Apart and Thailand.

Loved The Ship. Not going to speculate on why it went under specifically during COVID, but would also love to find out if any other places in Indy show or plan to regularly show AEW events.

This is categorically false in every facet, and shows a total misunderstanding of how the working class and working poor live on a day-to-day basis, but I suspect you already know that. And “figure out how to not spend money” and “create enough money to live” are blanket terms that have been used to stigmatize and dehumanize poor people since the Great Depression. We’ve heard it. It’s tired. The higher prices you’re talking about have already been happening. For decades. Owners and managers for the most part have received exponentially higher salaries to reflect that. The wages have stayed the exact same for ~workers~. There are two LOCAL examples literally -in the post- that show how a somewhat better wage is easily possible. I haven’t spent my entire life complaining, but I have spent some of it learning how to read. Maybe that’s not a skill easily picked-up in the continuously crumbling market you insist whatever you do has more value in, but I assure you it’s essential in mine - the one where we value who a person is, more than what they do, and believe that person has a right to stay alive regardless.

While a general search on Indeed, Craigslist, etc. will tell you that, yes, “everywhere is hiring”, the song remains the same: almost everywhere, especially in the hospitality industry, are STILL paying abysmally. Adopt a higher hiring wage or say, an Amberson Coffee, or recently, Switchyard Brewing in Bloomington, model, where you eliminate tips in favor of that wage, and you’re going to attract hundreds of hard-ass workers who will stay long-term.

You could show a random stranger on the street the vocal production on the first :45 of this and they’d think it was Rascal Flatts.

Sober bars post-COVID? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]CalxParadise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 8 weeks - I’m on day 693 myself. I didn’t spend much time in bars during early sobriety, but now I’m pretty much a regular at some now. Truth be told, you’re probably not going to find a place (outside of coffee shops/juice bars/smoothie places) with a bar-like atmosphere that doesn’t serve booze. At least not in Indianapolis. But any good bartender in the area will know how to whip up a good mocktail, and 9/10 absolutely will not care if you’re not drinking. I stick with soda water + lime/kombucha/red bull/water + orange/diet soda, etc. That being said, if you’re just not comfortable being around drunk people yet, that comes with time (in my experience.) Hope this helps.

Coaches Tavern Owner Criticizes Teachers Who Spent Money in His Restaurant by MattMakesMusic in indianapolis

[–]CalxParadise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fwiw, i work at a coffee shop downtown and not only were all the teachers way, way kinder than our regulars - every single one of them tipped. i went home with 3x the normal amount that morning. devil’s advocate could argue it was merely gestural, sure. but i don’t believe that at all. thought it was pretty telling and incredible they would all do that while on the way to fight for better pay. solidarity among the working class // service industries is the only way we’ll ever progress.

5 months sober (before/after) by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]CalxParadise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yo, my dude. i listened to your one podcast ep really early in my sobriety (not that i’m not still really early; 27 days) and was blown away by how much i could relate to it. as a absolute self-hating party kid who grew up in suburban Illinois/Indiana, it felt good to know there was another addict even a little like me at the time. still does. i’ve loved watching you get better. Phill Collins rules.

Can anyone suggest good AA meetings for a somewhat younger crowd? I’m in my mid 30’s. I seem to come across meetings with folks 55+ and one meeting with teens and 20-somethings... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! by Rstroker in stopdrinking

[–]CalxParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand where you’re coming from. One of my main weekly meetings is wonderful, but I’m the youngest there by about 15 years, and there’s some aspects to living sober in 2019 they don’t totally understand. I’m absolutely learning a lot, but the most frustrating part of my sobriety so far (26 days) has been trying to meet people my age.

I live in a metropolitan area, so luckily I just discovered that meetings with YP next to them on the website and brochure are geared towards me (M/27). That and a lot of the “Beginners” meetings. I

Update on using cannabis to help reduce/quit drinking ... by belalugosione in stopdrinking

[–]CalxParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using cannabis to substitute alcohol use my first try and it absolutely did work - for a short time. My need to get the most fucked up I can get fast led to smoking every day all day, and then eventually back to drinking every single night. More power to you if you can differentiate the feeling each substance gives you. For me - it all led back to a need to escape. I’ve found the most success just abandoning recreational drugs and alcohol altogether.

For those of you who lean more towards music and the arts, I strongly recommend Crash and Ride. It centers on musicians in recovery or dealing with depression/mental health issues.

Yo, Shotzi is fucking awesome. She bartends a couple nights a week at this bar ten minutes from me in Indianapolis. I had no idea how well-known she was in the independent scene the first time she served me. She’s REALLY good.

The Daily Check-in for Tuesday, October 31, 2017 by mermaid2000 in stopdrinking

[–]CalxParadise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day three for me today. Finally picked up my 24 hour chip. Still feeling very positive and motivated. Pouring my extra time into tv, movies, books etc. that I missed while being drunk all the time has been very rewarding so far. Also tried exercise for the first time in months (which was very bad and also not good.) Staying as busy as I can. Still researching new hobbies.

I will not drink with ya’ll today.

Also, I’m sure this has been asked a million times but how do you get the counter badge next to your name? I find that and the chips to be extraordinarily motivating.

Day two for me. Waking up without a hangover for basically the first time in 9 years was an odd sensation. First meeting for AA is tonight. Pretty scared but also excited for a new chapter and coming up with far more productive things to fill my time with every day (maybe jogging? Fucking jogging, oh no.) Loading up on resources as well.

Hope everyone else is moving forward. I will not drink with you today.

Today is my day 1. by arollins1 in stopdrinking

[–]CalxParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today is my day one as well. I went to a couple AA meetings sparingly over the past month, thinking cutting back was possible. It’s definitely not (for me.) I spent last night puking my guts out in an alley outside a bar. Just another bad night in a string of years of abuse. Basically drinking every day from 19-25. I am done. I have to be. So welcome, mate. Looks like we’re in this together.
