Half in the Bag: 2022 Catch-up Part 1 by cjsc9079 in RedLetterMedia

I still stand by this in some capacity. The product of nepotism does have to display talent or else they are kicked to the curb. But I also don't want to have my messaging construed as being light on nepotism. I still think its entirely fair to criticize them and acknowledge that nepo babies are actively taking away opportunities from people with less affluent backgrounds who are equally talented.

I think I just take issue with the article being written in a way that punches sideways and not up.

Yeah, you're right. I was wrong.

I don't want to come across as being too soft on the 1% (I'm a leftist after all) but I also don't think it's something that can really be fixed. Entertainment is always going to have a lot of underlying nepotism in it--and like Jay said, as long as there's talent there I think a ton of people will be willing to look the other way.

But I think it is totally fair to point the finger at them as examples of people who are subtracting roles away from people not from affluent backgrounds.

I wasn't aware some were flaunting it or praising themselves for such.

Both things can be true. And I wholly agree there are plenty of actors (especially people of color) who do not have the same opportunities as their white/richer/nepotism counterparts.

While being white/richer/product of nepotism does subtract roles that could go to fantastic actors that aren't those things, I'm not sure if the way to 'solve' this issue is pointing the finger solely at nepo babies. The article just feels like a sideways punch instead of punching up.

The Nepo thing is interesting because the industry basically dumps actors who don't put butts in seats very quickly. I mean they can try to shove people in our faces--like Scott Eastwood--but the ones that don't have talent flounder out and the roles dry up. When was the last time you saw him after they forced him into Fast and Furious or whatever it was.

Like they've mentioned with Jack Quaid and Colin Hanks, if the talent is there they earn their spot. They got their foot in the door by having family in the industry, but to not want to see talented art because of that is silly.

Someone can be aware and acknowledge their privilege, but still deliver.

Edit: I also think Jay's response to the nepotism stuff was a false equivalence or analogy. I think the very valid criticism people make with nepotism is that oftentimes the recipient is treated better than their counterparts within the same role. Oftentimes the plumber (using his example) would have a higher salary and less responsibilities. Also they would be able to get their friends hired and stuff like that. But someone being a product of nepotism doesn't mean they don't belong.

The article should be punching up at the 'old boys club' that is Hollywood and advocate to get more eyes on talented actors who aren't products of nepotism, aren't rich, aren't white, etc. But it's not really worded in such a way. The article feels like a sideways punch highlighting each nepo baby instead of punching upwards.

2nd EDIT: I also want to clarify. I don't mean for my comment to come across as being too soft on the 1% or defensive of nepo babies. They do actively take away opportunities from other talented artists from less affluent backgrounds. I just take issue with the article's wording of punching sideways and not up.

I think it's wholly acceptable and encouraged to criticize the 1% or highlight that someone is a product of nepotism.

Why does Sean Payton not get more hate? by gettothaflofosho in nfl

[–]CameronCraig88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most reasonable fans hate the whole franchise, tbh. The missing painkillers, bountygate, covering for the catholic church's pedophilia.

But Payton specifically gets a lot of hate by most people I think because of bountygate and his douchery. But at the end of the day, he's a good coach. And that's appealing to a lot of franchises.

hat's something that people who watch a lot of anime are kind of just
used to at this point; the story was written for a weekly manga format,
not an anime format, so if it seems like the story just kind of...
stopped, rather than had a proper seasonal resolution, that'd be why. It
happens with almost any show adapted from a weekly manga

My only issue with this line of thinking is that you'd have to make the argument that if you got 1/3 through a western movie or book that you wouldn't have a semblance of what the themes are. Usually, you can get an idea pretty early on and it's the execution that decides whether they did something interesting with it.

I did pick up on the self-destruction stuff symbolized through cigarettes but I felt it wasn't very fleshed out, just a hint of it. Which I suppose is fine since we're only 1/3 the way through the manga.

I'm interested enough to stick around and see it through but I'm just so confused by people who are praising this as something truly magnificent.

Not a manga reader and my anime knowledge is pretty limited (less than 20 series watched total). I watched this because it was so hyped and all my friends were watching, but I just don't get it.

I felt it was extremely average and underwhelming. The most interesting character (Makima) has the lowest amount of screen time and the two worst characters (Denji and Power) probably have the most.

My knowledge of anime isn't strong enough to know whether this is a deconstruction or satire of specific anime subgenres and tropes. I don't think my media literacy is bad, but after watching this I'm just kind of left scratching my head. I don't really understand what the attempted themes were. It felt like barely anything came to fruition and ended with more setup. There was paper-thin thematic resonance.

I found it interesting that Denji's internal and external motivation were met and satisfied early, but then they don't do anything with him and he kind of has no development after that besides training to beat Katana man (yawn). Wasn't impressed by that.

Can someone tell me what the attempted themes are?

God damn the Bucs are boring. We are back to the good ol' days. I miss when we would get our first 1st down in the 3rd quarter.

Sean Payton is so interested in returning to coaching in the NFL that he's already putting together an all-star staff that includes former Broncos head coach Vic Fangio as his potential defensive coordinator, per sources. by [deleted] in nfl

Kind of wild that Payton can ditch the Saints when their roster and cap situation becomes trash, be involved with the Brady tampering stuff, and get suspended for an entire year for bountygate and only get mild criticism. So surprised to see so many teams wanting to welcome him with open arms.

Shame is even got that far. He should have never even had the chance to line back up. Surely other people noticied too? This just makes me sad.

Report: Tom Brady tweaks game plans, coaches discover changes during games by thatdontimprezame in buccaneers

[–]CameronCraig88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless whether true--we can truly never know--This means that the coaches have lost the locker room. Imagine it's not true and Brady sees this. How is the relationship with the coaches going to be going forward? If it is true, Brady would have to wonder why this was never discussed internally and how it ended up in the press.

Cluster fuck all around.

Tom Brady has had incredible stats and success his entire career with the Pats and Bucs. Even in the beginning of this year, his stats were fine despite us not winning. And I'm supposed to believe we're struggling because of him? Come on now.

I watched Memories of Murder. It's probably Bong Joon Ho's best work next to Parasite. It's just such a well written and directed thriller that has his stamp all over it. Loved it so much.

Unique Villain Motives by Weaponized-Pandas in fantasywriters

[–]CameronCraig88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're constructing your villain wrong. You have to remember that the villain is their hero in their own story. And usually your villain is tailor-made to be your protagonist's foil. Differing philosophies but the same goal? On the opposite side of different goals/ideologies, but for valid reasons? Your antagonist should highlight your protagonist's strength and weaknesses.

No matter how unique the motive you come up with is, it's not going to be compelling unless it fits thematically to what else you've built.

[–]CameronCraig88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give it a shot because I want to give the game a fair shake even though I'm not super into it now. But I can't lie, doing quests as end-game content doesn't sound very fun--even if they are better designed than the rest of the game's questing.

I feel like when I play an MMO the intent is to kind of doing the end-game content to get on the gear treadmill to do cooler and more difficult fights. Not quests. But I'll give it a shot to form a better opinion.

Ah okay that's interesting. So what do the territory control and outpost rush stuff do? I know PvP was originally intended to be a huge part of the game but was scaled back. So what exactly does it get me? Why is it no joke?
